A word from Il Ristorante Rosi
Il Ristorante Rosi on Madison Avenue is the second New York location for Cesare Casella, the iconic Italian chef with aromatic rosemary sprigs blooming from his pocket. This new location is a more upscale, white tablecloth restaurant featuring Casella’s simple, honest, classic Italian cuisine. The restaurant offers a counter for guests to take home fine Italian produce as well as a sit down dining area with a full menu for both lunch and dinner. The interior is designed by Oscar award-winning Dante Ferretti and is evokes ancient Pompeiian villas.

Cesare Casella—Tuscan chef par excellence—is the Dean of Italian Studies at the International Culinary Center. He is committed to educating the public on the tenets of Italian culinary culture, that it is defined by its history and finds expression in the humble components of fresh ingredients.

Diner Reviews
  • "lovely setting, and appetizers great, but the paella was strange, very salty and dark. Maybe overcooked."

  • "This place was recommended by Travel & Leisure magazine. My wife and I were there Saturday, June 21 , at 6pm. The place was empty and we soon realized why. The food was expensive and the main course portions were small, like appetizer size. Dessert was pretty good, but it didn't save the meal. We left the restaurant around 8 pm and it was still empty. We will not return to this restaurant, and we'll probably cancel our subscription to Travel & Leisure magazine."

  • "Unless the. Restaurant knows you, you are seated at the worst possibly located table. The charming back room was half full upon our arrival but we were seated in front of the bar . The hostess made it loud and clear that the back room tables were reserved. However I had Reserved on opentable three weeks earlier! "

  • "The service here was excellent. All the staff were friendly and seemed genuinely interested in great customer service. The food was really good. For an appetizer my friend and I shared the roasted eggplant - great. I had the ravioli and my friend had the lasagne. Both were very tasty. The only setback was the portions. As with many high end Manhattan eateries, this place gave small portions. I will return, but this is not the place to satisfy your hunger."

  • "but service still slightly unpolished. Hopefully they can lift their game a little, as it is such a pretty venue with some outstanding food"

  • "One of my newly discovered Italian restaurants, it's now in my top 5 in all the US.. Try the chef's tasting menu. So delicious."

  • "I ordered orecchiette with rabe and sausage and the dish was overwhelmingly salty. I regret to say that I ate it anyway because my party was in a hurry and we did not have time to wait for a replacement dish. I mentioned it to the waiter and regret eating the pasta because the salty taste lasted well into the evening. The wine was great, the octopus appetizer OK, but overall the meal was not enjoyable."

  • "Once again, this fine restaurant did not disappoint."

  • "Il Rosi is an exceptionally good restaurant. The food is delicious and interestingly presented. I have had several dinners and a lunch...each was a treat. An added bonus is being able to buy ham, cheese, olives or extraordinary bread at the attractive counters as you are leaving! We will be back!"

  • "The food quality is very good and the presentation was beautiful, but the portion size was very small, even for NYC. Service was slow and not very attentive. Noise is about average for NYC. I was there with a client for a late lunch and the restaurant itself is beautiful and she does not eat very much so that worked out, but I would be selective about when I go back here."

  • "Very good food and service, however its listing as "$$" is just not correct. Think "$$$"."

  • "One of the best Italian restaurants in the city. Here, traditional Italian dishes are re-invented to offer the best culinary experience. A perfect mix of of tradition and creativity. It is pricey, but worth every cent."

  • "The food was excellent and it was a fun scene as well. Vibrant and fun but you could still hear each other talk"

  • "Our party of 7 was very impressed with the food, and the 2 gluten-free people were delighted by the gluten-free pasta, which they said was fabulous!"

  • "Thank you! It was perfect. Your lasagna is a perfect creation!"

  • "Went for lunch, had good antipasto, good to excellent pasta dishes, inspired desserts. Servers gave us time to sit and enjoy coffee. Take-out at front includes sophisticated ingredients, including different truffles."

  • "Really good food in a handsome (if a bit over the top) setting. Good menu and delicious salumi, too. Tables are way too small and the service was a bit confused, but all in all a fine experience was had. It is a bit over priced... I'd say by 20% or so given the competition."

  • "The restaurant charges high prices for traditional, even ordinary Italian food. You will never see an Italian eating here."
    Dined on 12/14/2013
  • "Casual section in the front, near the counters with cured meats, etc., for sale. More "formal" restaurant to the rear. Both attractive. We had a delicious lunch, with attentive service. If we lived in the neighborhood, we would have purchased some of the cured meats from the store to take home. And we'll definitely be back."

  • "While I don't have any issue paying for good food, we had lunch salads that were $19, tuna & chicken, but there was HARDLY ANY of those ingredients on them. We returned the salads and they added a bite or two more. The portions were ridiculously small and the salad wasn't really that tasty. The desserts and cappuccino's were delicious. Don't bother for a meal, go for dessert."

  • "My first time. 2 people. great table in the back room. Good selection of wines by the glass @ $15-20/glass. Specialize in charcuterie. Appetizers ~$20 portions large. Salami special and tuna Tartar both excellent. Primi $20-25. Spaghetti carbonara and fish ravoli excellent. With appetizer, enough food. good coffee and dessert. Total with tip $200. Not cheap, but in this location, worth the price."

  • "A surprisingly solid menu and nice atmosphere in an area of Manhattan not known for great restaurants. Superb pastas and a nice selection of wines by the glass. Very friendly service."
    Dined on 10/27/2013
  • "The Veal Milanese was overcooked, too much breading. The broccoli rabe tasted burnt. Maybe cooked at too high a temperature. The ravioli made with boar was delicious. Nicely appointed restaurant but clearly overpriced for this chef!!"

  • "We went here for an anniversary lunch and it was delightful! Food was outstanding (portions are on the small side but very flavorful) and the service never kept us wanting. The wine list is huge and there are also many "by the glass" options available. Service was on-hand but never overbearing."

  • "What a wonderful place. The food was amazing and the service was friendly and attentive. The prosciutto special was great addition to the appetizers. The menu is varied enough so that anyone can find a good meal. Certainly one that will be revisited many times."

  • "This is Tuscan food at its finest with respect for ingredients and presentation. Not a red sauce in sight. The pasta with mushrooms and truffles was perfectly balanced; the Veal Tonnato delicate and not smothered by a heavy sauce. The whole Branzino for two was a generous size and perfectly cooked. Six of us ate three or four courses and could find no fault with a variety of dishes. The food was matched by the quality of the service: friendly knowledgable and efficient. Sunday Moon is among the best sommeliers in the city. A gem."

  • "Great service. Wonderful Italian food. A great wine list. Plus an Italian deli. What more could you want."

  • "Quality dining experience with great service and warm and sincere welcome from hosting personnel. The one issue we had was perhaps an over abundance of unusual uses of herbs and spices, especially with desserts like panna cotta. Generally, people enjoy basic foods without the need for herbal flavoring. Overall, the dinner was most enjoyable, and the service was first rate including the secondary personnel who performed the simple tasks of filling water glasses and providing a pristine set up between courses. These individuals were cordial, thorough, and thoroughly professional yet most pleasant."

  • "The Italian grocery/restaurant ambience was delightful. Each delicious dish was visually presented in a unique way. What's more, the bread was excellent...especially the home-baked buiscuts. The service was friendly, knowledgeable and plentiful. But...with all this praise, there is one caveat. The overall prices of each dish...from the appetizers to the desserts, to the wines...were far too costly. To the point where my wife and I left the restuarant with the feeling of "Was it really worth it?""

  • "Chef Casella and his staff do the usual great job we have come to expect. from the Rosi brand. The only thing I would suggest is to make the entrees just a little bit bigger. In the US, especially for lunch, people tend to order only one dish, instead of the 2-3 course meals people customarily have in Italy."
    Dined on 8/19/2013
  • "Excellent cuisine; highly knowledgable staff; unique "deli" in the front where the appetizers and more can be purchased; elegant and upbeat decor...a bit pricey, so reserve this for the more special dinner (s)"

  • "Il Ristorante Rosi has a modest exterior, but a lovely interior (Pompeian wall paintings). Atmosphere was very welcoming, staff knowledgeable and helpful, but not intrusive. The menu is not overcrowded, but every dish seems well thought out. I highly recommend the controflletto di maiale (Berkshire pork chop, with polenta, summer squash, and cannellini); and the risotto of the day was excellent as well. The wine list has great variety, but many very good bottles for fairly modest prices. Sorry -- I was too full for dessert! All in all, a wonderful display of Italian skill and hospitality."
