Diner Reviews
  • "Food was very good and service was quite good. We arrived at 7:10 and were seated promptly. We ordered a drink and a salad and entree. The entrees didn't come until 8:35 even though they were standard menu listings. It was a busy Sat. night but this seemed a very long wait. The toilet in the ladies room didn't flush which could happen to any of us but should have been checked before the arrival of guests. I would go again, perhaps on a less busy night."

  • "Very comfortable and relaxed feel. Not stiff and stuffy like some fine dining restaurants. Lighting good, you can actually see the menu without flashlights."

  • "Quiet enough for good conversation and good food. Wait staff is very attentive without being intrusive. A great place to meet with friends."

  • "I was expecting to taste the squid ink and uni from the dish but disappointed compared to another restaurant I've been to with the same dish. I also ordered the crudo. The sauce was interesting but didn't really go well with the sashimi. I don't mind paying for a unique and excellent type of food but this was not really worth it."

  • "We took business colleagues to IlGrano . It had been a long week of business dinners so we were very happy to sit down to a quiet and surprisingly elegant dinner... First the Crudo plate, Santa Barbara Prawns, stuffed zuchinni blossoms. Dinners consisted of my whole branzino baked in a salt crust. Cannelloni stuffed with branzino, risotto, and handmade pasta with octopus ragu. And finally we had the satsuma tart with whipped cream. I hope I got that all right! the point is, it all was delicious and the service was perfection. All in all and amazing meal, our guests were very impressed and content."

  • "Just the two of us out for a romantic dinner. We were able to get a corner booth, which was very nice. Food is very good and presentation is excellent. A bit expensive, but for a special occasion, definitely worth it."

  • "A wonderful place to get away from the crowded restaurant scene with terrific and inventive food, and friendly and attentive service."

  • "Service was spotty as was the food. Salads were way too salty, soup had no flavor. Crudo was boring and some of it was good but some tasted not so fresh. Guess it's not a big seller on the menu. I wouldn't rush back. Marino's in Hollywood is far superior."

  • "I took my wife and our family to Il Grano for a birthday dinner and it surpassed even my high expectations. All the food we ordered was outstanding, but I will give a special mark to the octopus appetizer, buratta cheese with persimmons, the lobster ravioli, and the veal. But again it was all great. The chef came and greeted us and was super nice. The wine list was extensive though in particular for Italian wines (it is an Italian restaurant after all). Great and innovative desserts as well. So easy to get to--just off the 405 on Santa Monica Blvd with easy parking. Will definitely return."

  • "We've eaten here numerous times but never had such a service failure. The kitchen just didn't have it together this nite even though the food was still good. There were many complaints as two people in a group received dinner much later than companions. We saw this repeated throughout the room. A group of four waiting for a table finally left after being ignored. our gelato took 30 minutes to arrive, although the spoons and many promises came earlier. We thought perhaps they were milking the cow. Not the greatest nite at Il Grano"

  • "I chose this restaurant based on a Gayot review and would probably rate it even higher than they did. The menu was full of interesting choices and we took the August tasting menu. Each dish was excellent, both in presentation and taste. Most items were prepared in a unique (to us) way. I cannot comment on the wine list since we brought our own wine (corkage $25). The restaurant is not inexpensive and we could not afford to eat here frequently (This was a birthday dinner for my wife). However, I hate going to an expensive restaurant and being bored with the food. This was certainly not the case here."

  • "The two of us were very disappointed with our dinner. We both ordered the same dish, and had the same experience that the description of the fish item didn't add up to our knowledge of that particular fish. We have had that fish many times and this was different and not very good. In retrospect we should have told the waiter, but we were eager to leave to make a film, so did not say anything negative. Surprisingly this is usually a very good restaurant but will hesitate about going back. In addition their kitchen is very slow, even though it was early and not many table as yet occupied."

  • "Il grano is one of our favorite LA Italian restaurants. The chef Sal is almost always there and serves up creative and traditional dishes with a focus on what is freshly available. Slightly off the beaten track, it is always the place we go when we want a quiet elegant meal."

  • "I must say Il Grano never does anything but awesome. Having been to over 70 Michelin starred restaurants around the world, if I had a final meal before I died, I'd go with a tasting menu at Il Grano. The most fantastic stuff, from start to finish. Sal is a genius. More of the LA foodie community should go back, as his imaginative takes change constantly and is always a total pleasure!"

  • "Very fine Italian food with some Asian influences (e.g. the emphasis on crudo seafood). Everything is meticulously prepared and served, and the food is very flavorful but comfortable rather than challenging. The wine list is comprehensive and contains wines at all cost levels, with emphasis on Italian wines. The tasting menu provides an excellent opportunity to explore the chef's range. The staff is attentive and they do not rush you. The chef/owner comes out and greets the guests. The tables are well separated. This is one of a very few high quality restaurants in Los Angeles where it is possible to have a conversation. The tab is on the expensive side but well worth it for a meal with top-notch food and relaxed and friendly ambience."

  • "Delighted to find this attractive and very professional restaurant right in my neighborhood. The menu is interesting and unusual and the food was divine. Judging by the excellence of what we ordered (salad and pasta), we would have liked to also try many other tempting selections. We will return and do that, even though it's on the pricey side It's worth it! The service was exemplary, polished and not intrusive."

  • "We have been going here off and on for several years, and have watched the chef/owner get better each year. A recent dinner was one of the best and most creative meal we have had in Los Angeles. His touch with vegetables (many home grown) is superb, his cooking of meats of all kind (fish, fowl, etc) is excellent (nothing overdone, nothing underdone, all moist and respectful of the natural taste of good products) , and his matching of tastes is unexpected but perfectly balanced. Wine list has a good variety of wines in all price ranges. The only caveat - we had this wonderful meal on a slow weeknight. Recent Friday and Saturday meals have been very good but lacking the spark we have seen during the week. Weekend crowds?"

  • "We let Il Grano slip off of our radar...big mistake. We were delighted to see Sal and once again experience his passion for cuisine. Il Grano is a big big winner. We'll be back soon."

  • "We had the tasting menu in which each dish involved tomatoes. (The chef grows them himself) In addition to the fresh and local ingredients, every dish was beautifully balanced, and delicious. One of the best meals I've had in LA. The Waiter was charming had great knowledge of the menu, and picked a superb wine to pair with our meal. The room is a little banal. Very comfortable but a bit corporate in feel, which is ironic since the food is so personal. They could have spent less money and gotten a more interesting space, but that will not keep us away! I cant wait to go back."

  • "7 PM reservation. Drinks served . Ordered dinner 7:25. Asked for bread. 7:45 asked for bread with our starters. No one ever asked us if we wanted another drink. At 8:15 we were told that there was a problem with one of out orders. By this time everyone around us who had been seated after us had been served their dinners. We were served cold little bread rolls. The food arrived at 8:23. It was ordinary. All this time the chef has been standing in the dining room entertaining guests at another table who seem to be "special" rather than being in the kitchen making sure the guests in his restaurant were being served. They even acknowledged that the service was slow. We left upset with ourselves for not walking out before dinner."
