  • "We enjoy gathering at Il Fornaio as a family with folks coming from both north and south SF areas. The restaurant is comfortable. There is a broad enough selection to satisfy our vegan, vegetarian and carnivores and foodies like me in the family. The service is good as well. We will continue meeting here for our family events for sure. It is a beautiful setting and I like the feel of coming to an established San Francisco area favorite. "

  • "The food was very good, a little slow to arrive but we were a large party and it was lunch-time on a Friday. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Overall, a good dining experience. The only downside is that I notice it always seems to take a while for us to be seated, even though we made our reservation in advance. Also, the greeting staff could be friendlier/more helpful."

  • "The food was good Italian, what you'd expect from Il Fornaio. We went during the weekday lunch rush and thanks to our reservations we were seated immediately. The overall experience was fine but our waiter was overly condescending and impatient with us throughout the meal, starting from the moment we all ordered water to drink. I realize drinks are important to raise the value of his tab, and hence his tip, but I don't feel obligated to make it a valuable experience for HIM as a couple of my colleagues and I were just grabbing lunch at the closest spot to our office in the otherwise restaurant dead zone. Overall a pleasant experience that could have been much better with a courteous and enthusiastic staff."

  • "The place was empty so we figured with our large party we shouldn't have to wait long for service. They had one waiter that was very clumsy and forgetful, he didn't seem to know his way around the menu and kept telling us the kitchen isn't open yet. If the kitchen isn't open then why are we sitting down at a table??? This is my annual NY brunch with other families, so our kids were there and we had the slowest service. It was so terrible, I will have to find a new NY brunch place from now on."

  • "I've eaten at many Il Fornaios and this one on Battery Street in SF is one of the best. Betty Jane waited on us; she was attentive, accommodating, and a pleasure to have as our server. The food was excellent - Dad had the short ribs, which he thoroughly enjoyed. My husband and I both had the seafood linguine, which we enjoyed too. As a treat for Dad's birthday, Betty surprised him with complimentary candle-lit tiramisu. Dad was so full that he boxed the dessert to enjoy another time. Oh, and the bread, as always, was so wonderful, the best of the best. I think I could live on Il Fornaio bread and water :) Bonus: We had no trouble getting a last minute reservation on Saturday evening."

  • "This place looks very good for a romantic or special occasion dinner however the food was not so good. Service was excellent and the ambiance is great too but I was very disapponted with the food. I tool my fiancé for our anniversary and she didn't enjoy her entre. I had their special roasted duck and that was not worth the price is paid for. I will not be going there again."

  • "I really like Il Fornaio and have dinner there often since it's near the Bay Club. The staff is very nice to me and my little 6 yr-old. He loves the food especially the kid's sundae. I like the variety of healthy dishes and usually order the grilled seafood with the broccolini and potatoes with one of the salads. I like that it's affordable for us to come often - especially Happy Hour when you have the pizza specials."

  • "My sister visited with fond memories of this restaurant in this particular location. The menu did not have the choices that she and my mother particularly were looking for, and both were disappointed in the food they ordered as being not very tasty (this is in San Francisco, where food IS memorable). I enjoyed my dish. That was not the issue though. We had 11 AM-ish reservations on a Saturday and it was not at all busy. The waitperson brought us our bottle of wine but never offered us water or bread (unlike the few other tables). We had to ask for Parmesan cheese (it used to be grated freshly over the dish) and this finally showed up in a little bowl, looking like Kraft cheese - other tables still had theirs grated freshly."

I especially liked the chestnut pappardelle, the pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce very tasty. We sampled a couple of desserts and everyone loved the apple crepes. I always enjoy coming here, the decor and ambience are well-suited to a relaxing and enjoyable experience."

My wife and I had another lovely experience, great service and a truly wonderful fresh pasta that was part of their festa menu - "best of festa". I started with the special soup which was very hardy and perfect for this time of year. The place was very cozy and warm, lots of energy throughout. Love this place!"

  • "My alunmi and I meet annually for the holidays. There are usually 10-16 of us. This year 11 joined the annual get together. I asked that we be put in a corner so that we could have a better way to socialize. Il Fornaio was great and located us in a private room. This private room was set up in such a way that we could see each other and have one big group conversations. In years past, other restaurants would seat us in such a matter we could have a conversation with the people next us. The manager was great. He was a lot of fun and was great helping us take our group photo. Il Fonaio's food was outstanding. There was variety and the price was reasonable. We all enjoyed our meal."
