A word from Il Fornello on King
Located in the very heart of the entertainment District, Il FORNELLO is directly across the street from Roy Thompson Hall and just steps from both the Princes of Wales and Royal Alexander Theatre. It's the perfect spot for pre-theatre dinning and is also close to The Rogers Centre.

Diner Reviews
  • "We highly recommend Il Flornello as a pre-Opera dining experience. They are sensitive to your time requirements."

  • "We met at Il Fornello before the Sinfonia Toronto concert and the servicer was friendly funny service with a smile. We shared a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon which was nice, they had a good selection of wines. We ordered and could not believe how quick the food came to our table. There was 4 of us and two of use had pizza, one had rigatoni and the other risotto special with sea food. I had the pizza melanzane on multi grain which was wonderful lots of toppings. We all enjoyed our meals which came together and were hot. We had carrot cake for dessert with coffee and tea. It was nice we were not rushed."

  • "The location is very convenient for the theatre district but the food is very disappointing, especially the pizzas, when compared to those of Pizzeria Libretto or Queen Margherita. Very dry and no flavours ; did not taste freshly made. However the service was good."

  • "We have eaten here several times over the past many years when attending concerrts at Roy Thomson Hall. It is very convenient and the service is prompt and it used to be good food at reasonable prices. The prices are no longer in the reasonable range and the food is not up to the standard we were used to. I actually let the waiter know that, athough I had eaten my Ceasar Slad, it was a poor effort. To his crdit, he immediately deleted the charge but no restaurant should present a salad mad with limp outside romaine leaves. My main course, one of the daily specials was okay, but overpriced and my wife really enjoued her Fig Pizza. The staff were friendly and professional but it will be some time until we try it again."

  • "Thought it would be a bit more energetic, but instead it was pretty dead. Not the Toronto hot spot I'd been expecting from reviews!"

  • "We've always enjoyed the food at Il Fornello and this visit was no different. Good size portion and very tasty. Service was very slow -- maybe because it was a Monday night and they weren't aware of the concert at Roy Thomson Hall, so didn't staff up accordingly. Usually the timing is perfect for pre-theatre or pre-symphony, but tonight's meal was a bit rushed."

  • "Loved my experience however the one thing I wished were "a match" to the rest of the restaurant was the washroom. Please renovate them!"

  • "We all enjoyed our meals, ie. spicy salami pizza, linguine with seafoood, and Capri penne with chicken. Quick service ensured we were on time for the Royal Alex. Attentive service, good food, decent pricing and location make it a good choice."

  • "My husband and I really enjoy this relaxed and time alone just for the two of us. The food was delicious, the seating was perfect, the server friendly and efficient, a perfect time out from our busy life. We will be back for another date.... Hope to get the same table (108)"

  • "The food and service are always reliable - fast service and good food. The menu is varied and I like their new lunch menu - lots of choices. My grandchildren love to come here"

  • "Great dinner prior to Fashion show - good and timely."

  • "We chose this restaurant because of its proximity to the royal Alex. The food we very good although the Cesar salad I was disappointed with, as I like the salad to be cooler than it was as well the cheese I prefer not grated. The main courses were enjoyed by us both and the waiter was excellent, he had a good sense of humor as well we did not feel rushed. Our table overlooked the street so it was perfect. We would both come back and had already dine at the Ajax restaurant."

  • "There were 3 of us after the matinee show this week. Very friendly and competent staff, good food delivered nice and hot, and adequate wine choices."

  • "This was our first visit to Il Fornello and we will definitely return. We ate there prior to attending the Princess of Wales theatre. Service was excellent, our table was ready for and our waitress was most attentive. Servings were geneous and the food delicious. Overall it was a good experience and we will return when attending the theatre. Chocolate cake for dessert was delicious and ample for two to share. My only criticism, would be the patheitically small piece of vanilla ice cream for $2.00, it looked like a wedge of cheese and was quite tastless. The waitress laughed when I pointed out the small piece of ice cream. I expected a generous scoop of ice cream for $2.00. Do not waste your money on additional ice cream"

  • "Il Fornello is always popular with the pre-theatre crowd and after an absence of some years we discovered that it is still a great place to have a pleasant meal prior to the symphony or a show. The food is tasty with generous portions and the service is reliable and prompt. We will go again."

  • "The restaurant is very convenient for dinner before attending the Roy Thomson Hall or any of the theatres in the neighbourhood -- a good spot to meet for conversation over a meal with companions you are joining for a concert or show."

  • "Uniques Lives is a women's event held at Roy TH (5 events per season) - restaurants are always busy, always full of women & the ladies have to be served, billed & out the door before 7:30 pm & most reservations are for 5:45 pm onward - I have never been delayed and the food always comes hot and on time - congrats to the staff at Il"fornello on King for the swift, efficient service - always one of my 1st choices to dine, but you have to get your reservation in on time for the Unique Lives evenings - popular spot!"

  • "We tried this restaurant before going to the theater and it was a good choice. It is very close to the Royal Alex Theatre; about a 2 minute walk. Food was great, service was fast and the waiter was terrific."

  • "Felt like we were back in Murano, Italy having lunch!"

  • "Given that there were 5 of us, we sampled a little of everything on the menu. The salads were great as was the pizza with the fresh figs. Seafood linguine was very well done and the artic char was excellent. The carrot cake dessert was also superb. We'll be back."

  • "GREAT ATMOSPHERE; GREAT FOOD; GREAT SERVICE. IT WAS OUR FORTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER"

  • "We have slipped in here several times this season before the theatre. We have always been seated even though the restaurant gets extremely busy, and we have made reservations to ensure seating after we saw how busy it is. The manager, wait staff and cooks are all super friendly and service oriented. The food is served super fast, always as ordered and has a casual standard upscale presentation. Put this one down as a favorite or great standby when in a hurry."

  • "I ordered the Penne Capri and found it extremely bland. The pasta was floating in a watery sauce, the chicken had obviously just been added and was tasteless and dry. The few tomatoes , mushrooms and spinach leaves added nothing to the meal. The cheese, whilst being tasty, wasn't enough to improve this dish in any way."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "The 4 people in our group all chose different dishes from the menu, and all were delicious. We arrived just after theatre diners had left, so restaurant was very quiet and great for conversation. We will definitely return again. The waiter did try to up-sale us on wine and appetizers. Definitely check the prices of any suggestions!!!"

  • "Limited menu, but attentive service. A handy place to go (with reservations) on theatre or Roy Thompson Hall events. Convenience is the primary attraction."

  • "We are both vegetarian and found a reasonable selection,"

  • "We needed a restaurant offering gluten free options close to the Princess Alexandria theatre. The waitress told us which items (there was a good selection of main courses) were GF and was very helpful. It was more difficult for me (I'm vegan) to find anything to eat, but I was happy with a salad (leaving out the goat cheese) and spaghettini with tomato sauce and olives. One diner ordered lamb, but when it arrived it was barely warm and was sent back. The second attempt was piping hot and enjoyed. The dining room is fairly cramped and quite noisy, but the restaurant was well-placed near the theatre so overall we were happy with our choice."

  • "went here for a pre-TSO dinner. Great location for theatre and roy thomson hall, and had nice atmosphere and decor. Food was quite good for the price and location. Service was mediocre, but that could be due to the fact that we weren't drinking (us water only people seem almost universally disliked by wait staff, but some still provide great service). overall its a good place to eat if you have an evening planned in the entertainment district; reasonably priced, good food, decent service, excellent location. make sure you have a reservation, it got quite crowded even on a winter weeknight."

  • "In order to accommodate, tables were placed in areas they should not have been. I was nudged several times by people passing, and at one point was struck by the tray of dirty dishes being carried by the bus boy."

  • "Great food, fast service and excellent location make this a favourite place to grab a quick pre-theatre bite. Love the fact that the menu retains the delicious standbys like arugula salad with pear and gorgonzola. The grilled calamari was to die for. Great value!"
