A word from Il Pittore
Nestled on a small side street at the edge of Rittenhouse Square, Il Pittore brings the romantic spirit of Italy to Philadelphia. Its quaint ambiance, created by rich woods, hand-painted murals and a rooftop herb garden, invokes the cozy feeling of a villa in the Italian countryside. Highly acclaimed Chef Chris Painter uses his culinary artistry to bring the fresh flavors of Italian ingredients to a truly modern menu. To accompany your meal, our sommelier will adeptly assist you with a selection from our 200 bottle Italian wine list. On the first floor, a dining counter for 12 and a communal table for 8 bring people together in a vibrant social setting to share a glass of wine and a bowl of pasta. The main dining room on the second floor provides guests with a more traditional a la carte dining experience. A large bay window, skylight, communal table and comfortable banquette seating set the mood for a memorable meal. We look forward to your visit. Ciao and grazie! Continued

  • "we started this warm night out on the sidewalk at the bar, open to the restaurant. We enjoyed the best Negronis ever while we watched other passersby out on this great spring night. We then went up to the great upstairs dining space...had a comfortable table by the window. Our food was fabulous...one of our guests felt the stracchiatella was as good as his Italian mother's! The entire staff, from the hostesses, bartender and wait staff were warm, engaging, informative and attentive....a fantastic night!"

  • "An exquisite gem in Philly. The pasta dishes are incredible. Best part of the meal is to order several and split them. Wine list is excellent and staff is knowledgable."

  • "The food, the service, the setting - we had a perfect evening. The white asparagus soup was perhaps the best soup I have ever eaten (and I order soup A LOT!) The wine list is a guided tour of Italy and the sommelier is very helpful. But let me hasten to add that there is nothing stuffy about this restaurant. It is warm and welcoming and we will be back."

  • "food excellent and wine list very good! we will be back!"

  • "Food was decent. My wife and I really enjoyed the antipastas. However, we must have heard "sorry" or "our apologies" about 20 times. First, it was our waiter being late then it was a mix up with the bread. Overall, it was nice to try but we won't be going back."

  • "Great find. Lowkey, authentic. Superb, interesting food. Beautifully prepared. Dreamy sashimi. Tasty entrees. Homemade sorbets from heaven. Beyond excellent service. Wish they were in my Chicago neighborhood."

  • "The service was outstanding. Most of the wait staff was extremely attentive. The food was excellent, too, except for the cod puree, which tasted overly salty."

  • "We definitely got the 'stink eye' for bringing our 3 year old daughter here at prime dinner hour (which I totally understand). But after the first 1/2 hour with no problems, the staff was very gracious to her&us. But, I would not bring my daughter back here unless for an early dinner, simply not a great spot for young kids. As for the food, pasta dishes are the real stand out here, imo. We shared 4 apps and 5 pasta dishes among our table of 5 (well, table of 4+ the toddler). Despite the waiters warnings, it was plenty of food for everyone and we still had some room to split a couple desserts. Overall, fun place, great food - a real crowd pleaser. I love to bring guests from out of town here. We will be back soon."

  • "This was at least the fourth time I dined at this restaurant and it was the best ever!"

  • "Yes, the food was fantastic and the servers attentive. The ambiance was relaxed and every aspect of dining I could think about was really quite nice (to the point where I didn't have to think about it at all). This is definitely a "diner is king" type of restaurant. I also noticed an extensive wine list that I unfortunately didn't take part in. But the best part the experience was the timing of the courses. It was perfection. There was no wondering about the food or where it was, everything was delicious and on time. Two hours easily passed by without thought! I wouldn't recommend this for people who are looking to quickly eat something and then leave, but I would for people who are looking to relax and enjoy themselves in their own time!"

  • "We are repeat fans of il Pittore…Chef Painter's food is exquisite…every dish brims with unique, exceptional flavors! While other chefs like Vernick, Serpico and Kulp have richly earned their recognition, Chef Painter deserves a place in the very top ranks of Philadelphia chefs…. and the Sommelier, Fracis, is arguably the best in the City….! The wait service needs to be kicked up a notch….it is professional and attentive, but VERY slow….."

  • "The hostess and wait staff were particularly accommodating as we were running very late for our reservations, and as a result, had a limited amount of time to get in/out in order to make a show at the Kimmel Center. They treated us with exceptional care and were very attentive to our needs."

  • "The food was outstanding. It looked like the servers and hence the service was disorganized. The timing was off. Whe a maître d' asked how our meal was I complained about the service. He was a little snippy and the restaurant gave us desser to compensate. We will try Il Pittore again."

  • "Some of the best service I have ever had. The manager made the night beyond enjoyable. However, the food, which was mostly exotic takes on italian fare, was extremely salty for some reason-almost all of it."

  • "Interesting décor, friendly and attentive service, imaginative dishes - excellent place. Appetizers were outstanding, the Entres were too salty for our taste. We will be back!"

  • "Great food, excellent service, extensive wine list of Italian wines. Somewhat pricey, but well worth it."

  • "The staff at Il Pittore almost anticipated what we wanted before we even asked for it. Everyone we encountered was so accommodating. The menu is unique - it's built with the intention that you'll order something from each section which allows you to try lots of different food in smaller portions.Everything was absolutely delicious and even my husband who is a picky eater cleaned his plate. We'll Be back!"

  • "Each course was rich and flavorful, but it wasn't overly seasoned or too fatty. The roast pig had an incredible crust that made the skin feel like another ingredient, but still had all that awesome skin taste. I love blue cheese, so the cheese plate was perfect with one soft, one hard, and one blue. The honeycomb accompaniment was perfect to pair with the blue. Pasta portions were appropriate, with a hardier ragu for the rabbit tagliatelle. We ended the meal with the chocolate bomboloni, which were perfect little chocolaty donuts filled with nutella. We will definitely return."

  • "Me and two other friends went to celebrate one of our birthdays. The food was EXCELLENT, however, the all around experience took away from how great the food was. Our problem was our waiter. He was pushy and tried to pressure us into ordering more food. We were three ladies in the party and he kept calling us "gals" and his condescending demeanor made us all uncomfortable. I would not go back, if only to avoid the awful waiter."

  • "We consider ourselves foodies, and we have been disappointed the past few months finding restaurants that we would return to based on the menu alone...this is definitely one we will be returning to."

  • "Consistently delicious food and excellent service are the hallmarks of this restaurant. The wine list is crafted to compliment the menu and offers many great choices."

  • "Il Pittore is a favorite. Everyone teases me because I always leave saying it was the best dinner I have ever had...this time I am sure!!! I wouldn't have changed one thing about my dinner. Thank you to chef and everyone else. We love you all!"

  • "Veal cheeks, brussels sprouts and scallops from the tasting menu were great. The pastas were not as exciting, and I expected more for the price."

  • "I have been to several other Stephen Starr restaurants and have never been overwhelmed. Mostly just okay or felt severely ripped off. But Il Pittore, from beginning to end was just a terrific experience. The food was excellent as was the overall vibe of the place ( a little noisy at first but that seems to be the acceptable norm these days) but I was most impressed by the service. From the hostesses to the bartenders and waiters, all were exceedingly helpful and pleasant. All young but no standard "Hi Guys" even though my date was clearly not a guy and not what I want to hear when spending 30+ an entrée. I would go back again in a heartbeat a beat and would recommend highly."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful meal at Il Pittore. The food was excellent (the bruschetta was excellent and the veal cheeks were amazing); the service friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere perfect for a great night out. Highly recommended!"

  • "It's been a long time since I have been this enthusiastic about a restaurant! To say I am enthusiastic about Il Pittore is an understatement! Our recent dinner there was just incredible! I can't rave enough about it! The food was absolutely perfect -- I can't wait to go again! (Although I'm afraid I won't be back there too soon, as it is quite expensive). But it is well worth the expense, because each dish is perfection -- not only the taste but the presentation. Everything was so delicious, and my husband totally agreed with me. And, to top it off, every single staff member was the most kind and efficient I have ever encountered at any restaurant! It was an unforgettable experience, to say the least!"

  • "Mixed feelings. Food is good tasting in some dishes and very unremarkable in others. Service was trying too hard to please where it didn't matter, but was confusing and nonexistent when it did matter. Ambiance was the only thing that we really liked. From the Starr group restaurants in Philly this was the most disappointing experience for us."
