Il Ristorante Rosi on Madison Avenue is the second New York location for Cesare Casella, the iconic Italian chef with aromatic rosemary sprigs blooming from his pocket. This new location is a more upscale, white tablecloth restaurant featuring Casella’s simple, honest, classic Italian cuisine. The restaurant offers a counter for guests to take home fine Italian produce as well as a sit down dining area with a full menu for both lunch and dinner. The interior is designed by Oscar award-winning Dante Ferretti and is evokes ancient Pompeiian villas.

Cesare Casella—Tuscan chef par excellence—is the Dean of Italian Studies at the International Culinary Center. He is committed to educating the public on the tenets of Italian culinary culture, that it is defined by its history and finds expression in the humble components of fresh ingredients.

The POLPO - (octopus, corona beans, red onion, tomato), breads, (ORECCHIETTE pork sausage, broccoli rabe, pecorino Romano), and salamis we had were all really delicious. The decor was a little over the top for my tastes, but otherwise, I loved it."

  • "When we entered the restaurant we were greeted warmly, both hostesses were friendly& helpful.our drinks were ordered which were fine. Now about good. All , bland portions . Two people ordered a pasta to split as an appetizer.imagine my surprise when myself& another diner ordered the same rigatoni as entree. The portion was about 12 tubes of pasta , same size as appetizer. The waiter informed us the chef measures out pasta & it was correct. Them other entrees were bland fish-bass& tile no flavor. Ordered berries & custArd. Berries were scarce. Flour less chocolate cake tasteless. We will never go back. 12 tubes of pasta for$19? No Way!"

  • "Ambiance, food and service are top notch. I frequent that eatery and guests of mine...there for the first time...love it. It's a "find". The chairs are very comfortable but impossibly difficult to move/slide. They are heavy and swivel but getting them closer or further from the table can present a challenge particularly for the women. It is not a reason to pass up this great place."

  • "This place was recommended by Travel & Leisure magazine. My wife and I were there Saturday, June 21 , at 6pm. The place was empty and we soon realized why. The food was expensive and the main course portions were small, like appetizer size. Dessert was pretty good, but it didn't save the meal. We left the restaurant around 8 pm and it was still empty. We will not return to this restaurant, and we'll probably cancel our subscription to Travel & Leisure magazine."

  • "Unless the. Restaurant knows you, you are seated at the worst possibly located table. The charming back room was half full upon our arrival but we were seated in front of the bar . The hostess made it loud and clear that the back room tables were reserved. However I had Reserved on opentable three weeks earlier! "

  • "The service here was excellent. All the staff were friendly and seemed genuinely interested in great customer service. The food was really good. For an appetizer my friend and I shared the roasted eggplant - great. I had the ravioli and my friend had the lasagne. Both were very tasty. The only setback was the portions. As with many high end Manhattan eateries, this place gave small portions. I will return, but this is not the place to satisfy your hunger."

  • "I ordered orecchiette with rabe and sausage and the dish was overwhelmingly salty. I regret to say that I ate it anyway because my party was in a hurry and we did not have time to wait for a replacement dish. I mentioned it to the waiter and regret eating the pasta because the salty taste lasted well into the evening. The wine was great, the octopus appetizer OK, but overall the meal was not enjoyable."

  • "The food quality is very good and the presentation was beautiful, but the portion size was very small, even for NYC. Service was slow and not very attentive. Noise is about average for NYC. I was there with a client for a late lunch and the restaurant itself is beautiful and she does not eat very much so that worked out, but I would be selective about when I go back here."

We returned the salads and they added a bite or two more. The portions were ridiculously small and the salad wasn't really that tasty. The desserts and cappuccino's were delicious. Don't bother for a meal, go for dessert."

Salami special and tuna Tartar both excellent. Primi $20-25. Spaghetti carbonara and fish ravoli excellent. With appetizer, enough food. good coffee and dessert. Total with tip $200. Not cheap, but in this location, worth the price."

The pasta with mushrooms and truffles was perfectly balanced; the Veal Tonnato delicate and not smothered by a heavy sauce. The whole Branzino for two was a generous size and perfectly cooked. Six of us ate three or four courses and could find no fault with a variety of dishes. The food was matched by the quality of the service: friendly knowledgable and efficient. Sunday Moon is among the best sommeliers in the city. A gem."

The one issue we had was perhaps an over abundance of unusual uses of herbs and spices, especially with desserts like panna cotta. Generally, people enjoy basic foods without the need for herbal flavoring. Overall, the dinner was most enjoyable, and the service was first rate including the secondary personnel who performed the simple tasks of filling water glasses and providing a pristine set up between courses. These individuals were cordial, thorough, and thoroughly professional yet most pleasant."

The service was friendly, knowledgeable and plentiful. But...with all this praise, there is one caveat. The overall prices of each dish...from the appetizers to the desserts, to the wines...were far too costly. To the point where my wife and I left the restuarant with the feeling of "Was it really worth it?""

  • "Chef Casella and his staff do the usual great job we have come to expect. from the Rosi brand. The only thing I would suggest is to make the entrees just a little bit bigger. In the US, especially for lunch, people tend to order only one dish, instead of the 2-3 course meals people customarily have in Italy."
