A word from Il Pizzaiolo - Pittsburgh
When Il Pizzaiolo opened in 1996 we started with a simple credo: create Neapolitan pizza using old-world techniques and using the highest-quality ingredients available. Today, we hand-make nearly everything on the menu - from sweet fennel sausage, meatballs and pasta, to mozzarella and antipasto vegetables. If we don't hand-make it, it's imported from the best artisans, cheese makers and salumeria in the world. Our Mozzarella di bufala comes direct from Naples and we cook Pasta Faella; the best dried pasta in the world, always to order, always al dente. We bake our pizzas at 1000 degrees in a handcrafted, wood-fired brick oven for less than 90 seconds using perfectly leavened dough, San Marzano tomatoes, and extra virgin olive oil. The result is an authentic Neapolitan culinary experience with integrity. Buon Appetito!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Often go to Market Square in Pittsburgh but never had tried this restaurant....My friend and I really liked the food and all of the workers were very friendly...."

  • "This is the second time we've dined here. The first time we were seated upstairs but this time we were on the ground level. It was a special occasion as we had an out of town guest in for a visit. The lower level seating is 'meh'...no ambience. The food was good but not memorable (We all had pizza.) and not a great value. Wait staff was also average. I might give this another shot if we can be seated upstairs. I would mention this as a possible choice of eateries on the square but I wouldn't go out on a limb to push it."

  • "My family goes to Italy every year and this pizza is wonderful. The ingredients are fresh and the dough is spectacular. We waited a mysteriously long time for our food. Those that came in after us were fed before us. We only ordered pizza so I don't know why they were served 15 minutes before we were."

  • "We are so lucky to have Il Pizzaiolo closer to Pgh--we love the pizza here, and the service is always wonderful. Vincenza was an amazing waitress--thank you for a great night!"

  • "We decided to try this restaurant based on suggestions from friends and online reviews. The evening didn't start so well when we had to wait 15 - 20 mins because our reservation wasn't ready. I had also mentioned through the Open Table system that we would be celebrating a birthday and asked if they had candles (for the dessert) or something similar. The hostess told us they didn't do anything for birthdays. However, everything improved significantly once we sat down as the food and service was excellent. Our server even got us some candles for dessert!"

  • "Dined with finicky veggie oriented daughter, seafood fan wife, and old-school Italian foodie (me). All left very satisfied. The veggie plate app is amazingly fresh and flavorful. Pizza stands on its own merits. And the eggplant parm served in its own skillet was amongst the most tender flavorful I've ever had. Go."

  • "Dinner was great. We ordered the specials and they were very, very good. Our waitress was also very good and she made the experience terrific."

  • "Start to finish we were very pleased with our dining experience. The food & service was great! We dined at Meat & Potatoes" the night before and it was quite the opposite. We plan on dining at Il Pizzaiolo next trip to Pittsburgh!!"

  • "My opinion of course, but we had another great experience. This time we went to the Market Square location. Went for the pizza this time. It was difficult not ordering pasta. Because theirs is top notch. Started with calamari fritti. Very good. Not chewy, but unfortunately no tentacles. Just the tubes. To our surprise, they had rapini, what a treat. Finished with the MARGHERITA DOC. It was almost as good as the one I had in Naples. Just amazing. I was worried about going to this location because of some of the negative reviews mentioning the staff being rude and not knowledgable about the menu. This was not what we experienced. Our waitress answered every question we had regarding the food and drink. She was also very kind."

  • "Calamari is some of the best! Marinara sauce they make is not a favorite."

  • "If you're seeking good/very good dining in Market Square, this is worth checking out. We had the house salad with the swordfish entree, and it was excellent. Pesto sauce gave it so much flavor. The only downer was that the server brought our entree only minutes after we'd been served the salad. So much for enjoying one course at a time! Regardless, the food is good, and it beats the low-scale chains currently crowding Market Square."

  • "Our appetizers were perfection! The calamari was fresh and the prosciutto with buffalo mozzarella was amazing. Everyone was highly satisfied with their food, except for one who ordered pork. Our server was exceptional and highly knowledgeable about their products/ingredients. We would definitely return for another meal. I have also dined at the Mt. Lebanon location and they never disappoint! Authentic Italian food right here in Pittsburgh!"

  • "Looked forward to bringing our Dalla colleagues to Il Pizz Mkt Sq but it was a total embarassment. Our group of 4 was stuck at a table not suitable for 2 so dinner was a constant exchange of dishes and glasses just to accomodate our food-3 pizzas and a pasta dish did not fit on the wobbly table. The chairs were flimsy they kept falling over, without even being touched. Also I was called two times that morning to confirm my reservation so I gathered it was a crowded Wed night, however, we arrived at 5 for a 515 reservation and were rushed through drinks and ordering and eating. So much for a leisurely dining experience. Food was good drinks were ok. All in all it was a thoroughly unenjoyable evening for the mere price of $248."

  • "I came for my birthday because all I've wanted was a meat and cheese plate. I was so incredibly disappointed and thought about leaving when I found out you got rid of it. I don't understand why, it was delicious, convenient, quick. I believe a lot of other people felt this way and honestly, i probably won't come back because of it's absence. The beef stew I had was good, and the waiter did well but please consider bringing this back (and the pre-decided meats and cheeses that you have now don't count!) thank you."

  • "Could be the best pizza crust ever...their custom pizza oven does the job in 90 seconds and does it to perfection! Service was attentive and friendly. Branzino (sea bass) entree was cooked perfectly, and gnocchi were light, soft pillows of goodness that carried a simple but delicious tomato sauce with aplomb. Upstairs seating provided a lovely view of snowy Market Square. Can't wait to return!"

  • "Hostess was very pleasant, waiter knowledgeable and friendly. Two of us had the salmon with basil pesto, one had the veal chop and the other had chicken. We were all very pleased with the prompt but not rushed service. Will certainly go back again."

  • "I had a group of 3 at the restaurant on Friday night. My friend and I brought her special needs nephew. At first glance, he looks like everyone else, so some servers are taken off guard. Matt was our server, and we couldn't have asked for anyone better! Matt called him by name and obliged each hand shake and answered each question. Also, the host found our special persons drawing and money, called my cell, and hand delivered it to me at the Fairmont. These two men offer some hope to humanity. I have recommended the restaurant to everyone and shared this story. Thanks to Ll. BTW-the food was great, too!"

  • "The food was delicious, the service was very well timed and friendly. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Interacted with another couple that was seated close to us which was fun as well. The calamari was the lightest tastiest I have ever had. Everything was cooked to perfection!"

  • "We had good food and service. We were seated at a horrible table - the "4-top" tables upstairs do NOT seat even 3 people comfortably. The seating in general was just too crowded. This is just a personal pet peeve but I'm tired of restaurants who charge 15+ for a personal size pizza or 20+ for pasta and it doesn't include a small salad. That would be a nice touch to round out what really was very good food."

  • "Very enjoyable. Portions are extremely large. I ordered soup and sandwich and either would have been enough."

  • "I love this place, but it was very slow for lunch. They gave our pizza to the table next to us, so had to wait a long time for our pizza, and then for our check. Disappointing. I'll be back and hope that it doesn't happen again.."

  • "Downstairs the tables are tight and small, so don't expect to have a private discussion. Friendly staff and very clean, new location. Both of us had pizzas and they were very good. But in the higher price range for what you get."

  • "We visited late one night and had some great drinks and fun with the folks at the bar. Very vibrant bar scene. We came back the next day for lunch and had great service. Asked thew waiter if we could have bolognese with variouis typs of noodles - no problem and we all at the table had it. Fantastic !!! Will return for sure."

  • "We had a group of 7 grabbing early dinner before going to the theater. We heard that the food was good but were pleasantly surprised to find it to be great. The food was only surpassed by the friendly and professional service. We often seek out Italian cuisine but found this to be one of the best we experienced anywhere. It is a definite "revisit soon" restaurant experience. Dan S"

  • "To combat the cold air, the restaurant installed a temporary vestibule. However, the outer door did not stay shut and it got very chilly at my table. Otherwise, a terrific lunch. Thumbs up! But wear a sweater."

  • "We were steated upstairs at 9:30 on a Monday and the inattentive staff was busy clearing tables, folding napkins and getting ready for the next day. A waiter came over to greet us, and told us someone else would be taking care of us, but they never appeared and we had to track down someone else to see who was going to take our order. After at least another 20 minutes we were served drinks. Patrons at the bar we watched sit down after us, were eating food before we even had our order taken. The disruptive noise level at the next table, and the loud music playing made it difficult to carry on a conversation. The pizza did not live up to the description presented by the waiter, so we were dissappointed."

  • "Overall it's an excellent restaurant in terms of providing exceptional service and quality of food. Our server, Steve, was extremely accommodating and professional. He was so helpful in getting our son food, and making him feel special. Deborah was also very helpful in getting us a table to accommodate a new born. We truly love this restuarant! And highly recommend it!"
