Diner Reviews
  • "The food was exceptional, the service was amazing, and the environment classy."

  • "Our server made our lunch very enjoyable. She was very professional, not pushy, not intrusive but kept our table clean and our glasses full. We will be returning when we can."

  • "I've been to Il Fornaio in multiple cities many times, but this is my first visit as a solo diner. The service was fantastic--left me alone when I was absorbed in something, was there whenever I needed it without hovering, etc. Additionally, I had a rather late seating time, yet I was never rushed or made to feel as if I needed to get out early. My only disappointment is that the melanzane was no longer on the menu--how I missed the eggplant pasta! Highly recommended."

  • "We enjoyed finding Il Fornaio in the Seattle restaurant week. We met my son and his wife there for dinner and really enjoyed the view from the table. The Italian food was very authentic and nicely presented. the chef was fun to watch as he prepared each plate! We went for the Puglia taste and it was great. we will do this again!"

  • "Thank you to Emily at your restaurant for always doing such a great job making us feel extra special. The food was great, the table location was great and so was the service. thank you! We will be back."

  • "Great family dinner before a show. Server was helpful and kept us on schedule. Everyone enjoyed their food choice, especially the kids. With valet parking in building it was an easy stroll to the theater."

  • "I am from the southwest. We put salsa on most everything. I once had breakfast burritos in Canada, the salsa was bland, Canadian salsa is really catsup. The red sauce at Il Fornaio is like Canadian salsa, bland. I prefer a tangy red sauce; a good tomato and spice blend. A sauce where one asks for an additional side cup of sauce. You will not find this at Il Fornaio. You will find catsup. If you go, get food with white sauce. And what ever happened to warm bread? The price of the lasagna was double what it is at other fine establishments. I recommend you have a glass of wine, go shopping and then find another place for dinner."

  • "Went to this restaurant because of close locale to movie we went to see. Wine was good--food left much to be desired. Canaloni was drowned in some kind of thick cream sauce--reminded me of some cheap gravy mix--and seemed to be wraps of some sort with chicken paste instead of the real thing in it. The wait person was a bit neglectful--the whole experience seemed a bit over rated and over priced."

  • "It is always a pleasure to dine at this lovely restaurant. I highly recommend them for their delicious food, attentive and friendly service, pleasant ambience, and one of the best tiramisu desserts in Seattle!"

  • "Sorry to saw that we waited 45 minutes and when the food arrived it was only luke warm. Unfortunately, it was a client lunch."

  • "If you are craving a fine Italian meal with many menu options as well as top notch service, look no further. Il Fornaio is a classy restaurant with knowledgable staff and excellent seating. My dinner companions had never been here before, now they want to return. Make a reservation soon. You won't regret it."

  • "We took my fiancé's parents to eat Saturday night after the Lion King at the Paramount and they were impressed. They enjoyed their entrees but really loved the dessert sampler plate. They are still raving about it. Thanks,"

  • "We came down to Seattle for the weekend. One of our party isn't a strong fan of seafood, so we decided upon Italian. However, being a last minute reservation, we were limited to options available to us. While recommendations for the Pink Door were offered by friends, we found Il Fornaio a really nice alternative. We especially love the selection of primis and secondis. We ordered three pasta dishes and one short rib entree. They were generous in portion, and the presentation and flavours were brilliant. The service was very good with a coordinated effort among the serving staff and the busing staff. We saw the Matre'd do table checks. The pace of service was fine, but don't be in rush. All in all, excellent."

  • "This is a good stop before going to the theater. If you let them know you are going they will give you a 10% discount and excellent service to get you to the show on time. With offerings from pizza and vegetarian raviolis to heavier Italian meat dishes this restaurant is a good choice."

  • "Unless you have a lot of time to spare, don't go. We an early reservation, didn't order a lot, & yet 2 hours & 10 minutes later, we finally walk out the door. To start off our evening, they were out of the wine we ordered. While the descriptions on the menu made the food sound amazing, it was mediocre at best. Both the chicken & pasta were on the dry side. I only received half of my dessert. Although they tried to rectify it, the damage was already done. They apologized & removed the item from our bill. Our server was flaky: check on your guests more frequently, learn to pronounce & describe the food correctly, if someone tells you they have a food allergy, don't ask if they want the potential allergen "on the side"."

  • "Nice ambiance, good food overall. My wife and son enjoyed their entrees. My ravioli was OK…wish the server had talked me out of it. Wine and dessert were excellent. Nice energy despite more mature clientele. Hostesses were gracious, re-seating us by the window at our request. Server did his best, but a little more warmth would have served him well."

  • "We were heading to a play and one late arriving dinner guest -- but our waiter still managed to get us all of our food quickly so we were able to boot scoot over to 5th Ave Theatre! Grazie!"

  • "We go out a lot and we always seem to gravitate toward Il Fornaio whenever we want a quality Italian dinner. It never disappoints and is always tops. The home made paper-thin, LIGHT lasagna is divine -- and I am not a lasagna person. I don't even need the menu. The black rice cake appetizer is DELICIOUS; it's really misnamed -- it's really a risotto cake in a heavenly tomato-based sauce. Salads are good and we top it off with a Affagato dessert, espresso poured over two scoops of gelato!"

  • "I ordered the Insalata del Fornaio with balsmic vinagrette. The vinagrete was thick, to heavy and had a bitter taste. I also ordered the ravioli with salmon and mascapone cheeses that was supposed to be in a dill sauce, but it wasn't. The sauce was more of a creamy tomato and lacked any distinctive taste. The pasta was undercooked so it was chewey. I've been to much better Italian resauarants in Seattle. I do not recommend this place."

  • "We went with the monthly special from a specific Italian region and didn't like the soup / salad very much and the pasta was very little. The main course (lamb) was good, but not the best we've ever had. We did have much better meals here before, so I guess it was a bad choice of dishes for us this time."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The food here was just so so. It's too bad because there were hardly any people at the restaurant, even though it was lunch in the heart of downtown Seattle, so you' think more care would be taken witht he food. I had the special, which included sausaage, but you'd think they had used leftovers from the day before, it was dried out and overcooked. Our server was quite nice and attentive, so that was nice. I don't plan on going back, which is too bad because it's such a good location."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Although the hostess was very kind in still seating us after we were late for our reservation, the server seemed tired and bored with her job. The food was not bad but not good enough for a second go."

  • "Wow.... what a bummer. I have walked past this restaurant several times and finally had the chance to dine there last night. The food was pretty good, but very bad service. Would have liked to try some dessert and after dinner drinks, but none were offered. After we received our meal, we didn't see any wait staff until the waiter came over and asked if we wanted the check. He never asked if we wanted another drink, coffee or anything to compliment our meal. Our water was filled once only because I flagged someone down when our glasses where empty. We left and went somewhere else to finish out celebration with dessert and drinks."

  • "I have been eating at this chain of restaurants for about 20 years. The food is consistently creative Italian cuisine and the menu always diverse and changing. Service is superb and the ambiance of each restaurant somewhat different. They always have an excellent wine list. I am a lover of bread and their breads are always special. The prices are always slightly on the high side but consistent with their locations such as Seattle downtown and the San Francisco embarcadero."

  • "My husband and I are on a tour of Italian restaurants throughout this year. This is pur second place. He rated it at 3.75 stars. He had lasagna and said it could use more flavor and cheese. But overall pretty good. I went with the waitress' recommendation of the 1/2 chicken, potatoes and vegetables. It was very tender and flavorful. ..but next time I will go with something pasta. We had the apple cramped and ice cream for dessert. Really good! We had a beautiful view of the Space Needle too. Very romantic :0)"

  • "I recommend avoiding Il Fornaio on Valentine's Day - or any holiday for that matter. With reservations made well in advance, how disappointing it was to find ourselves at a table placed very awkwardly in an aisle, (so as to obviously capitalize on floor space) where the wait staff and guests alike were either bumping into our chairs, or having to walk out of their way to get around us. Although our filets were excellent, by 6:30 P.M. the kitchen had already run out of all but cooked spinach for side vegetables! I asked for something else and after 15 minutes received a plate of plain, cold asparagus. The waiter was as accommodating as he could be. Alas, that wasn't enough to make up for the lack of "special" on our special night."

  • "Made reservations for Valentines Day after much research about Seattle restaurants. Their current special was a menu based on the region of Umbria in Italy.... We decided to order the 3 course menu which included a 1/2 size appetizer, 1/2 size pasta and full size entree. Every course delivered was incredibly bland and required salt to even be palatable. It was incredibly disappointing for a menu that described black truffles, hand formed gnocchi and other such items. I won't be dining here again."

  • "We were treated royally with excellent yet discreet service throughout the evening. The gnocchi was outstanding as well as the ravioli. Loved the casual atmosphere and were able to enjoy table conversation while tasting and being served by the excellent wait staff,"

  • "Having a gluten allergy limits our options, so we're always thankful for GF options. Having eaten at Il Fornaio before being diagnosed with a gluten allergy, we were excited to go back for their GF pastas. The food was great, but for just two of us, we were there for 2 hours. Not being in a hurry it wasn't that big of a deal for us, but it was a noticeable. It isn't the norm from past experiences."

  • "I have found this restaurant to always be great. This is one of my favorites in the area. My sister and I go to the 5th Ave and try to rotate restaurants so that we can utilize the many choices we have. This is truly one of our favorites. The wine list is good, the food delicious and desserts are fabulous! Plus it is a beautiful restaurant."

  • "Food was OK but did not measure up to the setting and ambience for a romantic evening. Making advanced reservation online was great, but I was disappointed by the 20-30 minute wait past reservation time. Excellent restaurants can be at their best when very busy, but no for Il Fornaio. Why do I say this. Because I can make the comparison for this restaurant being there on many occasions when it was slow and when it was busy. I give a good recommendation for Il Fornaio with the caveat that you attend in off hours, or you will be disappointed. Johnny the Amateur Restaurant Critic"

  • "We had a 7pm reservation & arrived at 6:45. We were told our table was being cleared & would be available shortly. 15 minutes later the hostess advised it would be a few minutes more & asked us to move to the bar area to clear the lobby. We waiting at a bar table for 20 more minutes before we were seated & then we were seated at the worse table. I asked the hostess if she could possibly move us as this was a birthday celebration for my husband who is recovering from open heart surgery & we wanted to make the evening memorable (which I noted in my online reservation request). She was not able to move us without another long wait. The wait staff was good and the food arrived timely. However, I will not be going back for a long time."

  • "I had the rotisserie duck and it was very, very tasty. Great crispy skin and really good sides. We also had calamari for an appetizer and it was about the best we ever had. The service was very attentive and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a nice evening with superior food and service."
