A word from Il Fornaio - Pasadena
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers.
Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.

Diner Reviews
  • "We were greeted warmly, seated immediately and was assigned a personable but not invasive server, who made us feel very welcome. Our guests arrived and they too were made to feel special and comfortable. The meals were all delicious as were the desserts. All in all, a very pleasant experience. We look forward to returning and highly recommend Il Fornaio."

  • "Very tasty meal in a quaint outdoor patio. Music in the courtyard added to a great night. Spinach filled ravioli was great."

  • "Il Fornaio did not live up to our past visits. Service was mildly lacking: customer not being offered cheese with food. A bottle of wine was purchased and delivered to the table, however, not offered to be served after initial pouring. Dessert was almost finished when coffee arrived. My meal was fine, however, husband complained that second pasta course was dry and had three very small, untasty meatballs, his fish entre lacked flavor. We have eaten at this restaurant many times in the past and will return. We chalk this up as an "off" night."

  • "I've resorted to comparing Italian restaurants with the restaurants in Italy and those in Boston's North End (the best in America, In my opinion) by having lasagna at each one. The entree here doesn't hold up that well: bland, bland, bland. The North End's lasagna literally explodes in your mouth, the flavor is so superlative. Here, nothing...not a bad dish necessarily, but certainly nothing to return for. Same feeling on the bruschetta and the dessert. That said, everything else was fine, but for a restaurant that gets more than four stars on this site, I expected more. Perhaps its in the other entrees, but give me Ugo in CC anytime. And, perhaps this place is overrated."

  • "We had a party of 7 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. They have a great wine list, but since very few people in our group like wine, we ordered by the glass. Most restaurants don't offer a large selection by the glass, Il Fornaio has a great by the glass selection. I asked for a taste of one of the wines, since I had never had that particular varietal before, no problem. Very accommodating and friendly staff."

  • "We went to Il Fornaio before an event at the Rose Bowl. Everything tasted pretty good, but the whole experience was much more chain-like than I expected. Big portions, pretty straightforward dishes, etc. I was expecting a smaller, more intimate, cuter Italian restaurant. The bread was of course delicious though!"

  • "I brought two guests to Il Forniao. I didn't dare ask them how they liked their food because my own, pasta with chicken and broccoli, was pretty terrible. It was absolutely tasteless, and the pasta was downright tough -- not simply el dente. The noise level made it virtually impossible to talk. Couldn't wait to escape the noise and the need to shout to people sitting two feet across the table from me."

  • "Some of our party were attending the Beyoncé-JZ Rose Bowl concert and the restaurant was jumping--full inside and out--but our table was ready and waiting, our server was gracious and accommodating with dietary restrictions and our meal was delicious on all counts. The concert-goers were able to finish and still get to the Rose Bowl on time. The rest of us enjoyed leisurely dessert and coffee. This was our first visit to this location (our local Il Fornaio in Santa Monica is no more :(() and next time we head east we'll remember what a delightful dinner we enjoyed here."

  • "Nice place to meet for dinner. Good bar area. Good food. The service could have been a bit more personable. Our waiter seemed to be overloaded."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner and the food was great, however we did not receive good service from our waiter (I think he was covering to many tables), hopefully it was a fluke, but not sure."

  • "The staff was friendly and accommodating of our two-year-old's stroller. Service was friendly and fast. We enjoyed our experience and plan to come back very soon."

  • "Parking is Horrible. Waiter was in a rush to get us out of there. In middle of service he excused himself to talk to someone he knew. Food was mediocre at best."

  • "Pasadena - The food varies from mediocre to fairly good. Recommend the sea bass. Risotto and chicken are just ok. Dinning outside almost makes-up for the variable food quality. The wine list is good, but I've seen better. Deserts are consistently pretty good. I still would recommend it for a stand-by."

  • "We went here to celebrate a birthday for our friend's daughter. The place wasn't too full on a Saturday night. We were seated right away. The server was very nice and explained the menu items. I tried the dineLA menu and the food was very good. The pasta dish was huge and big enough for 2 people to share. The place is a bit noisy but it is not annoying. The dessert cart is very nice. The fake display looked very attractive and we ended up having 3 desserts. They were very tasty. I would recommend this restaurant."

  • "I always enjoy eating at Il Fornaio, especially if I can get a table on the patio (in warmer months). Service is very good, food is very good and eating on the patio reminds me of the sidewalk cafes in Europe. It is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Pasadena. I had the seasonal chicken and asparagus risotto which was quite delicious - creamy and seasoned with saffron. The salted caramel gelato for desert was one of the best I have eaten."

  • "Went for a nice anniversary dinner, unfortunately we were disappointed.Service was fine but the food and drinks were mediocre at best. How do you screw up Lemonade? I could not recommend this place for a nice evening-we could have gone to Olive Garden and had the same thing. Not like the Il Fornaio of old."

  • "We have celebrated many special occasions at Il Fornaio. Our youngest daughter, Lindsey, chose Il Fornaio to celebrate her 21st birthday. Everything was well above our expectations. The food was excellent as always & service was beyond exceptional (Allisa was our server). We will always consider Il Fornaio a very special part of our family celebrations."

  • "It's always a great dining experience at Pasadena Il Fornaio. The food is well prepared, nicely seasoned and presented. They offer a nice selection of wines. And the servuce staff are very professional as well as just plain nice. You can also choose to eat inside where there is a great trattoria/bar scene. Or eat on their patio for a quieter atmosphere. What more could one ask?"

  • "Chose this amazing restaurant to celebrate my 50th birthday. 50 years of success was a great experience. Food was amazing service was great ambience was nice, however I had a party of seven and would have liked to have had one big table rather than two small tables put together was a just a little user unfriendly other than that an amazing experience"

  • "Sat outside. Have had good service in the past, but slow attentive staff this last time. To be fair, there was an outdoor summer movie playing in the quad when we went & it was crowded. Still had a nice meal. Always friendly staff."

  • "My order was initially wrong and when I finally received the right meal, the food was over seasoned. The restaurant didn't offer to comp any part of the meal even though it was their mistake. My wife did like her seafood linguine."

  • "The Bigoli (pasta special) was great; the chicken special was poor....skin on and who want curry in an Italian restaurant. Service got off to a bad start....we got bread and oil....then waited 12 minutes for any sign of a waitress and something to drink. So much for Festa Regionale!"

  • "We enjoy the monthly regional selections. This month was Venice. We enjoyed the octopus salad, the gnocchi with lamb sausage, and the sole over polenta."

  • "Salad and pasta course was very good, but main course (sole) was tasteless. Service was poor. We waited 90 minutes for the entries."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "We enjoyed our meal and the food...only problem was the inattention of the waiter. We waited 20 minutes before we flagged down another server who took drink orders and 15 more minutes for our waiter to show and mention the wine was on the way...too long."

  • "Il Fornaio has always been consistently good with variety on the menu from month to month and year to year. Ambience is pleasant although if crowded it can be quite loud with nothing to absorb the sound. This is the first time we've been there where the service was slow. But, just at our table it seemed. Watching the other diners, the wait staff seemed quite attentive. I think we just got a waiter who was having an off night. Other than that, the food was great and we were certainly return."

  • "We have dined for lunch and dinner at Il Fornaio since it opened years ago! Nothing has changed! It was great then and it is great now! The service is excellent - especially SONIA - who goes out of her way to please! The food is always beautifully prepared, creatively presented and so good! We had the beef carpaccio, special sea bass ravioli, bolognese, and butternut squash ravioli and all were excellent! We had a trio of their great gellattos - sea salt caramel, deep dark chocolate and vanilla bean! Wow was that good! We can always recommend Il Fornaio with confidence. You cannot go wrong here!"

  • "I love this restaurant since I had been here a few times and invited a couple who,had never been there before. I requested the patio but when I got there and checked in,the girl said that the restaurant called me and left a message (they didn't)'that the patio was occupied with a special, event so they were placing us inside. The service wasn't bad but it took us over one hour to receive our entree. We complained so the waitress offered us free dessert for the four of us. I was really embarrassed that it took forever to get our meal."

  • "What a disappointment our recent evening at Il Fornaio was. We had out of state guests, looking forward to great California cuisine. After our party was seated, we waited and waited. No service whatsoever. Finally we had to flag down a water server to ask if he could send our waiter over.First red flag. When the waiter finally made it over, he was clearly miffed as he offered an insincere apology. When asking him of recommendations he basically stated that everything was excellent. I personally hate hearing this! It's a lazy response. So, eventually placing our orders we finally got our meals. Food presentation and taste were nondescript, I was stunned. Also, the prices didn't reflect what we received!"
