Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Only downside is that the table placements make it feel like you are sitting at a table with strangers. Tables are place next to each other with only a railing separating them.   • "The service was extremely slow. For the price of the food, you would have thought the service would have been good or even mediocre! We waited so long to receive our dinner on a Friday night that we asked for it to go. The bartender noticed we still haven't received our food and asked us where our food was. He then went to get it himself. When he came back my girlfriend wanted to leave because of the slow service. I did ask for a manager to complain about the service before we left. The price is not cheap and for that you would think at least you would get mediocre service. Ours was very slow."

You can sit inside where it's cozy, wine is nice, coffee is great. Doesn't get much better than this, casual yet chic. Love it, love it, love it."

  • "I was disappointed to have to wait more that a half an hour past my reservation time to be seated. I asked to see the manager and the hostess said the manager would come by our table. The manager was a no-show. What's the point of reservations if your reservation is not relatively prompt?"

  • "I live within walking distance so on an 80 degree night in California Old Town I was pleased to casually go into Il Fornio after popping into a few shops. We were seated right away and within a minute had bread and a drink order placed with our waiter. He was very attentive and made excellent drink recommendations. The penne alla vodka is a definite must here, as well as their cucumber cocktail. Romantic date night"

I recently ate their with my son and I told him that if I had a restaurant I would want it to look just like Il Fornaio Pasadena! Whatever I select on the menu, it's ALWAYS excellent and my fave dessert is the espresso poured over the ice-cream. Loooove it!!!"

  • "I love Il Fornaio have been enjoying the Pasadena location for decades. To celebrate a special birthday my daughter asked to dine there. It was probably my least favorite visit. The service was off. We ate an entire basket of bread before we even had water ! We were dying for a cocktail - couldn't get the attention of staff. The usual delicious menu introduction was absent, we were totally left to our own and our waitress was not particularly genial. After we ordered, we waited almost 45 mins for our food. It was not the best night. To their credit, because I mentioned the birthday online, they brought complementary panne cotta. Good thing because we didn't have time for a real dessert, as the valet was closing ! Arr 7:45, left after 10 pm"

  • "We had a group of 6 that wanted to talk during lunch, so we made an early reservation (11:30am), and got a great table (round) that allowed us to interact equally. We were one of the first groups seated at lunch, so there wasn't a lot of background noise in the restaurant and we could hear each other very well. The staff was solicitous and didn't interrupt our conversation. They would wait near the table until a pause in conversation (or a joke was finished) before they would ask questions or offer suggestions. I really appreciated that. Overall, I'm very satisfied and would certainly dine there again."

  • "My wife and I come here for her birthday. We started with Bruchettine Casareccie appetizer which was really good. Food was very good as well and it went well with the wine the server recommended. However, I am disappointed with the dessert. The server recommended Tortino di Ricotta e Pistacchio but I really did not like. I think I would prefer the Gelato Scoop."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed an anniversary dinner here while visiting Pasadena on a business trip. We ordered the house Chianti and didn't enjoy it, so our server quickly exchanged it for another wine (a Sangiovese) that we did like. My husband loved his lasagna, but I was a little disappointed by the shell pasta with chicken that I ordered. There wasn't very much chicken in it and what there was was dry and over cooked. The sauce was very good, though, and the pasta was perfectly al dente. We are typically more adventurous eaters and enjoy good wine, but on that evening we were tired and hungry and just wanted comfort food with good service. We found that here, and will return whenever we are in the area."

  • "After too many nightmare experiences on Valentine's night ie., price fixed menus with no special accommodations; long waits even after securing a reservation; harried servers; rushed after finally being seated; in other words, not pleasant or conducive to a romantic evening, our experience at the Pasadena Il Fornaio was a surprising pleasure. Although the restaurant was hopping and pretty full by our 6:00 p.m. reservation, we were seated immediately, our server, although very busy, was very attentive and helpful in our selections; the food was delicious, and we were able to leave in time for the 8:00 performance at the Civic. Thank goodness a great experience with great food! We will definitely be back. Great choice!"

  • "A restaurant that delivers a white table cloth experience for red and white checked prices. It's a value that's unique and wonderful. You are treated to all the finer amenities and aren't breaking the bank. I love this place. And as an aside it has a terrific selection of private party rooms. Service was slow and not very attentive. Seating for two wasn't great as it abutted to a table of 4. Not exactly a romantic setting. Think I'll stick to Macaronni Grill."

  • "We went their for Valentine's night and it was a great experience. We've all been to dinners on busy nights that seemed rushed or the service was slow but not with this place. We had reservations and they got us seated as soon as we arrived. The service was great and the timing was perfect. Not too fast and not too slow. The food came out perfect. Top notch on every way. The only thing they forgot was to offer to validate. We had a wonderful time!"

Wines by the glass choices made it worthwhile for each guest to choose his own wine according to their own food choice. If I lived close by, this would be a regular stop. We were a party of four.   • "From wine to desserts, this is a great place for an intimate dinner for two or a gathering for a dozen friends. The staff is attentive without being obtrusive and they are expert at pairing the right wine for the chosen entre. Their assistance was thoughtful and the recommendation complimented the food tremendously. The entres were generous and nicely presented. There were several regional Calabrian seafood recipes and each is worth a try for any Italian food lover. Desserts looked tempting, but a little too much bread at the outset left us unable to indulge. Next time perhaps. Enjoy an evening out with family or friends at Il Fornaio. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Had a very enjoyable evening with friends for diner. The food was superb - as my wife described "the pasta tasted homemade" which is unusual for a restaurant. The only downside was the service. I understand that we arrived at a busy time but we didn't have any contact with our waiter for at least 25 minutes. I finally had to ask who are waiter was and if he could join us for the evening! It would have been fine if he had gotten some drinks in our hand and then he could have disappeared for a while but thats not how it evolved. Fortunately, we were with great friends and and the evening finished off perfectly."

Don't go there for romantic dinner or if you want to listen to what your friends say as you sit 2 inches away from the next table. Food was good, wine as well. However, I would not recommend this restaurant to a friend because of the ambience and noise level."
