  • "We went to El Fornaio prior to the Ringo Starr concert. Perfection - as our group was quite hungry and the waiter accommodated all our needs. I asked for a piece of cake for our birthday guest and they made sure we got it before departing for the show. Thank you for that! Made the evening quite special. Food was so good, wish we had more time, but we had to dash! :) We will come back again. Aces staff and servers. Overall I will give the restaurant a 10 out of 10."

  • "Il Fornaio in San Jose is in an old building reminiscent of the 1930s, with wood and marble dividers and paneling - and they have modernized aspects of it as well to keep it up-to-date and fresh looking. It's the same good food, wonderful bread, good Italian wines, and comfortable atmosphere as other Il Fornaio restaurants - a sure thing. We greatly enjoyed our dinner--the spumoni ice cream for dessert is a must. We ordered several of the Veneto regional specialties dishes and received a jar of sea salt mix as a gift, very nice and a surprise; also a little "passport" to be stamped each time we take part in one of the regional offers (each month), and there is a raffle at completion for a trip to Italy."

I reserved a table for 15 for my post graduation lunch and the table was ready with a zero wait time. It was quiet in the restaurant and no one in my party had to wave a waiter down; the service was impeccable."

We had sat in traffic for 2 hours giving us a very short time for dinner...again accomodation was responsive and done with grace. We had two handicapped women in the party and they were treated just like everyone else. Thank you for a pleasant meal with you."

  • "A few years ago I stopped going to Il Fornaio because I had repeated experiences of mediocre service and disappointing entrees. I went back this time only because of a request from my guest. While our waiter was very attentive without being overly obtrusive and was very professional and while the food was an improvement over my past experiences, overall the dining experience was somewhat disappointing. The lasagna was watery, the spinach was tough (overcooked?) and it took over an hour for us to be served our entrees despite the restaurant being almost empty during the entire time we were there (arrived 6:15 PM and the entrees were served around 7:25 PM). We had a 8 PM theater engagement so we had 15 minutes to eat our entrees."

  • "My water cup stayyed empty for a very long time. Took forever to get me my crushed red pepper that I asked for. After payying the bill, they took forever to collect my money. I needed change. Another waiter had to come pick it up and do his transaction for the original waiter. Food was great!"

  • "3 generations of my family gathered at San Jose Il Fornaio for my mom's 84th birthday. The small dinner party was a great success, as usual. We have been going there for the past 15 years to celebrate graduations, birthdays and other special occasions and we are never disappointed. The service was excellent, our food was delicious, and the special birthday song from the manager was an added bonus! My favorite dish is the fresh pasta butternut squash ravioli with crystallized sage leaves. It is a place where you can dress up or casually and either way you can fit right in. It's our family's "happy place"!"

  • "I've been to Il Fornaio restaurants many times and generally had a good standard of food, but the "veal" daily special yesterday was dreadful. First off, it wasn't veal, but pork tenderloin. It wasn't prepared as advertised (no nuts, sultanas etc) and the artichoke was sliced raw, uncooked leaves and all, and inedible."

  • "Il Forniao never disappoints. Went with 3 others and we had an extremely pleasant and relaxed dining experience. If you are looking for the typical veal parm with a heavy red sauce, this isn't the place. Each entire was delicious and beautifully plated. The wait staff was a great help in making choices with a menu in which you want to order two or three entrees just to try them out. I chose their taste of Sicily menu that feature a delightful veal meatball and pasta appetizer and the lamb chop entree. A terrific meal. I come to San Jose several time each year - each time I have at least one meal at Il Fornaio."

My chicken arrived and was tasty, but husband's sea bass was overdone, with black char marks. The waiter asked how the food was, and they did rectify the situation. Previous meals have been great, so I guess it was just an off night."

  • "I chose Il Fornaio for a business dinner with a new client. The food was good, the service crisp and not distracting, and prices acceptable for quality food. Having recently moved to Colorado, the absence of a complete beer menu struck me, but the choices were sufficient. I used the valet parking which was a bit on the expensive side but nice to have since parking in the area is a puzzler for people not familiar with San Jose."

  • "San Jose's civic fathers had the good sense to situate their convention center in an area rife with food outlets, and event attendees are now spoiled for choice. If you want fine Italian, the best bet I know is to simply cross the street to Il Fornaio, a "chain" that, like certain other establishments such as Mortons, defies the stigma and delivers a distinctive, genuine experience at each restaurant. I especially value the fact that they take care to stock a good selection of *big* Italian wines by the glass, not just more interchangeable chiantis. Go for the amazing food and great staff, and stay for dessert."

  • "This is a great place to eat before a play at San Jose Repertory Theatre, not only because the food is good and it's close to the Rep, but also because the staff takes great pains to move service along to match your schedule, getting finished in good time to stroll over the the theatre. As a side note, the current play, The Big Meal, is well worth seeing!"

  • "This was not my first time eating at Il Fornaio, but was still a wonderful experience. The menu features a nice mix of dishes with many of the classics one would expect at any Italian restaurant, but also features many tasty dishes that aren't so common. The chicken was amazingly tender, the canneloni came out piping hot, and the seafood pasta tasted fresh and was by no means "fishy". Everything was delicious and the wait staff was professional and kind. Never had a bad experience here and will be back again for sure. "

  • "My group attends an event once a month in the downtown area and we found your restaurant very accomidating as we use to go to the restaurant directly in front of yours but could not make reservations. We enjoying meeting in the bar for a drink first and then being seated at our requested reserved table by a window. We are never rushed and have had great service and your menu is varied and liked by all. It is now our go to place for all of our downtown events! Thanks for such great food and service!"
