A word from Il Terrazzo Carmine
Il Terrazzo Carmine, owned and operated by Carmine Smeraldo, is one of Seattle's true dining anomalies - a highly successful restaurant with unfailingly high standards and a loyal, sophisticated clientele. The cuisine has been acclaimed as Seattle's best by the media and more importantly, by local diners.
Il Terrazzo Carmine is located in historic Pioneer Square - nestled in an urban-renewed alley with entrances through the vintage lobby on First Avenue or through the delightful courtyard in the back. Since 1984, Carmine Smeraldo's classic Italian restaurant has been where the locals have chosen to return over and over again. From the Carpaccio Di Bue and Spaghettini Dell 'Ortolano for lunch to the Suprema Di Pollo Farcita and Zuppa Di Pesce for dinner you will know you have gone to a place where excellence is a way of life. Arguably the best Italian restaurant in Seattle, Il Terrazzo serves classical Italian cuisine with an atmosphere you may want to call home and never leave

  • "I took my lady friend here and the service was off the charts. The waiter was very knowledgable and our glasses stayed full the entire evening. The food was delicious and did not take long at all to be prepared. Would recommend anyone to take there sweetheart here."

  • "Closest restaurant to Italy in Seattle. My favorite lunch spot. European trained wait staff don't intrude on your conversation. Food is delicious especially the daily specials. Just walking in the door makes me happy knowing I'll have great food & service."

  • "excellent dining experience. food and service were tops. tables a little close together causing the noise level to be unacceptable. we will go again."

  • "Wonderful wine list with lots of bottles you won't find elsewhere. Terrific, unobtrusive service. The food is every bit as good as it was when Carmine was running things. RIP"

  • "I'm not a huge fan of Italian food but Il Terazzo Carmine is AMAZING. The food is fabulous , the servers are great. The service is fast, courteous and professional. I don't usually give food reviews but this place deserves good reviews."

  • "Our first waiter who was excellent had to go home; the substitute was slow and inattentive. The entrees took a long time. Three of our four meals were outstanding as were the starters. The osso bucco was tough and had not been cooked long enough."

  • "Food is expensive for what you receive. The Caesar salad was wilted and not as good as others. again expensive! service great!"

  • "Great evening at Il Terrazzo Carmine! It had been nearly 10 years since I was last there - and its a good as its ever been! Amazing menu - so many of my favorites on offer! Difficult choice - the server was very knowledgeable and very helpful, explaining sever items a couple of times! Service was spot on - not the least bit intrusive. Heading back in a few weeks for a another go!"

  • "This was a very nice place to eat, small menu but good variety. I had the special which was Risoto, had a strange taste to it, not very much flaver and was not hot enough, but the prawns in it were cooks very well....Everyone else in my party was very satisfied with their meal. Desserts were amazing!"

  • "Each meal is better than we could ask for, so we return frequently and it brings back the peaceful pace and amazing flavors we experience on our trips to Milan, Venice and Bellagio. Amazing food and service is impeccable, I would not chang a thing."

  • "Love this place and it has not lost a step with the passing of Carmine. His wife and 2 sons have done a fantastic job of stepping in to ensure the food quality and service has stayed top notch. I had the fresh (in-season now) halibut over a pea puree. I requested the risotto instead of the pasta side that it came with since I am gluten free and it was easily accommodated. Others in my party enjoyed the veal scaloppini and loved it."

  • "This was the second time lunching at Il Terrazzo Carmine. The food options are great: you're not just limited to "soup and salad." The pasta, soups and fish are all really tasty. The wait staff are professionals, not scripted robots. Will definitely return some time to experience dinner."

  • "Tucked in to a retail building, this is a surprisingly beautiful space with great food. It's a bit upscale for the typical Seattle crowd. Great menu and delicious food. Always a good choice for a special occassion."

  • "Being from New York, we had to try the Zagat food ‘29’ restaurant in the old section of Seattle… Wonderful restaurant layout – everyone cared. Solid Italian menu– you can basically see where the food is prepared and everything was remarkably clean. The food was good – but, when compared to some of the other restaurants we’ve been to – I wouldn’t call it a 29. Probably a 27. Dessert was excellent. We’ll go back but I’ve been to some restaurants where you can’t wait to go back – and this was not one for us. The bill was reasonable. They appeared very laxed about any sort of dress code. There was a guy with a ripped baseball hat in the dining room."

  • "We've gone here for years and after about a year break we had a date night here. Our food (pasta) was completely undercooked. The quality control was just off. Usually everything is perfect but this time we had a poor experience. I ordered the small plate of raviloi and my husband ordered the large. My plate had 5 raviloi and his had 6. There just wasn't anyone apparently tasting the food or looking at it before it went out. It will be some time before we go back, if at all."

  • "this restaurant does not disappoint. The chatter, the decor and the lovely aromas take you to Italy. Try the Crab bruschetta starter, the freshest, tastiest bruschetta I have eaten anywhere! My party of 6 thoroughly enjoyed their main courses, including the leg of lamb and Chilean sea bass. Pastas were prepared perfectly al dente. The service could not have been better! Our party of 6 arrived in 3 different groups, and each group was provided with their drinks promptly - no waiting for the late arrivals; the party started immediately! Mixed drinks were perfect, and the wine recommendation was "bang on"! Food arrived quickly, as well, even though the restaurant was packed. Hat's off to our lovely server and to all the staff!"

  • "My wife and I went to Il Terrazzo Carmine for this first time this weekend. We had a reservation for 5pm and were seated immediately upon arrival. We couldn't have asked for a better dining experience. The food was excellent (I had Capelli di Mare and my wife had a salmon with penne dish) and the service was great! We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "Had dinner with a group of colleagues in Seattle from Europe. The food was great, but the service left a LOT to be desired. From the Maitre 'd chastising me about having made my reservation through Open Table to the server ignoring our table, I would say it was one of the most ridiculous displays of poor service I've seen in a while...and that is saying alot from me, as I dine in Europe frequently where poor service is a constant. I would go back to the bar, or for the outdoor dining, but I will wait a LONG time before I try this again, considering that Serafina has similarly lovely ambiance and food, but with service that is soooo much better."

  • "Everything was good. That is about all I can say of the place. Everything was just good. Nothing really stood out. It was just a good Italian restaurant. I think there are many other places in Seattle I would rather go. It had a very fancy, uppity, atmosphere. I think this might appeal to a lot of people. I would rather go to a hole in the wall that has fabulous food."

  • "We went February 15th. The food was amazing, and so was the ambiance. We had a wonderful meal. Everything was perfect! It wasn't our first visit and certainly won't be our last."

  • "Upon entering, found a lively and very inviting atmosphere with professional knowledgeable wait staff. Unfortunately, the service from the kitchen did not hold up their end of the evening. My wife and I both ordered entrees along with a side of gnocchi. When our entrees arrived my filet was medium well done. It was ordered medium rare. George the General Manager quickly took it back to the kitchen. The reordered steak never did show up and the gnocchi was late to the table and was pasty and soggy. After my wife was finished with her meal and the table was cleared. George came to the table to make it right with a steak to take away. It was not an option as we were staying in a hotel with no eating utensils. I ended up not eating dinner."

  • "One of the best Italian food we've had. It was crowded but can understand going by how good the food is and it was Valentine's day. We were graciously attended and helped in selecting the dishes. The Napoleon dessert is definitely must try. Will be going back for sure"

  • "I think Carmines is consistently the best overall restaurant in Seattle. If you want some new, trendy place with an unusual menu and arrogant chef then this is not your place. If you want a traditional Italian meal that serves up the best food in town and always has something new and exciting for specials then this is it."

  • "We've been going to Il Terazzo for years and usually end up there at least once a month. The foods is fabulous, as it was this time. But this is the first time I'd say the service was so-so, to nearly unacceptable. Food very slow cominng to the table, >50 minutes from order, and the waiter seemed stressed and over-taxed. It looked to us like he was handling half the main area of the dining room, including a large table. Yet there were a lot of other wait and bus staff that weren't nearly as busy. We'll be back, but a second weak experience might make us a rethink it."

  • "A co-worker and I took a client to a "thank you" lunch yesterday. My co-worker had never been here before and was completely impressed by the food and atmosphere. He became an immediate fan. After lunch, he said he would be taking his wife to dine here as soon as they had a free night. And, he is taking another client of his here this week. As for the client and me, we have been here a number of times, and we both agreed that Il Terrazzo is always terrific and a favorite place to eat."

  • "We brought a group of 11 or so people one recent evening and just a fabulous time. The server was perhaps one of the best and for sure one of the nicest persons I have ever experienced. All of our meals arrived within minutes of each other and there were absolutely no complaints. A lovely night."

  • "I have gone here for over 25 years. While Carmine is no longer at the restaurant, his spirit lives on. It is an elegant white table cloth restaurant. The room is beautiful and cozy. The food is still one of the best in the city. I recommend very highly."

  • "I love this place! I brought several out of town business guests and all were very impressed with the menu selection, the amazing daily specials offered and the regular menu. The food was outstanding the the wait-staff very attentive."

  • "Tucked inside the lobby and hidden behind opaque doors of a Pioneer Square building, Carmine's could go easily undiscovered. I was pleasantly surprised by how light and airy the restaurant feels. At lunch hour, the place was busy with the muted voices of business lunch chatter. The meal was very good. The service with white jacket staff was quick and attentive. Only negative: Even with a reservation and a number of open tables, I was shown to a table in the front of the space, which meant waiters and new arrivals jostling around what was intended to be our quiet lunch for 2. I asked for a table at the rear of the space and near the more optimal windows looking out on a rear plaza. With a slight twitch, the request was fulfilled."

  • "We love Il Terrazzo Carmine and dine there often. Normaly the food is awsome but this time it was below our expectation. one Osso bucco was very bland, dry and unlike the previous times. The secomd dish, Pasta with seafood (forgot the name) was also dry. The service was great all night except, our party of four finished one bottle of wine and we ordered a second bottle. After 15-20 minutes of being dry and waiting we asked another server to remind our server. Two minutes later the server returned with the wine and appologized. Let me be honest, this experience is very unlike what we have had in the past. They are usually five star. Hopefuly we will have better luck next time."
