A word from Il Mulino Uptown
For nearly 35 years, Il Mulino New York has prepared authentic Abruzzese cuisine with unparalleled service.

There’s no place like Il Mulino New York. The luxury Italian restaurant’s flagship Greenwich Village outpost initiated New York’s fine Italian dining trend and is still prized in the city’s elite dining scene. Zagat has rated Il Mulino New York as Manhattan’s No. 1 Italian restaurant for decades and has said the restaurant provides "one-of-a-kind" cuisine filled with delicious flavors, creating an "outstanding Italian classic" restaurant where "every dish is a masterpiece."

Executive Chef Michele Mazza, who hails from Naples, Italy, has proudly carried this tradition since 2003. Fresh ingredients, artistic preparation and impeccable service distinguish Il Mulino New York as one of the world’s premiere restaurants. In addition to fine dining, Il Mulino New York provides excellent off-site catering and products.

Diner Reviews
  • "Went for Restaurant Week for lunch.Appetizers of Caprese Salad and Mussels were very good.Main course of Chicken was so so.Menu was very limited.Desserts were good. Had much better experience at Long Island site."

  • "Waiter clearly annoyed with people sticking with the restaurant week menu. The food was below average and very simple. There were not many choices. One of our dishes was wrong and one dessert was brought to the table broken up.....The restaurant was not busy but the waiters couldn't wait to pick up our plates to the point that it was annoying"

  • "while the food was good, it was also way over-priced! the restaurant is also very dark, we had to use our iPhone lights to see the menu! the wait staff was gracious, although I've never been asked for a "captain's" tip before. overall, worth checking out if you want good food and are willing to pay a high price."

  • "Go to DOWNTOWN IL MULINO! Do not go to the uptown. Uptown was disappointing at best. It was diner food and service with none of the charm and excellence of its Greenwich Village namesake."

  • "We ordered the RestaurantWeek lunch, which I can only describe as minimalist and not representative of the regular menu. Other establishments do not serve RW meals with reluctance but see them as a sample to encourage customers to return."

  • "My friends and I came for restaurant week and so the dishes served were perhaps not highly representative of this establishment. The portions were miniscule and the quality was sub-par. The service was impeccable though with every attention to detail."

  • "This restaurant does not live up to its reputation. The atmosphere was pleasant. The only good thing about our food was my appetizer of porcini mushroom ravioli in a cream sauce. It was excellent, which raised my anticipation of the arrival of more mouth watering food. Unfortunately, the salmon had no taste...salmon without a taste???!!! Vegetable greasy. The chocolate flourless cake, words cannot describe. If going, order the ravioli as a main dish and skip everything else. Service, he forgot to bring my espresso. We chased down waiters for everything we needed."

  • "But the spaghetti and meatballs was bland... The pasta is really cooked al dente, which I love and sometimes is difficult to find in NY."

  • "We had a nice lunch, but the portions were small, and the choices not too exciting. Also, the wait staff was intrusive - they were pushing us out the door, so that there would be a higher turnover. However, they were warmer to their regulars."

  • "This original restaurant in the Village enjoyed the reputation as the best Italian in Manhattan. So our expectation was big about this UES new comer. To summarize it, it was a disappointment - the first course was the best. The past was too soft and dry. The dessert was too sweet and nothing special. Over all, for nothing wonderful the price is too high."

  • "Totally unprepared for RW. Ran out of choices! Mussels delicious, but rest disappointing."

  • "Great dishes, great ingredients, but conservative and traditional. Does not take chances with modern Italian cuisine the way A Voce, I Trulli and Felidia do."

  • "My wifes' doctor recommended Il Mulino to us when she mentioned we were going to city for a day .. the experience we had was actually pretty nice up until we were brought our entree, the rib-eye, which was a special ... bad tasting and over-cooked, which stunned us, since we usually won't shy away from seeking out restaurants that may be pricey, which Il Mulino delinetly is ... Nice way to bring down what otherwise would have been a good experience. The pre-dinner wine at the bar, the cheese, etc. offerings when 1st seated, and the dessert, all outstatnding. But again the entree, along with a waiter being a bit too much on the smug side, and, well, we could'nt wait to leave."

  • "My husband and I enjoy dining in NYC throughout the year, and we finally made reservations at Il Mulino. If you like waiters and servers who make you feel they are being inconvenienced this is the place for you! Servers literally dropped plates of food on our table when we arrived, a tomato actually bounced off the table onto my lap, then the floor. The waiter was looking everywhere but at us when going over the menu, and the noise level was extremely loud. Poor acoustics, blah ambiance. This is our last time here ... Prices far exceed quality of food as well."

  • "Theres, nothing unique about the food Sure great bread The entree was good but not nothing Special or different"

  • "I work next door & have one thing to say, it was amazing. Once we walked in we were very welcomed and seated right away. Before you order anything, they offer bruschetta, mussles, parmesan cheese (cut from a huge piece), salami, and fried zucchinni (at least thats what I think it was). My gf and I split everything and told our waiter that we were splitting it all so he brought out everything on 2 plates. We ordered a salad with pears and goat cheese, beef carpaccio, prosciutto and melon, truffle cream sauce porcini ravioli, spaghetti carbonara, & a tiramisu & drinks. The salad was ok, but the proscuitto really just melted in our mouths. The ravioli was absolutely delicious and mind you I do not like mushroom. Overall pricey, but I loved it."

  • " referred to Il Mulino by many friends. However, the location that was recommended to us was the downtown location. Since we were in the theatre district I chose the uptown restaurant. We were greeted immediately and warmly. As soon as we sat down a flurry of happy servers dispensed small plates of appetizers-bruschetta, cheese, breads, zucchini sliced thin and fried, and a type of salami. For dinner we ordered: rack of lamb, double cut veal chop, and spaghetti carbonara. Without breaking down the failure of each dish, someone in the kitchen was heavy handed with salt. That was the consensus. The waiter was informed and apologized. So did the manager. They tried to fix the same dishes instead of making new. We will never go back."

  • "You'd never go hungry here. They start feeding you as soon as you sit down. The service was sketchy at times, although friendly and mostly efficient. It took awhile to get menus, which was fine in this case since they give you so much "amuse". Then they tried to give us our bill before we were done. Slight miscommunication amongst the servers."

  • "After going to the top in Manhattan- Daniel and Per Se, Il Mulino had the best service. We loved the appetizers that descend when you enter. We had a pasta starter and a fish for an entree. I highly suggest the black truffle pasta if it is available."

  • "We've tried getting into Il Molino for years and just found their uptown location. We went on a Sunday evening, and it was only 1/2 occupied. I had the Branzino, and it was mushy, not filleted at the table. My husband had a very al dente, heavy pasta. There were 3 or 4 levels of servers, but not one "just responsible for us." We were disappointed."

  • "OK, the food is wonderful, service impeccable and ambiance suitably uptown. But no bread basket, what have you done to the garlic sticks? No more uptown for Johnny P."

  • "I lived in NYC for 20 years and Il Mulino was the top 20 restaurant to which I never made it so took a client there for lunch versus Le Veau d' Or, just around the corner. Il Mulino Uptown has no patina and the food doesn't sparkle like Grammercy Tavern. Just kind of boring. Will never go back. Just not that good. Flat."

  • "food was very good but have been a long time customer of il mulino on w. 3rd st nyc and find the food better. would go to il mulino uptown for a business lunch if im in the area but otherwise i would continue to patronize il mulino downtown on a regular basis as i have for the last 20 years."

  • "We went to Il MULINO to celebrate a birthday. We had eaten in their sister restaurant in Puerto Rico last year and it was awesome. So for his birthday we decided to make a trip to NYC from Virginia. When we were seated we were offered a choice of a table at the dining room entrance or one at the kitchen door. There were other tables available. The first course of octopus was good. I ordered veal saltimboca and it was the WORST veal I have ever experienced . It was so mealy it tasted more like overdone chopped steak. My partner ordered shrimp that tasted old and had a very soggy batter. Now you would think someone would have asked if we enjoyed but no. Next time go to Peasant,s in soho where you will save a ton of money and get great food."

  • "We went for the first time to Il Mulino Uptown at a relatively early time (5:30) as we were going to the theatre at the Park Avenue Armory. No sacrifice in terms of food, warmth of service and experience. All tremendous."

  • "The reviews on Internet were not wrong, noisy, slow to order, pushing for expensive food. The worst thing was that we ordered two courses each people and they didn't tell me what I ordered for the main dish was for two people. So we ended up to waste lots of food. And pay attention to ask them about the price of the specials because both of the specials we ordered were double the price of the dishes on the menu. Good luck. "

  • "It was my second time in this location and prefer this one to the downtown venue. The appetizer trio was very good but I was a bit disappointed in my main dish which was billed as a signature dish. It was a pounded veal parmiggiana on the bone. I have had this dish elsewhere and have enjoyed it more in other restaurants. I also find the service to be cold and impersonal. The only exception was the beverage/wine/dessert waiter who was very nice. He offered us a '97 brunello at a very reasonable price point. The restaurant was also very warm and we asked more than once for the temp to be adjusted but it clearly fell on deaf ears."

  • "This was my first time at Il Mulino uptown. I've been to the downtown location several times but was staying uptown and wanted to give it a try. The food and service were impeccable. My biggest complaint is that they don't mention the price for the specials. I guess we could of asked, but my husband ordered the sole special and when we got the bill, we saw it was $75. We were in shock, we travel a lot and my husband is a fish snob and we've never seen a fish special so pricey. The fish was delicious and prepared beautifully, but just way too overpriced! Also, they could make their menu a bit easier to read. It is very dark in the restaurant and the type and font on the menu make it nearly impossible to read."

  • "Good but not special or spectacular food. Good but not spectacular service. When we asked the waiter about a particular wine, he didn't know anything about it, yet still tried to upsale us to the next more expensive bottle. Would definitely not come back. Money was better spent in a place like Le Bernadin."

  • "Be aware of the unplanned goodies that are complementary with every meal after you place your order. The amount of food quickly becomes overwhelming. Every pasta cooked perfectly. Loved the eggplant seafood rollatini. "

  • "The Michael Bloomberg of restaurants. Excellent, unfussy food prepared with pride, not PR. The decor and atmosphere are New York, but the spirit is Italian -- starting with the generous chunk of parmigiana and array of antipasti brought to your table before the menus. The service is professional, expert, and caring, without being personal (No "hi my name is...") or intrusive. Everything is done with quiet confidence, and when there is a problem they are eager to make it right, not to make you go away. Prices are astronomical and you're tempted to think "shouldn't something bubble or explode for this price?" But then something here evokes your inner Grace Kelly. Deserve it."

  • "Outstanding food and service. It would be better than outstanding if lights were turned up a bit...very difficult to read the menu because the lights were too dim. Many people were using their cell phone lights to help."
