Diner Reviews
  • "A great place to eat Italian with regional menus. Food is tasty and a selection great selection of wine."

  • "I like this restaurant (chain) but the service was very slow that night. May because one big group was there. A bit noisy, too. Except for these issues, this restaurant is good. I like Il Fornaio restaurant in other locations especially in Burlingame, Palo Alto and Del Mar."

  • "Always love Il Fornaio! First time at this one & didn't disappoint in terms of food, service & ambiance."

  • "we had one more person than we had made reservations for. Accomodation was quick and friendly. We had sat in traffic for 2 hours giving us a very short time for dinner...again accomodation was responsive and done with grace. We had two handicapped women in the party and they were treated just like everyone else. Thank you for a pleasant meal with you."

  • "A few years ago I stopped going to Il Fornaio because I had repeated experiences of mediocre service and disappointing entrees. I went back this time only because of a request from my guest. While our waiter was very attentive without being overly obtrusive and was very professional and while the food was an improvement over my past experiences, overall the dining experience was somewhat disappointing. The lasagna was watery, the spinach was tough (overcooked?) and it took over an hour for us to be served our entrees despite the restaurant being almost empty during the entire time we were there (arrived 6:15 PM and the entrees were served around 7:25 PM). We had a 8 PM theater engagement so we had 15 minutes to eat our entrees."

  • "I ordered an ahi tuna salad. Way over dressed with garlic. Nice portion of tuna."

  • "Love this restaurant! Especially for special occasions/celebrations. Food is excellent! Service is usually superb. Would have been nice if the special risotto could have been made w/o wine in it... so it could be ordered for those who cannot have wine in their diet (even if it's cooked in the sauce)."

  • "Popular place to eat before a concert. However, it seemed a bit unorganized when they brought out the salad late and the entree before we finished our salad. We were pleased with the food and the help in getting us to the concert on time; however, it could have run a little more smoothly. We had plenty of time before the start of the concert."

  • "My water cup stayyed empty for a very long time. Took forever to get me my crushed red pepper that I asked for. After payying the bill, they took forever to collect my money. I needed change. Another waiter had to come pick it up and do his transaction for the original waiter. Food was great!"

  • "The service was extremely slow and reminded me why we hadn't been in over 10 years. We won't be going back. If you like good food but want to wait for > 3 hours for only a 3 course meal, you should dine here."

  • "Good food and very friendly attentive service. Participation in hte Dine Out San Jose fixed price menus program is a plus this week."

  • "3 generations of my family gathered at San Jose Il Fornaio for my mom's 84th birthday. The small dinner party was a great success, as usual. We have been going there for the past 15 years to celebrate graduations, birthdays and other special occasions and we are never disappointed. The service was excellent, our food was delicious, and the special birthday song from the manager was an added bonus! My favorite dish is the fresh pasta butternut squash ravioli with crystallized sage leaves. It is a place where you can dress up or casually and either way you can fit right in. It's our family's "happy place"!"

  • "For a restaurant located within walking distance of a convention center, I expected that they would be used to and able to accommodate the usual lunch crowd from a convention. i was pleased to easily and quickly be seated but the service from there was slow. The food is delicious and the selections are great."

  • "They lost our reservations after calling to change the time. With 6 of us dining, my meal of rotisserie chicken went back as it was too dry and the next one was no better. The two who ordered pizza had the best meal. Service was slow. Overall - OK but not great."

  • "I've been to Il Fornaio restaurants many times and generally had a good standard of food, but the "veal" daily special yesterday was dreadful. First off, it wasn't veal, but pork tenderloin. It wasn't prepared as advertised (no nuts, sultanas etc) and the artichoke was sliced raw, uncooked leaves and all, and inedible."

  • "Because one server called in ill, our service was spotty. We had to wait at least 20 minutes for breakfast after ordering, however, our server kept us well filled with coffee. Breakfast, when it was served, was served somewhat cold. We were disappointed."

  • "A special occasion seems to bring us to Il Fornaio but it is a wonderful all the time menu. I love the ambience and old world charm. Food is continually excellent. Staff is right on. Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "San Jose's civic fathers had the good sense to situate their convention center in an area rife with food outlets, and event attendees are now spoiled for choice. If you want fine Italian, the best bet I know is to simply cross the street to Il Fornaio, a "chain" that, like certain other establishments such as Mortons, defies the stigma and delivers a distinctive, genuine experience at each restaurant. I especially value the fact that they take care to stock a good selection of *big* Italian wines by the glass, not just more interchangeable chiantis. Go for the amazing food and great staff, and stay for dessert."

  • "I visit Il Fornaio each month to enjoy something off of their Regional Menu which features menu items from a different region of Italy rotating each month. I have to say, for my taste, Sicily's menu is one of my favorite regions. You can never go wrong ordering the regional risotto."

  • "Il Forniao never disappoints. Went with 3 others and we had an extremely pleasant and relaxed dining experience. If you are looking for the typical veal parm with a heavy red sauce, this isn't the place. Each entire was delicious and beautifully plated. The wait staff was a great help in making choices with a menu in which you want to order two or three entrees just to try them out. I chose their taste of Sicily menu that feature a delightful veal meatball and pasta appetizer and the lamb chop entree. A terrific meal. I come to San Jose several time each year - each time I have at least one meal at Il Fornaio."

  • "My mixed green salad arrived with many of the lettuce pieces showing oxidation. I don't serve that at home. My chicken arrived and was tasty, but husband's sea bass was overdone, with black char marks. The waiter asked how the food was, and they did rectify the situation. Previous meals have been great, so I guess it was just an off night."

  • "great food, great service, an overall wonderful experience."

  • "The service was outstanding. The waiter was cordial, helpful with the menu and very attentive. The food however was just okay. After all of the reviews, I expected much better quality. The mixed seafood grill was overcooked. The lasagna was quite dry."

  • "I chose Il Fornaio for a business dinner with a new client. The food was good, the service crisp and not distracting, and prices acceptable for quality food. Having recently moved to Colorado, the absence of a complete beer menu struck me, but the choices were sufficient. I used the valet parking which was a bit on the expensive side but nice to have since parking in the area is a puzzler for people not familiar with San Jose."

  • "Love the Old European feel of Il Fornaio in San Jose. The food was good, and plentiful.... not cheap, but you get what you pay for... "

  • "This is a great place to eat before a play at San Jose Repertory Theatre, not only because the food is good and it's close to the Rep, but also because the staff takes great pains to move service along to match your schedule, getting finished in good time to stroll over the the theatre. As a side note, the current play, The Big Meal, is well worth seeing!"

  • "This was not my first time eating at Il Fornaio, but was still a wonderful experience. The menu features a nice mix of dishes with many of the classics one would expect at any Italian restaurant, but also features many tasty dishes that aren't so common. The chicken was amazingly tender, the canneloni came out piping hot, and the seafood pasta tasted fresh and was by no means "fishy". Everything was delicious and the wait staff was professional and kind. Never had a bad experience here and will be back again for sure. "

  • "We arrived 1 hour early with a group of 8 and they were able to seat us early. This was great! It made our special occasion even better. Great job!"

  • "My group attends an event once a month in the downtown area and we found your restaurant very accomidating as we use to go to the restaurant directly in front of yours but could not make reservations. We enjoying meeting in the bar for a drink first and then being seated at our requested reserved table by a window. We are never rushed and have had great service and your menu is varied and liked by all. It is now our go to place for all of our downtown events! Thanks for such great food and service!"

  • "Vegetable pizza and spinach salad were perfect. Husband enjoyed the sea bass."

  • "I have previously enjoyed terrific service and food. The last experience with the tasting menu was overcooked food and lax service. I will not consider this restaurant again before opera/theater in the future. The only wait person that seemed to care about us was the busboy."

  • "Love this place! We often meet for dinner here with groups when conventions are in town. The private rooms are great for an extra special touch when out with friends. Good service, and good food make it our go-to place in San Jose."

  • "Great location, especially if attending an event at the convention center. And great decor and ambience. But for the price, the lunch Rissotto was unforgettable. I'd dine here again only when at an event nearby. I wouldn't seek it out. "

  • "I find the food here is consistently delicious and well prepared."

  • "We enjoyed our Mother's Day meal at Il Forniao, indulging in the tasting menu and wine flight. My only suggestion would be to serve LESS for the final dish. I expect "tastes" of each thing, but the third plate was huge. I simply couldn't finish. The food was very nice. The wine flights weren't spectacular, but we enjoyed them. Our server was nice and seemed to deal with our wacky sense of humor. "

  • "We took our beloved matriarch to Il Fornaio for Mother's Day Dinner. The food and service were quite good as usual. They always do a nice job, especially on special occasions. "

  • "Roast Beef: dry / Roast Pork: super salty / Lasagna: gummy & tasteless / Chicken Marsala: fair / Potatoes: bland. Mother had the crab legs which she loved. Everything else was pretty awful and the service was non-existent."

  • "This was my third Mother's Day brunch at Il Fornaio and my last. The food is usually over cooked unless prepared in front of you like omelets. No waiter asked if we wanted something to drink and when we asked for water and coffee, it took over 10 minutes. We were almost done with the meal at this time. This was also at the slow time as it wasn't even half full. Don't pay the big $$ for a low budget meal and experience. "

  • "The quality of the main dishes for Mother's Day brunch was subpar for Il Fornaio and not quite worth the price this year (we've been going for almost a decade). The salmon was dry, the lasagna did not taste good at all. Even the pancakes and eggs were at motel buffet standards, though my guests said the waffles were delicious. For the price ($45/person) at Il Fornaio I expect quality food; I can go to a cheaper place if I just want all you can eat food without quality. That said, service was SPECTACULAR this year, we drank our share of mimosas, and the change in dessert bar was appreciated - everything was beyond delicious in that category. We will still return next year."
