  • "I could not have been more surprised at how bad this restaurant was! It is a cute little place in the best part of Old Town so you'd never expect to have a bad experience. Not only were the prices sky-high, but the food was very bland and boring. The manicotti's filling had no seasoning added to it at all and the pasta sauce for the pasta wasn't even up to store bought quality. I don't think even if the bill was reduced 50% I'd go back. What a total disappointment for such a great area. How do they stay open in an area known for their great food?"

  • "I booked a Valentines day dinner at Il Porto, and hoped for the best. First off, no "special" menu with zipped up prices. It was the normal menu and prices were modest. This restaurant offers a real treat:: appetizer sized portions of their other entrees for just $3/plate; what they call a "side". What a deal; we had 3 "sides" and our two main dishes. All 5 dishes we sampled were very good with the clams w linguini and white sauce, and the chicken marsala drawing special praise. Service was impeccable, despite a full and bustling restaurant. A wonderful time and exceeded expectations!"

  • "I was very surprised how empty this restaurant was for lunch. The location is good, the food was good. I had not been here for quite a few years. What I have found lately is that a lot of restaurants are not as busy right now....could it be the weather? At any rate, the food was good; the service was good, and it was quiet for a business conversation over lunch. My business guest enjoyed her shrimp with linguine. I feel sure the restaurant is more vibrant during the dinner hour."

  • "Il Porto was very nice as far as the service. Although our dishes were anything but unique. My Chicken pamigana only came with the breast fried with cheese and marinara. The breast was very thin and not very filling. My girlfriend ordered their special Cream Chicken Marsala. The Marsala dish was tasteless and bland. My date asked to have some of my food since it atleast tasted better. It was also very cold in our seats. We sat right next to the fire however we were still freezing. Service was great and its a great location and decor but IMO it wasnt worth the 100 dollars."

  • "We had a late reservation for 930pm and our food took an hour to reach our table. The restaurant was not slammed as many tables had opened up while we waited and were not filled. My girlfriend's order was served incorrectly, (her order came with white sauce when she requested red) and my veal parmesan was overbreaded. I did enjoy the red sauce, and pasta and the wine list is respectable, however, I would rate the overall meal as average. My experience certainly did not live up to expectations and I doubt I will return."

  • "This Old Town veteran was good, but pedestrian. The downstairs dining rooms are cozy and comfortable, but the bright lighting deprived the dining room of a more romantic or old-time feel. The food was decent, but not exceptional. The starter salad was small and tasty, but nothing fancy -- iceberg lettuce, some onions and tomatoes with some vinaigrette, clearly already prepared. The main courses were nicely done, though my veal picatta was a little heavy on the lemon juice, and came without any accompaniment, such as a vegetable or starch -- I had to order a side of pasta for $3 to get more than the four thin slices of veal. On the other hand, my wife's frutti di mare was very flavorful. The service was prompt and efficient."

  • "I went during restaurant week, and had a very dissatisfying experience. I know restaurants cook the special menu dishes in advance to accommodate large crowds, but everything was overcooked & tasted like it had been sitting all day. The calamari was heavily breaded, but had great flavor. It would have been better had it not been overcooked. The bread/butter was AMAZING! Salad was soggy and drenched in dressing. I can't remember the name of the dish, but it was 2 pastas w/ lobster, shrimp, scallops, crab? (Venezian -sp?). Again, another overcooked dish. I also had the tiramisu, which was still partially frozen on some layers, and overall did not taste that good. Low score due to the craziness of restaurant week. I'll give them another try."

  • "Il Porto is a long-standing favorite stop for my wife and I whenever we're in OT. Last couple of years we've taken another couple there for dinner to celebrate the wife's birthday. We esp. enjoy the upper level window seating overlooking King Street, particularly during the Christmas season. Traditional Italian menu with decent wine Dishes consistently well-prepared and presented, and service is always excellent."

  • "I ate there on a Saturday night. The noise level wasn't too bad given how much it filled up. A salad came too and I wouldn't have ordered the yummy antipasti if I'd known as the main course was a lot of food. I'd heard it was a seafood restaurant and enjoyed a seafood linguine but my companions ordered manicotti and veal and both were also pleased with their choices. I shared a chocolate dessert which was a true "delight". The setting is lovely, the service attentive. A very nice evening out."

  • "It was VERY expensive for what you're getting. A friend and I went for a nice Italian meal. We were sat at a tiny wobbly table against a wall. We looked around to see if we could be moved to another table, but all of the tables appeared the same. The prices were very high for what we got. I got a chicken marsala dish, which was tasty, but very small and still expensive. My friend got the chicken Parmesan. It did not come with pasta, and they charged for $4 for a small side of spaghetti. The bread was tasty, but all in all it was a little over budget for what we received."

It was a glorious sunny day and our excellent waiter held a window table for us where we could people watch while we enjoyed a leisurely, delicious lunch. This restaurant is located right on King Street just a block or so away from the river in Old Town Alexandria -- right in the heart of all the action. It very much reminds me of an elegant little European restaurant -- with great location, great food and great service!"

  • "Went for dinner during the 2013 holiday season. The rest. was very full and my gf and I were seated in a very tight section where they fit 4 other couples. Not much room to move or even pull your chair back. Service was decent but we felt very rushed as it looked like they were trying to move us through the meal quickly due to the wait at the front door. Food was ok, mainly stuck to seafood: mussels, calamari, seafood pasta."

  • "Perhaps because of the crowd on Christmas afternoon, the tables were packed close together. the tables were small and the chairs uncomfortable. The bread and salad were good but the escargot and veal saltimbocca were very poor. They lacked seasoning and were tasteless. They need a chef or a "cook" who knows how to cook. We probably will not return."

Neighbors who were in town were invited and all were happy with the meal, the atmosphere, and the decision. My parents have never gone out for Christmas dinner so this was a first for them and thankfully it was a good decision and a memorable Christmas dinn"
