A word from Il Pizzaiolo - Mt. Lebanon
Opened in 1996 by Pittsburgh native Ron Molinaro, Il Pizzaiolo started with a simple credo: create Neapolitan pizza using old-world techniques and the highest-quality ingredients available. Since then, the restaurant has become a vibrant gathering place for lovers of Neapolitan pizza, pasta and Italian wine. Nearly everything on the menu is hand-made. And if it’s not made in-house, it’s imported from the best artisans, cheese-makers and salumeria in the world. Mozzarella di Bufala comes direct from Naples every Thursday and the pizzas are baked at 1000˚ in a handcrafted, wood-fired brick oven for less than 90 seconds. This, along with perfectly leavened dough, San Marzano tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil, produces the most authentic Neapolitan pizza possible.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I'll say that the food was good and warm when it arrived, but the prices are too high. The service was friendly enough, but pretty inattentive and the food took a long time to arrive. 45 minutes is a bit too long to wait for lunch. So $80 (including tip) for a lunch for two that took almost two hours when there are many comparable options in the Mt. Lebanon area will have us going elsewhere."

  • "The waiter was very good, the food excellent. It was like sitting in Europe out on the patio and when the rain started and almost everyone had to go in, we didn't, cause we were under a tree and didn't even know it was raining. A very nice evening"

  • "We took friends for the first time so we wanted reservations so we didn't wait all night.! We got there and wanted outside terrace dining. They told us that we could not use our reservation for that area, but we were seated in the back bar, which has such a great feel we loved that! Our food was good, but came out in weird timing. We actually thought that they forgot our main course since it took a while to come to the table. We ordered a few appetizers, salad, pizzas, and pasta. The food was very good! The entire dining experience was almost 2 hours. The wine list is a little challenging to read. The server and bartender did a nice job in finding something comparable to what we wanted The food is a little pricey for pizza and pasta."

  • "I prefer the outdoor patio than their dining room. Food was good along with the service."

  • "Food is very good. Prices have gotten much higher lately...quite pricey . Pizzas more $ and size is smaller. Used to be able to share between 2 of us....not anymore..."

  • "The food at this restaurant is always amazing - I've never been disappointed. Everyone in our party of 7 was happy with their meals."

  • "Food and service great. A bit loud this time...but we love going here."

  • "Our server was great, as was the food!! However, it was all overpriced. We ordered 2 glasses of wine, one large salad, 2 pizzas, 2 desserts, 2 coffees = $95. We were supposed to have bread at the table w/our salad, but they were out of bread. Odd. The salad and pizzas (1- spicy salami; 1- mushroom) were excellent!! The lemon dessert was also very good. The pear dessert was bland."

  • "My friends all had great things to say about this place, but I wasn't impressed. We sat in the wine bar, waited over an hour, despite there only being one table sat at. The food was average at best. The service was so-so, probably would've been better if the bartender didn't have to watch the bar (which was full) and 3 tables by herself. There was 9 of us, so maybe the experience would be better with only 2-4, but I don't think I'll be itching to get back anytime soon."

  • "Food was really delicious and arrived quickly. Both my husband and I were happy with our choices. Only complaint was after my husband and I had ordered and gotten our food, we heard our waiter and then another waiter mention a special they were offering, we were never told there was a special. We wouldn't have ordered it on this night once we heard what it was, but it could have been something we wanted so should have had the option to choose it,"

  • "Nice place but very noisy. Service good in general. Of the six diners they got one of the orders wrong but ended up taking the entree off of the final bill."

  • "Il pizzaiolo has some of the best pizza in Pittsburgh. Try the prosciutto and arugula."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "The prociutto arugala pizza is incredible but you can't go wrong with any pizza on the menu."

  • "My wife and I ate in the wine bar for a Friday night date night. We had delicious wine and started with the arancini followed by the prosciutto and arugula pizza. Everything was great. There was a very noisy table next to us, but it was Friday night and we were in the bar so we knew what to expect. We'll definitely be back. "

  • "Great pizza, excellent wine; the wine bar was too noisy we should have sat outside on the patio which is always very nice."

  • "Dining alfresco in the beautiful garden on the consistently delicious Il Pizzaiolo food is one of my favorite things to do! Incredibly enjoyable... feels like a little touch of Italy and the wait staff are always calm yet courteous, knowledgable and there only when you need them! Will always remain a "special treat" to me! "

  • "I have come to Il Pizzaiolo on multiple occasions and most recently did so for my boyfriend's birthday. Our reserved table was ready the moment that we stepped in the door and our server was attentive throughout the entire evening. We each had the lasagne, which was absolutely delicious. Il Pizzaiolo never fails to satisfy! "

  • "We saw the reviews of this place and decided to check it out. Our food was ok, but the prices here are unbelievable. My wife had the lasagna and I had the rigatoni and meatballs. Lasagna was very good, rigatoni and meatballs was average. We each had a glass of wine and our bill with tip (20%) was $75.00. I just relocated here but I think there are probably better options. "

  • "Food was good, but service was poor. Previously, I had been to the Market square location where waiter explained the menu (what was imported, what was made in-house, etc). None of that. You don't have one waiter here, as another stopped, we ordered appetizers but that info never made it to the kitchen. Though, did make up for it with dessert, when we brought it to our attention. "

  • "We sat outdoors on the patio, which was beautiful. The salads are delightful and perfectly dressed. The pizzas are decent, especially the pizza with partially fried dough. The ravioli is very good. The service is friendly and professional. The dessert is fabulous -- especially the cannoli. My only complaint is how long it took to receive our coffee order--no exaggeration, it was at least 30 minutes. Apparently they only have one espresso machine? The coffee came at least 20 minutes after they brought out our dessert, which was a disappointment. "

  • "Il Pizzaiolo is a regular dining spot for us. The food is always fresh and authentic. Consistently delicious and vibrant atmosphere. Brick oven pizza and pasta is our local favorite."

  • "I'm so happy that Il Pizzaiolo is on Open Table - this place is extremely popular, so having a reservation is a huge plus. We love the patio, but the dining room is uncomfortably loud. I keep hoping they'll install some sort of sound absorbing material on the ceiling or walls."

  • "Arguably one of Pittsburgh's best restaurants-- authentic, highest quality Italian. Appetizers, soup, pasta, main dishes-- all are superb. Service is personal and doesn't disappoint. My personal favorite restaurant in the ' burgh and eat here at least once each week "

  • "As the place has a nice out dor dining area, we made that request via open table. The restaurant totally ignored that, so when we arrived we were seated inside as the outdoor area was not yet opened. Yet they were serving out on the street as it was a nice day. Next was a young I attentive staff, although our server was decent. But good servers give good service to those whose first order is a bottle of wine. Last was the expensive food. Poor salad. Lasagna was so has I ate less than half. Never again."

  • "The pizza and appetizers are delicious and the staff is professional but not stuffy. The wine bar is intimate without being subdued, which makes this a great spot for meeting a group of old friends while enjoying authentic Neapolitan pizza."

  • "Really, I don't know why it took me so long to visit Il Pizzaiolo. The food that we orderered was spectacular. My girlfriend and I shared an antipasto plate, which really could have been a nice appetizer for 4 people. She also had the soup of the day, and I ordered a plate of meatballs. Both were excellent, although the temperature of the meatballs was a bit low. For our entrees we ordered lasagna and ravioli. Wow, that lasagna was good! My ravioli was delicious as well. Drinks were a little slow to come out, and they ran out of my brand of gin after 1 martini. The server was very friendly, and mostly attentive. The espresso I had after dinner was some of the best I've had anywhere. I would go here just for the espresso."

  • "The food & service stood out on our first meal here at the Washington Road location. Interesting food combinations with very knowledgeable staff. They appear to bring in new ingredients to try on a regular basis keeping the menu fresh. They have a wine bar upstairs that we will have to go next times as it is only open in the evenings. Downstairs was quite loud though. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal will be back."

  • "First let me start by saying we were greeted and seated promptly ( yes, we had reservations ) The salad and bread was fresh. But dinner...hmmm. Our order was taken by either a host or manager because the waiter was busy. My wife wanted the roasted vegetables on the recommendation of a friend. The host explained the dish was served at room temp, not hot or even warm. I had the eggplant parm which was good but small. The roasted veg dish looked very unappetizing with blackened zuchinni and eggpplant and a pile of slimy looking mushrooms and tasted just as bad. That dish should be served warm at the very least or taken off the menu. Everything is grossly overpriced for what you get. Had they been more inline I'd have rated the place higher."

  • "I decided to take some out-of-town family to dinner, and of course I wasn't disappointed, and neither were they! Casey, our server, went above and beyond, especially when it came to making sure they 3-year old was happy and had food that was to her liking. He even went and found a cushion for her to sit on, since she was too big for the high chair, and a little too small for the regular table chair. The food was awesome, and my family is still talking about the great food. Definitely will be back soon!"

  • "Make sure you eat upstairs in the wine bar. The food us great everywhere but the ambience is terrific in the wine bar. Outside dining is just as nice. I don't eat lasagna but don't miss it here!"

  • "Gathered here with a group of friends for a nice dinner. Most of us had soup-- either the house wedding or a zesty sausage with chickpea. Wines are available by the glass but are a bit pricey. Place is best known for its great pasta dishes and also neapolitan pizzas. We tried various ones, all of which looked great! Even on a Monday, place gets very crowded and can be a bit noisy. But always a favorite."

  • "I made a reservation on a Saturday afternoon for a Sunday evening dinner with no problem getting my desired time. The wine list was extensive with some nice wines to chose from. We started with meatballs for an appetizer which everyone at the table were in agreement that they were delicious. Two in our party had pizza, the crust is thin and the sauce was tasty. One person had the gnocchi, another yummy dish and one person had the eggplant parm. It was a large portion and was again, delicious. It is a bit noisy in the restaurant and some of the tables are very close together. But the brick oven in the dining room gives a nice ambiance to the restaurant."
