Diner Reviews
  • "Il Tinello was lovely. Probably the most attentive and excellent service one could find in very uppity mid-town Manhatten. The dinner prices were reasonable (for NYC) with many additions to select from. Our waiter ,Daniel, was omnipresent but not intrusive and the table side made Caesar salad was special. We had chicken dishes and a veal entree. All were excellent and generous. Because the wines are pricey, we drank less than we normally would. Other than that, it was a great dinner. Regis is right!"

  • "Excellent food and exceptional service. Very disappointed with the wine list given the food. Very few mid priced wines ($50-100) and they have a selection of ONE wine by the glass. For a restaurant with such good food, this was very disappointing."

  • "Two words describe Il Tinello; Elegant and awesome."

  • "Wonderful service. The Caesar salad is made at the table and is delicious. Also, the berries with zabalone is outstanding."

  • "Ambiance, service, menu and food, all top notch. Even a comfy little bar that makes a great manhattan. Caesar salad prepared table side was a nice touch. Highly recommend."

  • "We had enjoyed dining at Il Tinello for many years. Our welcome was as warm as usual, we were seated immediately, and then the changes began. My kir royale arrived with too much cassis and without the customary lemon twist. When I ordered the special lobster and pasta, the captain said it was a good choice. He did not suggest that we add any vegetables and...we forgot. The captain made our caesar salad...and then disappeared for the rest of the evening. When our main course arrived we were horrified. The plates were a mess, foil had been left in a twisted clump on my husband's chicken. The portions were grossly large and unattractively plated. Needless to say, with all the dining choices in the city we will not return any time soon."

  • "Il Tinello is not for the faint of wallet. Dinner for 6 was $1000, including tip!! Food was supberb and the service was impeccable with numerous eastern and central European staff pretending to be Italian, never the lass very competent and friendly. Drinks around to start. We all had the antipasta - done up for the table, nice but nothing special. Wine by the glass. The entrees were all wonderful - Bronzino, shrimp pasta, Dover sole. All had dessert - all were good. So when the check came we were shocked. Probably won't return because the value is not there for me."

  • "This small gem just off 5th Ave, is a very special restaurant for us in NYC. From the time Don, the manager greets us as old friend s, till Daniel prepares the Zabioni , so perfectly, dinner here is perfect."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary at Il Tinello. The staff and service was impeccable. They use a number of imported key ingredients that set them apart from the ordinary Italian bistro. Try the heirloom tomatoes with Berata cheese. Wine list is very good with well know Italian labels as well as California. Had the veal and the sea bass. Both were delicious. The deserts are all great. The staff will make a sampler plate of all the deserts if you ask but you have never had Tiramisu like this. We will definitely return to this one when we visit Manhattan again."

  • "We have been to Il Tinello many times and have loved it each time because it was good food in a lovely setting and we could have a conversation as we ate. This particular night, however, was so noisy and crowded that we could not hear each other, service was clumsy, with wrong things served, and long spaces between courses, I would hesitate to go back."

  • "We made a reservation late in the afternoon for that evening with some concern about the several more negative reviews. But, restaurant was close to our hotel and we were hungry.....we arrived and were immediately seated and served. The waitstaff was attentive but not intrusive. The food was very good. Although pricy, we would certainly go when again in New York. Restaurant did become noticeably noisier as the evening progressed."

  • "My husband and I were looking for an Italian restaurant close to our Hotel and we stumbled upon Il Tinello on Open Table. I visit Manhattan on a regular basis and have to say our dinner was one of the best. The food and service was simply amazing."

  • "An enjoyable, relaxed meal before a show at Lincoln Center. Veal ravioli special was wonderful, as was the sea bass deboned at the table and served an a piping hot plate, Fantastic service. A bit expensive even by Manhattan standards, but perfect for a special occasion."

  • "At a recent dinner, my wife ordered the special pasta. The dried out pappardelle with veal sauce and a spoon of ricotta cheese on top wasn't worth more than the $25 of the average priced pasta on the menu and certainly not the $35 charged. The meal we had at an Italian eatery on the upper Westside was tastier and at a more appropriate (lower) price. As an aside, don't offer an after dinner liquor with biscotti to the table next to me without doing the same to me"

  • "While the food at Il Tinello is excellent, it is the service that is truly exceptional. The waiter patiently explained and answered questions about the many specials. When we ordered one antipasto and one pasta dish with the intention of sharing, both were served as half portions on two plates without us having ask. As other reviewers have mentioned, the dessert cart is spectacular and almost impossible to resist. The tables at Il Tinello are also a bit farther apart than you will find in some NYC restaurants, providing a more private and intimate experience."

  • "We have complicated issues with dining and are so often reminded of it through the staff. Il Tinello's most gracious and accommodating employees had me forgetting that I was out at a restaurant and transported me, mentally, to a dear friend's home. In short, it was perfect in every way. Food, service, ambiance, all a delight and we simply cannot wait to go back!"

  • "We arrived on time according to our reservation (9:00 pm) but the restaurant had overbooked and was late so most of the people with 9pm reservations had to wait at least 40 mins to be seated. The host was incredibly rude and even said that they didn't care about customer reviews because they already had loyal customers. We were seated at 10 pm and the food was not even worth the wait. I would definitely NOT recommend this restaurant to anybody, specially if they don't care about customer reviews and new customers."

  • "Comfortable, quiet atmosphere - very much your "neighborhood restaurant." Clean and well-appointed. The sevice was excellent. Our waiter was spot on in his recommendations and attentive. The food was wonderful - excellent mix of comfort food and new offerings. Lots of specials to choose from. The wine list is awesome and we enjoyed every drop! Would recommend it to friends, family and colleagues!"

  • "Everything about our evening at il tinello was superior! The food, the service and the ambience made for a perfect valentines day celebration! This will be a restaurant that we visit again in the future!"

  • "Food was excellent, menu extensive. Despite a solemn pledge to my wife that I would forgo dessert (for caloric reasons), I caved as soon as they wheeled the cart table side. The distinguishing characteristic of this restaurant was the warmth and attention of the staff. They were engaging and conversational. It was Valentine's Day and they gave my wife a lovely red rose at the conclusion of the meal, very sweet! The appearance and ambience of the restaurant was first rate. I called the manager to my table to thank him for such attention to detail."

  • "We loved Il Tinello. The food options were interesting, preparation was excellent and taste was outstanding. Service was world-class. The restaurant decor/atmosphere was a little "older", but that didn't, at all, detract from a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Outstanding menu and food, and exceptional service! I love it when you walk into an Italian restaurant and they greet you with Buona Sera. There is an extensive menu, with a selection of approximately 15 pastas, as well as a proportional number of apps, seafood, and meats. They have a nice selection of very good Italian reds. Prices are quite reasonable for Manhattan. Waitstaff is very attentive. My only reservation is there was not a full restaurant on Fri eve, and there were almost too many staff ! Giorgio (waiter) was excellent. Would definitely go back."

  • "We dine here almost every time we come to NY. The service is first rate and in a city busy with Italian options, we have found consistent excellence at IL Tinello. Real Caesar dressing is fantastic. Stay for desert as well."

  • "My husband and I love This restaurant. Every time we visit New York, we dine here. We love the appetizer. The server brought a cart with fresh vegetable, cooked shrimp, Prosciutto to our table. We asked the server to make a mixture for us. The appetizer was always delicious. The fish dishes are excellent too. We ordered the whole baked fish. The server brought the cooked fish to us and took away the bones. The fish is tender and fresh. We love it and we will definitely dine in Il Tenello again."

  • "One of the last of the old fashioned, old line NY Italian spots near 56th & 5 Ave... Very dated old fashioned but elegant interior and well trained traditional hi level service staff who unfortunately are not always attentive! The food is delicious, authentic and well prepared and presented."

  • "If you're looking for the very best, classic style, Italian restaurant. Before NYC was overrun with expanded pizzeria's masquerading as Fine Dining, every neighborhood (I'm talking 1960's) had a place like this. A place where Caesar salads are made tableside with raw eggs and pasta from a box was as bad as sauce from a jar. If your palate knows the difference between good and great ingredients, then it's worth the steep price. If your regular go to Italian is a chain or pizzeria, save the money and go to one of the many good restaurants at half the price."
