Literally "the baker" in Italian, Il Fornaio offers wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade and imported pastas; pizzas from a wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; antipasti and a wide variety of desserts made daily from scratch.   • "Our visit was the second one for us. We'd wanted to take some friends of ours there for quite some time--they're of Italian heritage--but both couples were always busy! We finally made it and really enjoyed the entire dinner. Mae, our VERY knowledgeable server, was simply very astute and accommodating (we were "catching up" on things and were there for 2 1/2 hours). The food was excellent as were the mixed drinks."

  • "I've been to the bar multiple times. The place is always packed with people waiting on tables, so I assumed it must be great. Made a reservation last weekend. Started out okay. Nothing overwhelming great, but not to the point where I wouldn't come back. Then our entrees arrived. I ordered a small portion of pasta. The size was fine, but it had no taste. My husband ordered a seafood pasta special. It looked similar to a Healthy Choice frozen dinner and even that would be a compliment. It consisted of several baby shrimp and what probably equated to a single bay scallop cut into 5 pieces. There was no sauce, just water. My husband did not eat it, but pushed it aside. They were kind enough to take it off the tab after we asked them to do so."

  • "The core menu is fine and has the traditional favorites, the less complex the choice the better of course. However, don't skip over the regional specials that change frequently. They are well prepared and an excellent way to try dishes you may have never seen on a menu outside of Italy. This is one of our go to places."

  • "I tried their Sicilian dishes: half eggplant with ring pasta and sauce, bronzino with a tomato sauce with capers, pine nuts, and golden raisins, and an appetizer with fried flat calamari with a caponata. Very wonderful flavors. Wish the service could have been faster and that there was a little more lighting. The restaurant sort of made up for that with an offer of a hand painted dish from Italy for those who partook of the regional meals. Nice touch!"

  • "Very good venue for a busines lunch or a evening meal. Limited 'by the glass' wine list and the bottle prices are big city versus Reston. Parking is convinient....Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Three course lunch menu was excellent!"

  • "We went to for Father's Day dinner but I'm not certain we'll be back any time soon. When they called that morning to confirm, I was asking questions about their Gluten Free Menu which they could not answer;the web site was more helpful. Upon arrival, everything was great. We were escorted to our table, which was set for 5 people when there were 6 of us in our party. We had difficulty getting another chair and place setting; we asked 3 people before we were helped. The food was good, but service was extremely slow. We had other small issues such as clean silverware and additional drinks. Our waiter had a wonderful personality which was nice. I'm chalking up our experience to the fact it was Father's Day and the resturant was incrediby busy."

  • "We went to Il Fornaio on a Saturday afternoon and had a great experience. Both their brunch menu and regular menu had a good number of items, and the food was delicious. Linguini was great, and so was the waffle. My little kids even ate for free thanks to their new brunch policy. It was an awesome experience at a wonderful restaurant!!!"

  • "In one sentence, we have no burning desire to return. Finally able to make a res thru OT-special request (this was impt.-to us) was a quieter table as my wife is hard of hearing. No such luck, got seated as close to the kitchen as possible (table 14 - yuck), and conversation was quite difficult. Food was boring from start to finish - bruschetta (bread had more flavor than the rest), beet salad (no dressing, wilted arugula), Canneloni was "fine" and the butternut ravioli was decent but the pasta was so thick it overpowered the filling and became gummy. The table bases are so large that you can't push your chair in to get close enough to eat so you end up sitting on the edge of your chair. Server, Catherine was wonderful, coffee was hot."

  • "I generally don't like to frequent Italian restaurants in general because they very much overcharge for cheap spaghetti. However, Il Fornaio makes their own pasta and even the salad was good quality. The only complaint was the service. Our server was nice when he showed up, but that was rarely even when very few people were in the restaurant."

  • "Fit the bill when looking for an outside dining location. Service was excellent, though it took about 15 minutes to be seated even with a reservation. Bread was delicious. My dinner pal enjoyed her roasted beet salad and ravioli with sage immensely. I ordered a seafood risotto that was ok, but wish it was a bit more flavorful and creamy. It was made with salmon and seemed to be overcompeting for the rest of the flavors. Have been there before and was happy, and would definitely consider going again."

  • "1.We have been in this place 3x and cannot understand why servers do not provide straws upon serving drinks. We always have to ask. 2.If I may suggest, instead of the Balsamic Vinegar with the Olive oil for bread dipping, please try fried garlic. A little would really amplify sensation. 3.Please remind servers to always ask first before removing food from the table and to never assume that patrons are already done with the dish. Our calamari was down to the last 10pcs and it was simply taken away without any inquiry. If I am not mistaken, these are basics in serving and having worked in the food industry before, it is always the little things that gets amplified. Food is good and happy hour is great but can be extended to 7p"

  • "We had guests from Germany that wanted to meet our family so it was important to find a place that could accommodate the varied tastes of our large party as well as be conducive to conversation. Il Fornaio in Reston was just perfect! A nice wine selection, food that made everyone happy and some great service from Bruno, the bartender. One of our guests arrived quite late due to a dead car battery but they were able to quickly serve him his dinner while we had our desserts. Thank you for another wonderful evening!"

  • "We made reservations for dinner with a very close friend we hadn't seen in a very long time. My focus was not on the food, wine, or ambiance, but our server was great (Trevor, or Tristan...). I wasn't paying attention, but he was. When my friend received a lamb that was too well done, he made an effort to see what he could do to improve it. He was present, but not pushy. We had what we needed, and he left us alone to talk...and talk...and talk. I used to spend a lot of time at Il Fornaio in Pasadena (one of my favorite places for mid-morning coffee and pastry), it was nice to find a similar social spot out here. Will go back. "

  • "I ate at Il Fornaio on a Wednesday night and the place was packed. We were immediately taken to our table, but from there the service was SLOW. Our waiter was also waiting on a 10 person table and seemed to want to pay attention to them more than just my party of 2. To have 3 courses it ended up taking 2 hours which I found to be a bit much. We waited forever to get our check. The food was good, definitely better than average, although the calories printed on the menu make you feel a bit guilty about what you order. "

  • "My wife and I dined at il Fornaio last Thanksgiving and had a wonderful meal with great service and we made a point of returning. It wasn't crowded. Flash forward to Saturday, May 17. We drive from our home in Maryland to Reston, VA for a special occaision. The pizza we shared as an appetizer was great. The seafood pasta was okay. We had too wait 15-20 minutes or more after we finished each coarse before we got the next. It took over 2.5 hours for a dinner for 2. And we were not trying to linger; we wanted to move on due to the noisy atmosphere. The wait staff are talented, just trying to cover too many customers."

  • "We brought friends out for dinner at Il Fornaio in Reston last Sunday. The food was excellent. We all took advantage of the seasonal tasting menu. Each diner could make their own selections and customize within the options. One of our diners was vegetarian and had no problem finding some great selections. Our waiter was very attentive. By the time we got to the entree, they had sold out of the fish we all had selected and so the server brought us a complimentary glass of wine. The server recommended the veal with prociutto as an alternate and it was SO GOOD! They had an excellent live jazz music combo playing. It was a very pleasant backdrop to a delightful dinner. "

  • "We decided to try this restaurant since close to home, but don't plan to return. The food was average, service very slow, and noise level was too much (which would be good for large groups so not have to worry about talking loudly down the table). Crowded feeling - we had to push everyone at our table (six of us) close together to make room in the walkway for waiters and patrons to pass. For same price, can get much better food with much better atmosphere elsewhere such as Filomena's in Georgetown which we now know will be worth the trip."

  • "Il fornaio features authentic italian fare with a mediterranean twist, terrifiic homemade pastas, and a bartender who can even make a decent sidecar, which is pretty unusual. The noise level is pretty high but not as annoyign as a lot of places these days, and there's a comfortable outdoor seating porch as well. The bar is classy and removed from the main dining area, and the menu changes regularly as the restaurant pays homage to various geographical areas of Italy."

  • "We chose this restaurant because of the convenient location and the reasonable pricing. We were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere: the restaurant was crowded, but it was still easy to have intimate conversations in a group, and everything felt very sophisticated with the white table cloths and wine glasses set up at every table. The waiters were all very courteous. The food came in very good portion sizes (just enough to be filling but not stuffed) and was absolutely delicious. It is also such a relief upon receiving the bill because it felt as if we would pay a fortune but it only ended up costing about $20 per person. This is our new go-to restaurant! "

  • "We dined here on the Saturday before Mother's day which also happened to be prom night. For some reason the kitchen wasn't ready to deal with the crowds which resulted in us having to wait 45 minutes for simple salads. When we complained to the management they were attentive but really missed out on a opportunity to turn around our experience. They offered up free desserts but not any discount off our bill (which was the appropriate thing to do for such slow service). On the servers, ours was also below average. There are some great servers at that restaurant but unfortunately we didn't get one of them. I'll be very cautious before going back there vs heading over to a place like Passion Fish."
