A word from Il Fornaio - Manhattan Beach
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The carpaccio, Cristina pizza, and Linguine Mare Chiaro were delicious! We love the Zabaione! However we were very disappointed with the Pollo Toscano. This pollo was dry and not very tasty. The $4.99 chicken at Costco is so much better. Also disappointed that the Piatto Smeralda isn't served for dinner."

  • "Just drove into manhattan beach, calif and driving around looking for dining spots and beach locations. Saw this restaurant, thought Italian sounded good, was close to our hotel so went on line to view menu and read reviews. Recent reviews were nothing what we experienced. Service was superb, extensive wine list, food wasn't your typical pasta and spaghetti entrees. Overall, very impressed. If this is a chain, please come to Tulsa."

  • "2 ladies celebrating their Birthdays at Brunch! Pleasant service, but delivery of food was disjointed - it didn't all arrive together. The toast under the Eggs Benedict was so stale it couldn.t be cut w/ a knife or teeth. We had to flag down Server and ask to see Desert Menu. Once we made our choice, he then told us we were entitled to a different selection since it was our Birthdays. I had specifically e-mailed ahead to let the Restaurant know it was both our Birthdays. Someone didn't read it, I guess. The cannoli, however, was very yummy."

  • "Yes, it is a chain. But, the food is very good. There is usually something for everyone in a group to enjoy, including many grilled meat or fish entrees. Our group ordered a steak entree, grilled salmon and ravioli and all of the entrees were very good. Ambiance is nice and wine specials were interesting."

  • "Was somewhat disappointed with the lamb chops - tough. First time I ever had a disappointing meal. Can happen every once in awhile. We'll be back. be back."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Food was good, however service was horrible. Once seated, our server never came and had to ask manager to find him. Had to ask for our bill twice and when it came we received 2, ours and someone elses and to make matters worse, paid our bill and server short changed us - Must say, the bus personnel should be given recognition as they were very attentive to our needs, i.e., water, bread and taking away unwanted plates quickly. Bartender was good as well - we should have stayed in the bar to have our dinner!"

  • "I always come in for lunch when meeting up with family. I've been to many different restaurants in the chain and this is my favorite. Sitting outside is so lovely. The food is always wonderfully fresh and excellent quality. I have to say, I love that you've started having calorie counts on your menu. The service is always excellent from the host to the busser to the service staff. I love it here."

  • "Hubby and I were looking forward to a nice dinner. He ordered rack of lamb and glass of wine and I ordered seafood pasta. He asked waiter if "med rare" was bloody or pink, since he wanted it pink. Waiter told him to order med rare. Both of our dishes came at same time. The lamb was too bloody and had to be sent back. In the meantime, I ate my pasta (which was bland and skimpy on the seafood). By the time my husband's dinner was returned to him, I was almost done with mine. My husband's lamb was tough, so we're not sure how it was recooked, or if it was just tough on its own. We ordered flourless chocolate cake for dessert, which was good. Thought they would have at least comp'd us the dessert. We're not in a hurry to return."

  • "I dined with my team of 3 people and had the beef carpaccio - excellent with plenty of shaved reggio-parmisano and capers with the right amount of olive oil and arugula; the Penne Alla Vodka dish was delicious - not too much sauce and the pasta definitely home-made - could have had a little more sauce as the bread was delicious....portion was small given it was my entree but I was able to finish all and did not feel hungry - desserts were plentiful with a large variety of chocolate, pflan's, and delicious bread pudding.....wine list is great as they had the Duckhorn Decoy zinfandel and Rombauer cab. Would go back again and do a "specialty entree" - salmon looked good as it was "wild""

  • "I go to this location about every six to eight weeks. The last two times I've been pleasantly surprised with the food. It's been tasty and well prepared. The service is generally good. This last time, however, the risotto with shrimp, not so good. The risotto was not cooked through. it was hard. There was a thick slice of garlic I bit into -- not a pleasant experience either. It too was hard. The shrimp were very small. The service was spotty. Had to call the server over three times. We felt neglected and forgotten. How did the gelatto dessert come ten minutes after everyone else's dessert? Is it not already made? Scoop it into a pretty bowl, right? Odd evening."

  • "We were running late out of a meeting therefore arriving 15 minutes late for our reservation. The wait staff seemed hurried to wait the table. They weren't careful in removing the plates from the table and splashed food on the front of my dining companion's shirt. They just dropped the bread on the table. We got the feeling that they weren't happy that they had to wait on us. Not likely to return."

  • " This location is our favorite restaurant. We like to experience the cuisine of all the regions of Italy, not just the tomato and pasta kind. Servers are attentive and offer advice on the menu choices and combinations."

  • "Excellent spot for business lunch busy, reasonable in price and great business ambiance"

  • "Our water was brought in glasses just out of the dishwasher so the glass was hot. As a result, the water was warm. The waitress couldn't figure that out? I loved my spaghetti Bolognaise. The pasta was perfectly cooked and it was nicely sauced. It was a really good dish and I will come back for it. Seems simple but many places can't make al dente pasta or sauce it correctly"

  • "I love the outdoor eating area as it was a beautiful day-the food was great, came out in a timely manner and the waitress was enthusiastic and definitely presented the menu well."

  • "We were all in awe of how good the food was and how well presented it was. My husband wanted Italian for Fathers Day and had picked a pizza place. I said we had to do better than that for a special occasion. Il Fornaio fit the bill and even had pizza had we wanted it. We will definitely be returning."

  • "I do not eat lamb chops very often these days but I am so glad I ordered the ones on the Sicilian regional menu. They were fantastic. The wine was also wonderful. It was the blend of Nero d'Avolo and Frappato. Both the chops and this wine should be made part of the regular menus. I look forward to our next visit, which will be in less than two weeks."

  • "The food, service and wine list was excellent. Our waiter accommodated us to another table when asked after we realized we were too close to a busy walkway. We definitely will be back again...I think lunch here would be a fun place too. I especailly liked that I could order gluten free pasta...great!"

  • "The Regional Menus are always a hit, and have very good items on them. They always have good seafood risottos, the lamb (when offered) is excellent and the desserts are great. They have the best tiramisu I have had, and the panna cotto is large and yummy."

  • "We've been to this restaurant multiple times for many different occasions, including very special occasions all the way to a casual dinner, etc. We had a large group this time, with lots of different arrival times (unplanned) and the waiter couldn't have been more accommodating. Il Fornaio is THE place to go."
    Dined on 6/4/2014
  • "Always go monthly for the regional food offering. The "Sicily" offering was OK....not one of their best. Unfortunately, I am finding that I do not go to Il Fornio any longer for anything other than their regional dinners as there are so many other Italian restaurants out there in the South Bay area....and I used to go for dinners there before I discovered the regional thing."

  • "For a business lunch, the food and service was excellent."

  • "Il Fornaio is a wonderful dining event. Before my wife and I got married we would always go there on dates. It is always fun to go back and have an anniversary there. The food is always great and the noise level always you to talk but is not boring. The meal (it doesn't matter what you choose, it's always amazing) and the dessert were great. Our server was always around but in a way that doesn't bother you from having a nice conversation. Yummy is all I can say."

  • "food is average, pizza cristina was flat not much taste. Tin Roof pizza so much better. Crust nothing spectacular for an Italian restaurant."

  • "A joy as always. All three of us had the chicken dish on the regional menu and we all loved it. I had the puff pastry as an appetizer and that was a joy as well. We were celebrating my retirement and as usual this was the perfect choice for a special meal. I look forward to our next visit. "

  • "the regional menus are good as well as the regular menu. We often don't try the regular menu, so it was tasty change of pace for us to get appetizers and pasta from the regular menu. Pasta cravings fulfilled! oh, and the wine, too. Good choice fir a easy dinner."

  • "Our waiter basically ignored us when at all possible. We had to ask someone else for bread, he never refilled our water or tea or asked if we needed another beverage, when we asked for the dessert tray we had to pry out of him what the various things were, and he seemed mad at us the whole time. He may have been exhausted at the end of Mother's Day though. "

  • "Always a treat for Mothers Day fare. Lively pastas, terrific fish and a lively Mothers Day crowd. I love sitting near the kitchen counter to see the plates emerge, so many marvelous aromas. Always leave roon for dessert!"

  • "Service was deplorable on a recent Mother's Day.When checking in for our reservation, we were told the wait would be "just a minute" which turned into half an hour. When seated, we were placed in a room that blasted air conditioning, so all at our table were freezing. Each time we inquired about our dinner order, we were told it would be "just a minute."When we noticed that all the diners around us received their orders and were eating dinner, even when we placed our order far in advance of theirs, we called the waiter on it.He told us he "forgot to put in the order" and would give us a complementary glass of wine. This is after being at the restaurant for almost 2 hours!Usually,I like this place, but for a holiday occasion,I would stay away."
