Opened in 1996 by Pittsburgh native Ron Molinaro, Il Pizzaiolo started with a simple credo: create Neapolitan pizza using old-world techniques and the highest-quality ingredients available. Since then, the restaurant has become a vibrant gathering place for lovers of Neapolitan pizza, pasta and Italian wine. Nearly everything on the menu is hand-made. And if it’s not made in-house, it’s imported from the best artisans, cheese-makers and salumeria in the world. Mozzarella di Bufala comes direct from Naples every Thursday and the pizzas are baked at 1000˚ in a handcrafted, wood-fired brick oven for less than 90 seconds. This, along with perfectly leavened dough, San Marzano tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil, produces the most authentic Neapolitan pizza possible.Continued

  • "As the place has a nice out dor dining area, we made that request via open table. The restaurant totally ignored that, so when we arrived we were seated inside as the outdoor area was not yet opened. Yet they were serving out on the street as it was a nice day. Next was a young I attentive staff, although our server was decent. But good servers give good service to those whose first order is a bottle of wine. Last was the expensive food. Poor salad. Lasagna was so has I ate less than half. Never again."

  • "Really, I don't know why it took me so long to visit Il Pizzaiolo. The food that we orderered was spectacular. My girlfriend and I shared an antipasto plate, which really could have been a nice appetizer for 4 people. She also had the soup of the day, and I ordered a plate of meatballs. Both were excellent, although the temperature of the meatballs was a bit low. For our entrees we ordered lasagna and ravioli. Wow, that lasagna was good! My ravioli was delicious as well. Drinks were a little slow to come out, and they ran out of my brand of gin after 1 martini. The server was very friendly, and mostly attentive. The espresso I had after dinner was some of the best I've had anywhere. I would go here just for the espresso."

They appear to bring in new ingredients to try on a regular basis keeping the menu fresh. They have a wine bar upstairs that we will have to go next times as it is only open in the evenings. Downstairs was quite loud though. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal will be back."

  • "I decided to take some out-of-town family to dinner, and of course I wasn't disappointed, and neither were they! Casey, our server, went above and beyond, especially when it came to making sure they 3-year old was happy and had food that was to her liking. He even went and found a cushion for her to sit on, since she was too big for the high chair, and a little too small for the regular table chair. The food was awesome, and my family is still talking about the great food. Definitely will be back soon!"

  • "First let me start by saying we were greeted and seated promptly ( yes, we had reservations ) The salad and bread was fresh. But dinner...hmmm. Our order was taken by either a host or manager because the waiter was busy. My wife wanted the roasted vegetables on the recommendation of a friend. The host explained the dish was served at room temp, not hot or even warm. I had the eggplant parm which was good but small. The roasted veg dish looked very unappetizing with blackened zuchinni and eggpplant and a pile of slimy looking mushrooms and tasted just as bad. That dish should be served warm at the very least or taken off the menu. Everything is grossly overpriced for what you get. Had they been more inline I'd have rated the place higher."

  • "Gathered here with a group of friends for a nice dinner. Most of us had soup-- either the house wedding or a zesty sausage with chickpea. Wines are available by the glass but are a bit pricey. Place is best known for its great pasta dishes and also neapolitan pizzas. We tried various ones, all of which looked great! Even on a Monday, place gets very crowded and can be a bit noisy. But always a favorite."

  • "I made a reservation on a Saturday afternoon for a Sunday evening dinner with no problem getting my desired time. The wine list was extensive with some nice wines to chose from. We started with meatballs for an appetizer which everyone at the table were in agreement that they were delicious. Two in our party had pizza, the crust is thin and the sauce was tasty. One person had the gnocchi, another yummy dish and one person had the eggplant parm. It was a large portion and was again, delicious. It is a bit noisy in the restaurant and some of the tables are very close together. But the brick oven in the dining room gives a nice ambiance to the restaurant."

  • "My boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's Day dinner and were not disappointed. The food was incredible (usually house made with ingredients imported from Italy) and our server was very helpful with the menu. Everyone was so friendly and considerate, and we were up in the wine bar which has a great ambience. Great food without a pretentious atmosphere. Definitely planning on coming back and going to the downtown location as well."

  • "6 People. $300. For pizza and Pasta. Couldnt hear the person next to me, we shouted the entire time. Ive had more flavor in a chain Pizza place then here and thats what was most surprising. THE best Restaurant in PGH is right next door, Bistro 19. Im sorry! I really wanted to love it here! (I aso brought an 80 year old Italian who knows Italian food better then anyone and he was also not impressed by anything there) :("

  • "This restaurant has a great wood burning oven and they make pretty good pizzas which come closest to Neapolitan style among many places we've tried around Pittsburgh. The pizza dough was good but the toppings were a bit excessive. Quattro formaggi was overloaded; although the cheeses were tasty the amount was just too much. Margherita was very good but unfortunately had too much sauce which tasted a bit like a supermarket brand. The service was very good and friendly. The level of noise is very high, it was difficult to hear people talking from right across the table, but it didn't bother us because the overall impression was that everyone was having a great time. We recommend this place and will definitely try it again."

  • "I have been to this restaurant several times and it is one of my favorites. This visitwas to say farewell to a friend who was moving. The server seemed uninterested in our table and agitated that we were there taking our time to pick a wine or decide on meal choise; almost as if she were irritated that we were taking too long. She would walk away exasperated. We paid our bills which were asked to be seperated, and they were - incorrectly - but we still sat talking and not one time did anyone come over to check and see if maybe we wanted to order some more wine, drinks, etc. Overall, disappointed in this visit. It will make me think twice before bringing a larger party there, and our party was only 6 people."
