Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Ambience is pleasant although if crowded it can be quite loud with nothing to absorb the sound. This is the first time we've been there where the service was slow. But, just at our table it seemed. Watching the other diners, the wait staff seemed quite attentive. I think we just got a waiter who was having an off night. Other than that, the food was great and we were certainly return."

  • "We have dined for lunch and dinner at Il Fornaio since it opened years ago! Nothing has changed! It was great then and it is great now! The service is excellent - especially SONIA - who goes out of her way to please! The food is always beautifully prepared, creatively presented and so good! We had the beef carpaccio, special sea bass ravioli, bolognese, and butternut squash ravioli and all were excellent! We had a trio of their great gellattos - sea salt caramel, deep dark chocolate and vanilla bean! Wow was that good! We can always recommend Il Fornaio with confidence. You cannot go wrong here!"

  • "I love this restaurant since I had been here a few times and invited a couple who,had never been there before. I requested the patio but when I got there and checked in,the girl said that the restaurant called me and left a message (they didn't)'that the patio was occupied with a special,event so they were placing us inside. The service wasn't bad but it took us over one hour to receive our entree. We complained so the waitress offered us free dessert for the four of us. I was really embarrassed that it took forever to get our meal."

  • "What a disappointment our recent evening at Il Fornaio was. We had out of state guests, looking forward to great California cuisine. After our party was seated, we waited and waited. No service whatsoever. Finally we had to flag down a water server to ask if he could send our waiter over.First red flag. When the waiter finally made it over, he was clearly miffed as he offered an insincere apology. When asking him of recommendations he basically stated that everything was excellent. I personally hate hearing this! It's a lazy response. So, eventually placing our orders we finally got our meals. Food presentation and taste were nondescript, I was stunned. Also, the prices didn't reflect what we received!"

  • "Came in with family to dine for the Festa Regionale - Sicilia. The Festa Regionale is a preset menu for a set price, whereupon you get a appetizer, a primi (pasta typically), and an entree. I greatly enjoyed the menu selection and food we had that evening. The fava, garbanzo, and pinto bean soup was hearty and delicious. The pasta had these veal meatballs which for me were quite juicy and succulent. My entree was grilled lamp chops with this insanely good mint-oil concoction drizzled on top and around the plate. Service was good, although at first our waiter was a bit slow to warm up to us. As the evening went on he became much more hospitable. He timed our plates perfectly between courses. I would have him as a waiter again."

  • "i've been here several times and every time i've enjoyed the food. we took my mom here for her birthday and she had one of the specials which was a lobster and shrimp pasta, which she enjoyed. my dad polished off his lasagna. my husband cleared his seafood linguini. i had the mixed seafood plate and it was tasty though a little on the salty side. i chose this place for it's roominess since we had a baby with us. there was lots of space between tables, high chair fit easily and they were very accommodating to our baby. they had friendly service and a good selection of desserts. mom got a complimentary panna cotta for her birthday dessert which was very smooth in taste. lots of large parties around us so it's popular for groups."

The food quality is consistently good and if you catch the right week(s), there is a special regional menu from a particular region in Italy. The food from these menus are outstanding and they even offer the proper wine choice to pair with the food you choose. Nice touch."

  • "This was my first time here and I wanted to try a little variety so I ordered the Beef carpaccio, which was displayed unimaginatively and had a bitter taste to it. The olive oil for bread dipping also tasted bitter, not sure why? The Lasagna I had to send back because it was still cold in the middle, after a quick re-heat it was brought back out to me with just minor improvement in temperature and really tasted very ordinary. After reading all the reviews I was really hoping for a excellent lunch but was rather disappointed. I don't know if I am just really super fussy when it comes to dining out or just expect to be "wowed" every time for the $$ I spend eating out. "

  • "My family chose Il Fornaio to celebrate a very special occasion that occurred on the same day; our 28th wedding anniversary and our son's college graduation. My daughters' planned to surprise us with a bottle of champagne. The service was incredibly poor and our waiter, in particular, ruined the surprise by bringing an ice bucket to the table 15 minutes before bringing the champagne. His manner was demeaning to my daughters and he acted as though being there was the last place he wanted to be. The food was poor to mediocre and for the prices charged, the food and experience should be top-notch. Obviously, this was not the place to celebrate our special occasion. "

  • "I hosted a graduation celebration for my nephew. The service was great. The staff greeted me and served the guests extremely well. The appetizers were good and were placed on time and also within contract. Unfortunately the lunch was very bland and everyone invited was trying to be courteous and eat the food selections they were hosted, however none of the selections were up to Il Fornaio standards I am not sure what happened or why the food was unacceptable. I do not know how this travesty occurred. Unfortunately we cannot take the lunch experience back for my guests. The gelato was superb and served with the cake we ordered from Takes the Cake. Horrible and VERY expensive cooking mishap day for me and my 35 guests at one of my favs"

  • "Wow! We had a great experience here at this location. Pasadena Il Fornaio treated us extremely well and were so kind to accommodate our dietary needs. Chef Luis Escobar had no trouble making both my wife and I amazing fresh salads and pasta dishes. It was wonderful. It all started with their General Manager, Mr. Perera, came over to introduce himself as we sat down and we explained our diet situation. He made us feel very comfortable right away and assured us that we would be taken care of, and we were. We sat out on the patio facing the plaza. It was a perfect environment to relax and enjoy our lunch. Thank you Pasadena Il Fornaio for making our visit so wonderful. Excellent food, service and experience. "

  • "Been coming here for years now. Relaxing. Servers are abundant so you never want for anything. Creative food and desserts along with traditional selections. If you like to pig-out or if you're on a diet Il Fornaio has many choices for all of us. Valet parking makes getting to the plaza restaurant easy for us - our mother is in a wheelchair and is appreciative of the convenient access. People watching is wonderful here also. BTW, the restaurant gives you a discount for valet."
