  • "We scheduled a team dinner at the restaurant and had a private room which was very nice. Our waiter was knowledgable about the wine list and the service was very good. The meal, including the desserts were great. If you are in the area, stop in."

  • "We have eaten at several Il Fornaio restaurants in the past, including Walnut Creek, San Jose and Pasadena. We used to think they were quite good, but the last few times we have gone, we were disappointed. The food is not early as tasty and fresh. I don' know if they have new owners or management, but something has changed. It's not bad, but for the price that they charge, there are better restaurants around. The bread, however, remains as delicious as before."

  • "Food was very, very good. Service was good but could have been better, especially in a place like this. Restaurant is gorgeous and very impressive."

  • "Delicious selections on the Pugliese regional menu! I especially enjoyed the burrata, penne with meatballs and seafood grigliata. An abundance of food! Being of barese roots, it was a real treat to have authentic dishes of Le Puglie! Bravissimi!"

  • "Wow, you need to figure out how to handle crowds First the hostess was not able to get people seated, appeared to be an Opentable issue. Then we were seated and a waiter never showed up, after 20 minutes the busboy and another waiter took pity on us and hit us some food, the chicken was over cooked and dry. The veggies were great."

  • "We had a wonderful experience recently at Il Fornaio. We went with a group of 9 before seeing Hilary Clinton speak at the Event Center. Being we had reservations in advance they offered us one of the large private rooms for free. The reservation changed to a party of 6 about 2 hours before our reserved time. I called the restaurant and even though they where packed, because of Hilary, they still gave us the large room for our party of 6. They did everything possible to accommodate us. The food at the restaurant was excellent. Everyone loved their dishes. I had a Italian fish special with a variety of fresh fish that was outstanding. Will be return? You bet. Thank you Il Fornaio for taking care of a large party on a busy night."

  • "I would recommend a reservation if you want to be seated quickly. My dinner was excellent. I had the lamb. The salad I would rate just ok. My house wine was good and went well with my dinner."

  • "Food was not the greatest. Meat was not removed well from the chicken. It was full of pieces of bone and gristle. Service was not the greatest, one of the guests ordered coffee but was brought coke instead. The oil and balsamic vinegar was on the saucer to stare at for the longest time. Others who were seated way after us all had their breads but our bread came at the same time as the appetizers. Took a long time for the bill to be brought in spite of being informed that we had a 1 p.m. appointment to dash to. Not a very good experience. wine by the glass were way way way more than buying by the bottle."

  • "It took 3 hours for a party of 6 to order entrees and desert."

  • "Il Fornaio in San Jose has been one of my go to spots for several years. We ate there twice last weekend. The first time, Friday night, was great in every respect. Sunday night was a different story. Our server was inattentive , patronizing, and basically, just not there. We waited without water for about ten minutes before someone came to the table, another five minutes before anyone took our order and another 15 minutes before our drinks or soup came. Our entrees arrived nearly an hour after we entered the restaurant, that entire time, our server checked only once with us and never apologized for the wait until it was clear we we were angry and his tip was in jeopardy."

  • "Food was good, service was good, wine was really good. Nothing special about it, being a full blooded Italian. It was enjoyable. A little pricey but the location is good for seeing a play or concert. That is worth a little something on it's own. Our table was ready on time as promised."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "Food was good as it usually is. It was quite crowded at 6:15pm, and got even busier until about 7:50, then it pretty much all cleared out. Definitely a spot for pre-concerts or pre-games, both of which were going on in downtown San Jose that night."

  • "Great food prepared beyond ordinary to Excellent The Sole prepared on the flat top was exquisite. Salmon with a crust and flaky and moist also Superlative. Thankyou."

  • "Had a delicious dinner sunday with a friend. Food was great.. unfortunately, the bar service was lacking...ordered chianti in an Italian restaurant, which was good when it finally came -- at the end of the meal."

  • "We were here before a concert and by the time we left the place was full. The noise level had grown considerably since we first arrived. The service was very good and the food delicious. Only problem was after asking to see the dessert menu we were brought our check instead. Since we had time we just walked over to Bijan Bakery & Cafe and had espresso and dessert."

  • "The chicken on their regional menu turned out to be skinless, dry, rubbery. Wait staff consistently forgets who ordered what. This place has gone way down hill."

  • "We always enjoy wonderful food, Our server consistently suggests great dishes and we are never disappointed."

  • "The overall experience was great. Delicious food, server was attentive. We went at 6 and it was pretty busy, the food took a long time but the ambiance was nice so it wasn't a big deal. The only negative thing I have to say is the girl working front of the house was very rude. Once you leave the front and are seated though, service is great."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "The food was decent but not inspired. The waiter did what he was supposed to do, but not with a smile or anything extra. Overall service was a little slow. However for five people the tab reasonable for a nice dinner."

  • "Wine and entree selections are lovely. There is a regional menu selection also, this is a nice option. Service was attentive to our group of 10. Restaurant is elegant cozy."

  • "I always enjoy Il Fornaio in San Jose not only for the great food, ambience and service, but because I can always find something without gluten that is still delicious and satisfying. This time I noticed they offered gluten free pasta and I tried it with their bolognese sauce. It was heaven and the first time I had been able to eat pasta in a restaurant since discovering my gluten intolerance six years ago."

  • "Il Fornaio is a perfect place for dinner as a couple or a group. The food is exceptional and they offer a variety of Italian specialties as well as their regional specials."

  • "Tip: If you're there during Happy Hour, go to the bar first to get the happy hour prices, even if you have reservations for a table. We were surprised that the Happy Hour prices on wine were not valid in the restaurant. Now we know. As usual, the food was good, and our table tried a good variety - the sea bass, the butternut squash ravioli and the special beef dish. Unfortunately, our meals were uniformly lukewarm or even cold. The restaurant was busy, as it was before the theater, but we were there in plenty of time. It was obvious that our food had been ready for awhile (it did take too long after we ordered), but by then it was too late to ask them to heat it up. Disappointing for an otherwise very good restaurant."

  • "We came here before an event downtown. Great start to the evening. The atmosphere feels special--in a way that white tablecloths bring about! Our food was beautifully prepared and presented. Highly recommend!"

  • "We just happened to dine at Il Fornaio, San Jose, the night after we dined at Il Fornaio, Del Mar. We were staying at the St. Clare Hotel (beautiful old hotel) in downtown SJ & Il Fornaio is inside this hotel. Our dinner - service and food quality- were far superior at Il Fornaio, Del Mar! Our waitress in Del Mar was wonderful, where our waiter in San Jose was absent most of the time.... Pappardelle Gialle ai Funghi was to die for at the Del Mar location & painfully lacking at the San Jose location. I even took some Carmel Sea Salt Gelato from the San Jose location back to our room only to find out that 1/3 of it was a huge chunk of ice! The only dish that seemed on the par at the two locations was the Rustichella - and it was very good!!"

  • "Very nice dinner, but not outstanding. The salmon entrée was perfectly prepared. The filet of sole entrée was pretty good, but swimming in oil, and the sautéed spinach was overdone and bitter. The veal scallopine limon had delicious flavor, but the artichoke hearts on the top were too tough to chew. However, the desserts were outstanding. The tiramisu is THE BEST we've had anywhere--not too sweet. The chocolate mousse with raspberries was wonderful. The apple crepe with vanilla gelato was also very nice. Our server was new on the job, but did great--very personable and friendly, even though he admitted it was his first night. Not perfect, but very enjoyable, nonetheless."

  • "I think the quality of Il Fornaio's food has gone down but the prices have not - haven't been there for a while. I had the sole special - it was way to greasy and the sauteed spinach they served with it was cold. My husband's seafood risotto was very bland. Service was excellent, however."

  • "We didn't have a good experience at this restaurant on a quiet Sunday morning. We were only the second group to be seated in the restaurant. For our group of 5 people, when our food arrived, 3 of the orders were incorrect. 2 were brought out and were correct, and the 3rd order had to brought out 2 more times before it was correct. The waiter argued with me about what I had ordered when it was returned the 2nd time. The food wasn't hot, and the coffee was hot either."

  • "Dined her prior to going to the theatre. Once our waiter realised we were in a rush - he had our bill to us extra quickly it seemed and took care of us right away! Very polite and attentive - we had a great meal!"

  • "We went for our anniversary and ended up getting some free, delicious tiramisu. Everything we ordered was Absolutely great. The servers were attentive and overall the bill wasn't too shabby."

  • "Il Fornaio rarely disappoints. Roasted chicken, seafood risotto, cannelloni were all excellent. The special fennel salad that evening was wonderful. We had opera tickets as well and our waiter was very attentive to our timing needs. Great experience."

  • "We attended before the opera. The waiter was very accommodating and got us out in plenty of time. The butternut squash raviolis and veal were delicious."
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "Very nice atmosphere. Too bad the omelet was so dry. Basically a burnt and dry eggs wrapped around bacon. Where were the onions? Not to mention everything on my plate was cold. But it was a nice surroundings, very nice."

  • "The food is outstanding; almost like being in Italy."

  • "I go to Il Fornaio several times a year, and service is always wonderful. But this time after we were seated our waitress came over twice to say she'd "be right back" before taking our order, not even our drink order. We had been sitting for exactly 25 minutes before she actually took our drink and food order. This is pretty unacceptable, especially since we are always headed for a show after dining at Il Fornaio, luckily this time we had arrived early and had the time to spare. Otherwise everything was wonderful as usual."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "The food was terrific, very hot when served and delicious. The service was terrific as well. The only negative is the lack of space in the bar area while waiting for our table. We arrived early from a show and needed to wait about 20 minutes but it was a very busy night and very little space for waiting. It was easy to forget about that once we were seated and treated so well! And the prices were very reasonable!"

  • "The back room was nice because it was quiet. we got there at 6 to be finished by 7:30 for the opera. The main course didn't arrive until 7:15. The waitress came over twice to apologize because the "kitchen" was backed. The maitre'd came and apologized and said our dinner would be here "soon". When we got our dinner:::: The duck was way overcooked, could not cut it without asking for a sharper knife and it was not good. (My husband loves duck ordinarily) I had petrale sole that was fried so hard with a "crust" so hard it was difficult to cut. I don't know if it had skin on or just fried so hard but that was not OK. The salad (house) we shared was good. This experience makes me not want to eat here again soon. Mary Wond"
