Diner Reviews
  • "Drove up from SF to meet the kids for Easter brunch. We all loved it. The lamb was delicious, scrumptious shellfish, perfect roast beef, great desserts etc! Will definitely go on another occasion. "

  • "We recently learned that Il Fornaio hosts regional dinners each month. They feature foods from different regions of Italy. When you order from this special menu, they give you a gift and a passport card to have stamped each month you have a regional dinner. We have participated in April and May dinners and have been delighted on each occasion. Of course, you can order from their wonderful every day menu also. "

  • "This atmosphere was wonderful, even more than most Il Fornaio's. The food tasted great, but the made to order omelets did not offer much of a selection of ingredients and only one vegetable offered with the other dish. Sea food was delicious! Also, while the wait staff was very nice, friendly and made you feel comfortable, getting water and drinks was VERY slow. Our server apologized the first time, but the service didn't improve after that. A little disappointed, since it was Easter, I have been there for lunch and dinner other times and not had that issue. It was not very crowded, so that was not an excuse. I think to expensive for what the overall experience was. Would go again, but not for a Holiday."

  • "We have dined at this restaurant many times over the years and have never had one complaint on either food or service, however, this was our first Easter Brunch and it left much to be desired. The scrambled eggs and omelets were very good, but everything else was a disappointment. There were not any pastries or muffins, except corn muffins. Our server, (for coffee, etc.) who was very nice, was mostly absent. No refills for any drinks. Very disappointing when one would like a second cup of coffee. Never again for a brunch."

  • "Although I went to Il Fornaio for Easter brunch, it is often my birthday dinner choice! I love Italian good, but don't eat it often. Il Fornaio is my FAVORITE restaurant to get my fix. The ambience is beautiful, the service outstanding, and the food de-luscious!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 31st Wedding Anniversary dinner at Il Fornaio. We were very favorably impressed by the special treatment we got. The staff brought us treats that were unexpected and a dessert that was amazing. The main courses were also wonderful. Overall, this was one of the best dinners we have had."

  • "Il Fornaio is one of our favorite restaurants in Sacramento. The atmosphere is fantastic and upbeat, the food is great and the service is second to none. The staff puts in the extra effort to making your dining experience special. It feels like your in the City! This is the place we choose for dinner with our friends! And the husbands love the bar menu."

  • "I love the old world Italian look of this place, reminded me of places I have visited in Florence. I loved the fresh made pasta in my ravioli dish, plus the fact that there was a smaller size that you could order. My husband loved his veal with artichokes. Service was very good and it was really hard to decide between all the desserts so we went for the trio - glad we did, each small version of those three desserts was just right for my husband and I to share. There are even singers that come to your table and sing happy birthday to you in Italian - a nice touch."

  • "Our dinners and dessert trio were scrumptious. Service was outstanding and the atmosphere very nice. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "It was a nice treat to go to Il Fornaio midweek. The restaurant is beautiful with amazing natural lighting in an open, airy room. White tablecloth, a bit pricey for lunch, and very upscale, so probably too much for everyday, but a nice break from the ordinary take out or brown bag. The free-range chicken with salad was healthy, yummy, and definitely an ample portion."

  • "Il Fornaio has been my all-time favorite restaurant for years. I brought my theater going group of ladies and they all loved it!! The service, the ambiance and the food all outstanding!! Celebrated my birthday here last year and they treated us like royalty - extra special."

  • "My life partner and I made a return visit to Il Fornaio in Sacramento after a somewhat disappointing meal in February of this year. I am very happy to report that the food was again first class and the service was wonderful! We had the tasting menu for Basilicata and all three dishes were outstanding! The wine parings were spot on too. Dessert...chocolate mouse...and it was outstanding! Well done!"

  • "Excellent, as is usually the case at this location. One of my favorite restaurants for decades."

  • "The food has always been good, and the ambience is great. The service is a little hit and miss--sometimes the waiters are too familiar, and sometimes a little too intrusive. But over all, we will keep going back."

  • "Went to dinner with a group of 4 friends on Satuarday night. We were seated promptly. Service was excellent. My companions all raved about their entrees. The pizza and risotto were outstanding. I ordered the sea bass special. The fish itself was lacking flavor, the tomatoe topping was ok. Wine selections were great. I will come here again."

  • "I so enjoy the atmosphere and the attentive service. The good was delicious from the bread served before the meal to the amazing and so creative dessert menu presentation. I loved current regional menu. This restaurant is always a treat and never disappoints."

  • "We go out a lot, but rarely go "downtown" for dinner, thought we would try Il Fornaio for a change. So glad we did! We both ordered the Minestrone di Verdure. This is what Minestrone soup is suppose to taste like! For our entrees we both ordered the "Grigliata di Pesce Misto". This was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! The fish was not only FRESH, but expertly prepared! I highly recommend it for seafood lovers. It was followed by a very yummy dessert, the Zabaione alla Gritti. If you like fresh berries in a not too sweet, light creamy sauce, you will LOVE this! Ok, and if that wasn't enough, we got FREE PARKING and a full FREE charge for our electric hybrid Volt car! Plus, the menu listed the calories for each item. We can't wait to go back!"

  • "Made a reservation and checked in on time. We were told that we were behind one table of two and then we were forgotten about. I had to go to the maître D and remind her we were waiting. We got a very poor small table that was stuck in the middle of a ton of traffic. The food was not what I would expect from the price tag. Subpar at best."

  • "I've been to other El Fornaio's but this was a real treat. The area they designated for our group and the service we received was outstanding."

  • "My wife and I ate dinner here to celebrate her birthday. We had been here once before, a few years ago, and she really enjoyed it. We requested the same 2-person table we had the first time. A gentlemen sang happy birthday in Italian, which was a nice touch. The food was good, as was the service."

  • "Had lunch with a colleague on 2/26/14. The food was fair but the service was very good. Overall I would go back but if you are really going for the food experience you will want to go elsewhere. It's a chain so I guess that is expected."

  • "It had been years since my partner and I had dined at Il Fornaio, and we had such a great experience, we're sure it won't be long before we return. Everything was great -- food, atmosphere and service."

  • "Great food, great bartender and perfect setting for a birthday celebration. Very pleased. We did feel liker our server was a bit mechanical as he went over the menu and desserts with us. A little overboard in his stuffy manner."

  • "Have been to this place many times, love the decor but the food is trending down. Caesar salad had no dressing other the anchovies I requested. Bread is good. Wine choices were good but very pricey. My wife's sole (recommended by server) was horrid. My sliced rare beef was in a languid puddle of supposed balsamic reduction (the cook doesn't understand 'reduction' but does understand how to sweeten balsamic and soak meat in it to the point the meat is inedible). Desserts were not good and I have had the same ones on prior occasions. This place has a great location and promise but something is terribly amiss. I feel bad for them but won't be returning anytime soon."

  • "If you're yearning for a great meal where you will be taken care of properly, this is the right place. The always professional staff is personable and eager to please. The monthly 'Taste of Italy' three course dinner is a delicious alternative to ordering separately. And on the cocktail menu, try the Capri - a berry infused vodka drink with Acai liquor - the most flavorful mixed drink I've ever had (and I've tasted a few!). Il Fornaio is simply dining done right."

  • "Food was delicious and the service was great the only thing is that it was too packed and our table was in a very inconvenient spot."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "My husband and I dinned here for Valentine’s Day. The food was absolutely wonderful. I had the penne a la vodka(spelling?) and he had spinach ravioli. The ambiance was great. My only complaints were the portion sizes as we found they were too small as well our seats. We sat at a small round table that seemed to wobble whenever we applied pressure to the table and the seats were bucket like patio chairs which sat really low to the ground. With my husband’s long legs and my high heels it made it uncomfortable on our knees . Otherwise for the over Romantic vibe and good food I would suggest it."

  • "I've dined here before and it was excellent. But tonight, with the exception of one in our party of 5, the food was totally off. The service was spotty, and one of the larger employees made me feel like I was always in his way. Don't order the sole (cooked to shoe leather along with rock hard mushrooms), the half chicken (old and dry), or the salad de la casa (with rusted lettuce and mushy tomatoes). But in their defense, the manager comped our meals, and the bread, pastries and desserts were fabulous. Especially the flourless chocolate cake and the bread pudding! I will return for a lunch again since they have successfully prepared several that I've truly enjoyed! It was simply an off night for them...."
