A word from Il Fornaio - Manhattan Beach
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The service staff is always prompt, friendly, professional and helpful. The food is consistently excellent. Il Fornaio is one of my favorite restaurants for ambiance. A nice atmosphere to have a conversation. We especially like to try dishes from the regional specialties. Highly recommend for special occasions with larger groups."

  • "Our server was terrible. I don't think he was interested in us. It took forever to get him to come around to ask us what we wanted to drink. It was forever on everything. The next time I go I will make sure he is not our server."

  • "Food is reliably great. Service is generally excellent, but on this visit was a bit delayed for reasons unknown. Noise level is always difficult due to the layout of the room and the floors."

  • "When I booked the reservation, my guess was that this was a chain restaurant. It is - primarily in California. We had lunch on a Wednesday and the restaurant was not too busy and very close to our hotel in Lawndale. The service was great. I had the capellini which was good. The only issue I really noticed was that the moscato d'asti and the cabernet that we ordered were poured into the same wine glasses - the ones that were sitting on the table when we arrived. I guess I must be a wine snob because I thought pouring wine like that was a little pedestrian. The restaurant reminded me of Bravo! and Macaroni Grill in Oklahoma. There are much better choices around manhattan beach for good food."

  • "We there for a special birthday dinner. Two of our guests could not attend and ordered a bottle of wine with gift card as a surprise for the table. We only found out about it when they called the next day wondering why we had not called to thank them. Their huge disappointment when they found we knew nothing of it. The restaurant charged their credit card for it. Thankfully, they have names and will get it the charge card corrected. We had a great dinner with a great service team. Certainly we do not want to fault them. Special touches - I would be a bit wary."

  • "Took my mother there and they honored request for a table by fireplace. An earlier seating allowed for great conversation before the crowds and music got louder. Although my waiter did have a hard time hearing me. Service was superb with the waiter recommending specials, and accommodated us as we changed our order after the chef himself came to the table to share his recommendations. Even taking mama's hand and acknowledging her specifically. The food is always wonderful and no exception here. The rabbit was delish. We did wait a but for the check but made it feel like Europe- no rushing the dining experience. Bravo!"

  • "I was unbelievably disappointed in the service of this restaurant and would never go back because of it. The sad part is the food is pretty good but they are absolutely missing it on service. Our waitress was ok but the manager of the restaurant was so unfriendly that we even heard tables around us talking about him. If service is important avoid this restaurant at all costs."

  • "Celebrated a friends birthday by having dinner here. We frequent the bar for happy hour and thought we would splurge. The food was fabulous and they surprised the birthday girl with a small chocolate cake-like dessert big enough to share with the others. Our waiter was very attentive in keeping our water glasses full and taking a group photo. We'll be back for sure!"

  • "As always, great food and excellent service. And it's always nice when the servers recognize you, even when you haven't been there in a few months. This restaurant is near LAX airport so, whenever we stay in the area the night before a trip, we always go there for dinner."

  • "We have an Il Fornaio in Irvine but never had made the choice to go before. We found ourselves staying near the Il Fornaio in Manhattan Beach and decided to give it a try. My husband order the Lamb Shank which was a featured special for the evening and it was fabulous. The meat was so tender it just fell off the bone. It had been marinated in a wine sauce and it was unbelievable. It was served with spinach and mashed potatoes and I was jealous that I didn't have more than the few bites he gave me. I had the Cannelloni which was good and my grandson had pasta with plain chicken breast on the side (just the way he ordered it). It wasn't dry; it was perfect. We would all go back and would recommend it. The service was good."

  • "Definitely the noise level is extremely high in your restaurant. It was most difficult to have a decent conversation with the person sitting across the table. However, service and food were great; great bread particuarly the olive bread. Food is pricey; portions adequate."

  • "Even though we had a res they had trouble seating us in a nearly empty room. We were given a lousy table and were treated poorly when we asked to be moved. Hostess and server had attitudes, food wasn't much better. Kale salad was worth ordering. Received a notification from Open Table a day later asking why I didn't keep the res. Maybe she didn't hear me???"

  • "I was very disappointed in the food. We had the Rustichella for the appetizer, the linguini Mare Chiaro and a sole dish. All the dishes seemed to be lacking flavor. We also were not asked if we wanted any parmesan cheese. Not sure what went wrong."

  • "Being in the rich Manhattan Beach enclave area (technically Hawthorne but close enough), this place is usually packed with diners with large disposable incomes and the disinclination to cook at home. Therefore, it's busy almost any day of the week but especially on weekends. Expect overwhelmed host staff and servers during the weekends and slightly better, if inattentive service on other days. Food is pricey but good----wouldn't come here often but for special occasions or to try special regional menu items. Excellent bread. Service is hit or miss and spotty (missing cutlery, dinnerware, slow to bring food out of the kitchen, etc). Being a chain, you're not missing anything by not coming here."

  • "We were admiring the beautiful interior as we waited to be seated (for our reservation), but then were shunted onto the cavernous semi-indoor patio which was much less nice. I wish I had known to ask in advance. The service was sparse but competent, the food was just ok. We were bugged by the fake italian Schtick -- kind of absurd to instruct the mexican hostess and the mexican waiter to throw out little Italianisms even to their hispanic customers. It didn't make us think we were suddenly transported from a strip mall in Manhattan Beach to a quaint family-run restaurant in the Italian countryside."

  • "Had an amazing time at Il Fornaio. Took my girlfriend here for Valentine's day and we both enjoyed the food and the ambiance. The selection of items is great, as well as their wines. Would highly recommend. Thanks for the great food and service."

  • "I was our first time and we really loved the the place & food. Service could've been better but I understand it was valentine's day and they were really busy. Other than that I really recommend this place!"

  • "Having booked this reservation more than two weeks in advance, we ended up right smack in front of the kitchen cooking area.. Usually this is not a problem for me but it was on this special occasion. The ambiance was lacking due to all the activity and noise which is not conductive to a romantic experience on Valentine's Day. The cooks were yelling out loud at times and the servers were running back and forth-all this activity right in front of us. It was crowded, lots of people waiting to be seated and I felt rushed."

  • "Enjoyable evening with excellent service and special menu, including a very chocolate heart-shaped dessert. However the salmon with truffles both my wife and ordered was, in my opinion, disappointing in that the fish was broiled crispy on top. Fortunately the rest of the salmon was not overcooked. The crispy part I think was a bit overcooked and actually tough, leaving the tiny mushroom bits stranded on a cardboard-like raft rather than blending in and enhancing the flavor. The fish was served with a stack of sliced potato interspersed with onion, which my wife didn't care for. The restaurant was featuring recipes of the Umbria region of Italy. Also distracting was a very high noise level in the restaurant. Kitchen is open to dining area."

  • "I've been to Il Fornaio numerous times. It is always superb. This was a Valentine's Day dinner and it was spectacular. Great food, and good wine. Service was a little sluggish but that was due to the high volume of customers. This was expected. Il Fornaio is the perfect place to go for a quick dinner or any special occasion."

  • "This is our favorite restaurant. We go with family to celebrate special occasions like Valentine's Day and our anniversary. We like the regional menus because it offers the cuisine of all of Italy, not just familiar dishes. We learn Italy's food is influenced by its location to other nations and its maritime environment. The staff knows their menu, offers helpful suggestions and are courteous and friendly. We don't feel rushed to leave as soon as we finish. The inside dining area adjacent to the outside courtyard is comfortable and intimate."

  • "the service was great, and the food was good, both as always. Fish was done nicely and not overcooked. Dessert was inhaled by my son, I barely got to taste it. Oops, too slow."

  • "Eight of us got together to celebrate my wife Lucy's birthday and this was the perfect place for it. All of us had dined at this or other Il Fornaios before and some of us are regulars. We had a wonderful time and everybody enjoyed something off the regional menu (Umbria). To make it even better, our friend the chef sent over a pizza for the table as an extra appetizer and my wife also got a special dessert. This was already our favorite restaurant in the LA area and this dinner just reinforced that judgment."
