Diner Reviews
  • "Always a treat to visit Il Fornaio. The service is great, the dining room and patio are lovely and the menu is huge and there is something to tantalize everyone. The salads are amazing as are the pastas. We go back again and again."

  • "This place is a hidden gem in open sight near Embarcadero. The food was great. Wonderful small plates and small size pasta options make this a great place to dine. Top that with a wonderful wine list."

  • "The food was very good, a little slow to arrive but we were a large party and it was lunch-time on a Friday. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Overall, a good dining experience. The only downside is that I notice it always seems to take a while for us to be seated, even though we made our reservation in advance. Also, the greeting staff could be friendlier/more helpful."

  • "I hadn't been to this restaurant for quite a while and will go back again and again. Not only is the food outstanding and plentiful but the prices are great. We sat at the bar first and found the drinks were priced well below other restaurants even for call liquor."

  • "Thanks Il Fornaio San Francisco for another great experience. We dined from your Basilicata Festa menu for the first time and it was fantastic. We loved everything from the special wine from that region to the appetizers, main course and dessert. Our friends loved it too. They'll be back as well. Thanks Chef Ivan for visiting our table to discuss the menu and accommodating our dietary restrictions. Love you guys."

  • "The food was good Italian, what you'd expect from Il Fornaio. We went during the weekday lunch rush and thanks to our reservations we were seated immediately. The overall experience was fine but our waiter was overly condescending and impatient with us throughout the meal, starting from the moment we all ordered water to drink. I realize drinks are important to raise the value of his tab, and hence his tip, but I don't feel obligated to make it a valuable experience for HIM as a couple of my colleagues and I were just grabbing lunch at the closest spot to our office in the otherwise restaurant dead zone. Overall a pleasant experience that could have been much better with a courteous and enthusiastic staff."

  • "The place was empty so we figured with our large party we shouldn't have to wait long for service. They had one waiter that was very clumsy and forgetful, he didn't seem to know his way around the menu and kept telling us the kitchen isn't open yet. If the kitchen isn't open then why are we sitting down at a table??? This is my annual NY brunch with other families, so our kids were there and we had the slowest service. It was so terrible, I will have to find a new NY brunch place from now on."

  • "I've eaten at many Il Fornaios and this one on Battery Street in SF is one of the best. Betty Jane waited on us; she was attentive, accommodating, and a pleasure to have as our server. The food was excellent - Dad had the short ribs, which he thoroughly enjoyed. My husband and I both had the seafood linguine, which we enjoyed too. As a treat for Dad's birthday, Betty surprised him with complimentary candle-lit tiramisu. Dad was so full that he boxed the dessert to enjoy another time. Oh, and the bread, as always, was so wonderful, the best of the best. I think I could live on Il Fornaio bread and water :) Bonus: We had no trouble getting a last minute reservation on Saturday evening."

  • "This place looks very good for a romantic or special occasion dinner however the food was not so good. Service was excellent and the ambiance is great too but I was very disapponted with the food. I tool my fiancé for our anniversary and she didn't enjoy her entre. I had their special roasted duck and that was not worth the price is paid for. I will not be going there again."

  • "I really like Il Fornaio and have dinner there often since it's near the Bay Club. The staff is very nice to me and my little 6 yr-old. He loves the food especially the kid's sundae. I like the variety of healthy dishes and usually order the grilled seafood with the broccolini and potatoes with one of the salads. I like that it's affordable for us to come often - especially Happy Hour when you have the pizza specials."

  • "Had a lovely dinner at Il Fornio with my family. Great food, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings. We quite enjoyed the meal. The service was a little slow, but they also did not try to rush us out. We will eat here again."

  • "Have had party for a hundred and many meals for 2. Great ambiance. Excellent service. Would go for 5 stars if it were not for the occasional frozen lasagna, on the chef's day off. The seasonal specialties make up for this: Some truly outstanding pasta dishes and wines from Trentino to Sicily. Our favorite year round eatery."

  • "My sister visited with fond memories of this restaurant in this particular location. The menu did not have the choices that she and my mother particularly were looking for, and both were disappointed in the food they ordered as being not very tasty (this is in San Francisco, where food IS memorable). I enjoyed my dish. That was not the issue though. We had 11 AM-ish reservations on a Saturday and it was not at all busy. The waitperson brought us our bottle of wine but never offered us water or bread (unlike the few other tables). We had to ask for Parmesan cheese (it used to be grated freshly over the dish) and this finally showed up in a little bowl, looking like Kraft cheese - other tables still had theirs grated freshly."

  • "We had an excellent girls night out holiday get-together on Friday night. We all chose the Best of Festa tasting menu and everything was very good. I especially liked the chestnut pappardelle, the pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce very tasty. We sampled a couple of desserts and everyone loved the apple crepes. I always enjoy coming here, the decor and ambience are well-suited to a relaxing and enjoyable experience."

  • "We loved our last experience here a few weeks ago with a group of 9 that we decided to come back again. My wife and I had another lovely experience, great service and a truly wonderful fresh pasta that was part of their festa menu - "best of festa". I started with the special soup which was very hardy and perfect for this time of year. The place was very cozy and warm, lots of energy throughout. Love this place!"

  • "My alunmi and I meet annually for the holidays. There are usually 10-16 of us. This year 11 joined the annual get together. I asked that we be put in a corner so that we could have a better way to socialize. Il Fornaio was great and located us in a private room. This private room was set up in such a way that we could see each other and have one big group conversations. In years past, other restaurants would seat us in such a matter we could have a conversation with the people next us. The manager was great. He was a lot of fun and was great helping us take our group photo. Il Fonaio's food was outstanding. There was variety and the price was reasonable. We all enjoyed our meal."

  • "Traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner was quite good, with excellent soup and nice touches like vanilla bean gelato with the pumpkin pie, and the service was attentive and excellent. Very nice experience. Recommended."

  • "Took an hour to get appetizers than they tried to serve main entree 2minutes after we received them. I sent my food back as it was cold. Have had Il fornario in past and was very surprised by service level. We are assuming a Thanksgiving dinner was busier than normal, but rating this experience on service not quality of food."

  • "We have been to several Il Fornaio's before in the past. Our last visit was in San Francisco. We took my mother out for Thanksgiving lunch and we had a wonderful experience. Everything was top notch, from the service, the food, the selection, and the embience. My Mother was very pleased and so were we. A return is in the future for us. Highly recommend*"

  • "Thank you San Francisco Il Fornaio for accommodating our group of 9 at the last minute! We all had a truly wonderful experience and I can't thank you enough for the excellent service and wonderful food. Chef Ivan was kind enough to make us special pasta to accommodate the Vegans in our group and came up with an amazing salad and pasta. We had excellent wine that was suggested by our server. Overall the night was a great perfect! Thanks to all!"

  • "I really like the restaurant for its pasta and Italian pizza, which is completely different for what you get at places like Tonys pizza. The wine list is good, the staff is very friendly, on,y the seating takes sometimes a few minutes, even if tables are available and set up."
