A word from Il Terrazzo Carmine
Il Terrazzo Carmine, owned and operated by Carmine Smeraldo, is one of Seattle's true dining anomalies - a highly successful restaurant with unfailingly high standards and a loyal, sophisticated clientele. The cuisine has been acclaimed as Seattle's best by the media and more importantly, by local diners.
Il Terrazzo Carmine is located in historic Pioneer Square - nestled in an urban-renewed alley with entrances through the vintage lobby on First Avenue or through the delightful courtyard in the back. Since 1984, Carmine Smeraldo's classic Italian restaurant has been where the locals have chosen to return over and over again. From the Carpaccio Di Bue and Spaghettini Dell 'Ortolano for lunch to the Suprema Di Pollo Farcita and Zuppa Di Pesce for dinner you will know you have gone to a place where excellence is a way of life. Arguably the best Italian restaurant in Seattle, Il Terrazzo serves classical Italian cuisine with an atmosphere you may want to call home and never leave

  • "Still the best Italian restaurant in the city. Free parking in the back makes it very convenient."

  • "The food was fine, I didn't think the menue was that impressive. There wasn't any thing on the menue that I really wanted to try."

  • "I love this place! My husband and I found this place while in the area trying to find a restaurant three years ago and keep coming back. By far this is my favorite restaurant. Our most recent experience I was really looking forward to their truffle butter steak with a wild mushroom risotto. Unfortunately they weren't offering it as apart if their specials that night. When our awesome server Burton came by, I asked if it was still available and he said, "let me ask the kitchen if they have the truffle butter." At that point I was blown away. Our last two visit, our server was not so accommodating (but still a great time none the less). Burton was able to pull off the delicious entree for me to enjoy, and enjoy I did. Thank you Burton."

  • "I had the lobster ravioli, which was some of the best ravioli I have ever tasted. The Caesar salad was acceptable, but none equal what my boyfriend makes. My only complaint was the dessert, which was nothing special."

  • "This was a our first visit to Il Terrazzo and the food was great. For appetizers I'd recommend the mushroom polenta, and the grilled shrimp -- both are savory and wonderfully prepared. I ordered the venison ravioli (which was delicious and not gamey), and my husband ordered the Chioppino. Our waiter Burton was outstanding! His recommendations for appetizers and entrees was spot on. Burton's attention to our table was perfect -- not intrusive but never ignored (definitely recommend him as a waiter). The wine menu was a very good mix of Washington, CA, and Italian wines (plus some French). We loved it and will most definitely be back."

  • "This proved to be one of the best dinner we had in Seattle. The menu is somewhat limited on classic southern Italian dishes, but the execution and tastes are very good."

  • "I did not even know this little gem was in Pioneer Square. I have passed by many times and even worked in the area but never knew. It is not a little restaurant. Love the setting and ambience. Food was good and our waiter Oscar was great, too. They brought a delicious piece of tiramisu for my fiancé for his birthday. It was unexpected and so good."

  • "We had a early reservation and got caught in a horrible traffic jam, we ran 1 hour late. We called and they said they would hold our table until we arrived. Great service, great food, over priced wine list."

  • "Great classic Italian restaurant. I had not been for ten years as we moved away but it is still great!"

  • "Meal was amazing from appetizer to dessert. Gnocchi melted in your mouth; oyster plump and fresh; Bolognese sauce incredible; lamb chops perfectly tender and seasoned. Our waiter was knowledgeable and gracious. All around perfect experience."

  • "What a surprise when you open the doors to this gem! Imagine walking through the lobby of a commercial building to find yourself in Tuscany! No one is speaking Italian but there is a true transport when you embark into Il Terrazzo Carmine. Rustic, beautifully appointed and delicious!"

  • "This great Italian restaurant is so charming, and so comfortable, and the food is so delicious...I'd be here once a week at least if we lived in Seattle. Four friends, four different main dishes - and everyone thinks theirs is the best - that's when you know a restaurant is a winner."

  • "We are use to relaxed atmosphere and casual but excellent dinning and this was a bit ostentatious. Had a fabulous memorable meal in Winslow last night for 2/3rds the price. Guess that downtown fine dinning isn't our thing...maybe great for someone else. It's not about the $$$$ it's about the feel and we felt like it just wasn't a place for us. Sorry:("

  • "As always, Il Terrazzo Carmine was spectacular. Out of town guest wanted sweetbreads - Carmine's are the best. The service is excellent. Fun to head to Pioneer Square and have a wonderful experience."

  • "This was my first time checking out this place and I was blown away by the great service and food. This is a nice little place tuck away in the a pioneer square, didn't have a view, but inside was very well decorated. I would totally recommend this place if you like to good Italian food, wine list and service."

  • "We've been enjoying Il Terrazzo for 22 years. It continues to be as impressive as it was the first time we dined there."

  • "We had friends from Chicago, visiting. This fine Italian restaurant immediately came to our minds, as a memorable, iconic Seattle place for dinner. The meal was leisurely, the food delicious, and surroundings very pleasant. The noise, at times, can get a little uncomfortable at a large table. But that did not take away from this enjoyable nite out with out-of-town friends!"

  • "Il Terrazzo is consistently outstanding. The perfect place if you need to be confident of a smooth, impressive dining experience whether for a romantic date or an important business meeting, to impress the in-laws or celebrate a special occasion. It's off-street entrance suggests you are in-the-know and although it is small, the outdoor dining is away from noise of the pioneer square traffic and bustle."

  • "My husband and I spent eight days in Seattle. It was our annual trip to watch the Mariners play in Safeco Field. We were looking for a nice restaurant for our final evening meal in Seattle and discovered Il Terrazzo. The food and service was excellent. Because I have a dairy as well as several other food allergies, I'm always impressed when a restaurant can accommodate my needs. Our server took my list of allergies and suggested a meal that I could eat. Il Terrazzo will definitely be included in our annual trip to Seattle."

  • "Picked this restaurant for its rating and proximity to Safeco. Very disappointed with both service and food quality. Took 20 min before anyone stopped at table to welcome. The waiter said there was mix up who was supposed to attend to our table. After salad, we waited 20 min for main course. I ordered the day's special - copper river salmon. The waiter ask how I would like it cooked. I asked for medium well. The salmon arrived uncooked inside I had to send it back. The manager came to apologize and took the charge off the bill which was the best thing of my experience."

  • "It was our 30th wedding anniversary. My husband traveled from Atlanta to celebrate since I had been on a work assignment for over a month. He researched and planned a special night a what was rated as one of Seattle's best Italian restaurant. Upon arriving on time we were seated. Expecting a special, great table since he made sure they knew when the reservation was made, it was very special. We were seated in a rear small corner of the restaurants. About a 3 x 4 space. Not romantic, not even pleasant. Tight and hot and hidden would be moe the case. Looking at our concerned faces he looked up to a balcony area and suggested we could wait for that area. Then he quickly change his mind and said, that might be ok. Service ??? Also. Why???"

  • "We love going to Il Terrazzo Carmine. Our request for a quiet table was perfectly met. The food and service are great. There are always several wonderful things on the menu that makes it hard to choose. Our anniversary was well recognized by them. We appreciated the gift of a delicious dessert to celebrate."

  • "This restaurant is gorgeous inside and has a lovely patio if you wish to dine outside. We have had dinner twice here and the food is outstanding. Everyone at the table had a different dish from fish to pasta to steak and each person commented on how good it was. The service was attentive but not overdone. We love the atmosphere and look forward to going back."

  • "This was my third time at this wonderful restaurants......whenever I'm visiting Seattle this place is a must!"

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants. During this visit my guest ordered the copper river salmon from the specials that are explained by the wait staff. She encouraged him to order it over other menu selections and specials. When I received the bill, that particular entree was $48.00. I certainly was not going to ask the prices during the special's presentation. However, when a special entree is that far out of scope of the menu pricing for lunch, I would suggest that the waiter mentions the price. I had the petrale sole which was $26 and outstanding. The lunch was great, but the $100 tab was a little bit of a shock."

  • "The restaurant is beautiful and inviting. The service was impeccable with friendly, knowledgeable wait staff. Food was delicious! We had two of the specials....Halibut and Copper River Salmon. We definitely will go back and try the Italian Food."

  • "The restaurant itself was quite lovely and the service was great. The food however was disappointing. I ordered a caprese salad. for 15.00 i got a chunk of mozzarella with 2 slices of tomato cut to 4 halfves...very small pieces of basil and no balsamic on top. felt like i had a chunk o cheese with not much else. there were 7 of us...the table was split on the food items. A couple were really good and a couple were just so so. I did love my prawn / red pepper bisque. "

  • "I returned to Il Terrazzo Carmine after a two year hiatus. I like that the restaurant still has a sense of decorum (although there was a Sounders game that evening and a few tables had fans in team regalia--less than tasteful). The food was well prepared from quality ingredients. Service was excellent. The wine list is still quite long (some wines seemed a good value and some seemed over-priced--best know your wines before venturing that list). The meal was satisfying and comfortable. The cost of the meal was on the high side for fine dining in Seattle."

  • "A true restaurant for "grown ups" - lovely decor, excellently executed menu with interesting appetizers, large and smaller portioned entrees (not just the trendy "small plates"), great desserts made in house, gracious staff and complimentary parking. Definitely our "go to" place for a reliable evening out. We're so happy that all the great things about this restaurant haven't changed since the passing of Carmine, it's beloved originator."

  • "We have dined here several times. It is our favorite Italian restaurant on the West Coast. Truly authentic Piedemontese cuisine. We have traveled to N. Italy several times & the food at Il Terrazzo is the real deal. The quality and freshness of the ingredients is amazing. This is a great restaurant for a special occasion, celebration, or business client dinner. The staff is professional, understated, confident, and charming. Not a cheap meal, but you can taste where your money is going. Highly recommended."

  • "This is an excellent restaurant for special occasions or for that special night out. Meals and Service are exceptional. Oysters, Steak and Fish all great. Sit indoors, great ambiance.. Outdoors is a bit noisy. Well worth the relatively high price. "
