A word from Il Fornaio - Del Mar
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. • "I would give this place a second chance to go back there. The waiter was great, but it took them way too long to bring our food to us (my girlfriend and I) My Capricciosa pizza was good but a little bit overcooked and cold. She had Pollo Toscano and it was cold too. I hope next time we go back there, the waiter brings our food quickly"

  • "We had a wonderful dining experience; delicious food, beautiful view, good service. One of us had the mixed seafood grill. It was so good! The rest of us had the wild sea bass as part of the "Taste of Basilicata" menu. It was so yummy!"

  • "This is so close to home and we love to go there Friday nights. Love their bread selections. Their food selection is not too varied. Service is good. This time service was not as usual. I am sure we will go back."

  • "We made a reservation on a Saturday night for 7:30 and still ended up waiting for 35 minutes. However the bar was available and once we did finally sit the service was quite prompt. The wine list was expansive and good for a Wine-o such as myself. The food was extremely fresh and good and they even served Boar which reminded me of my trips to Italy. The outside covered patio was very nice and a good respite from the noise inside. Overall great restaurant if you don't mind waiting for a table."

  • "It was really hard to find the place but we found it. The main course was delicious but the Cesar salad was lacking. Lacking in toppings, lacking in size, lacking in overall substance."

  • "My girlfriend and I had a beautiful evening here. The food, service, and ambience were all exemplary."

  • "It's too bad this restaurant is any good since it boasts lovely views and an expansive deck but save your time and your money and go somewhere that has some flavor! Not a single person in our party of 4 liked any portion of their meal. The lobster bisque was watery and not at all thick or rich like a bisque. The cannelloni needed more tomato sauce and although the menu said there was chicken, we couldn't find a single piece of meat in them. The minestrone soup was again watery and lacked any punch or depth. The same can be said for the remainder of the dishes. I wont be going back!"

  • "Went to Il Fornaio for Valentine's Day. The food, service and atmosphere was excellent and we plan on going back to try some of the other items on the menu. Wine is reasonably prices and great view."

  • "We go to Il Fornaio quite often but this is the first time we have gone on Valentine's day. It was obviously busier and more hectic for the staff due to the number of clients there to celebrate their 'romantic' date dinner. Even though it was a little more hectic, I felt the staff handled everything very well and quite professionally. I asked if they had lasagna and, even though it was not on the menu, they did have some prepared and brought it out to me."

  • "Took my family (husband & 2 kids..ages 12 & 14) here for Valentine's Day & it was delicious. My kids ate every scrap off their plates & my son said "best Valentine's Day ever!". Well, worth it!"

  • "We ate here, party of 6, on Valentines and had a special menu for that evening. Would have appreciated knowing this when the reservation was made. Food, as usual, was good, prepared well and presented as expected. Our waiter that evening (no name, never introduced himself) was very average. If the table needed bread or oil/vinegar replaced we had to ask each time. Seemed he never was a part of our table. Bus staff, however, was excellent."

  • "We are regulars at this restaurant. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary this week, but the food was mediocre. The sole meunier was not prepared well and the pasta entrée - penne with vodka sauce was not very tasty. We ordered drinks and dessert also, but the restaurant did not even offer us a complimentary appetizer or dessert since we were celebrating a special occasion. They had always done this in the past. Overall, a disappointing experience."

  • "Even though I had a 6:30pm reservation, our party of 6 were not seated until 7:05pm. We were put in a very small table next to the kitchen and I had a hard time even ordering because it was so noisy. The kitchen was completely overwhelmed and our food came very slowly. We went with my two kids who are usually very patient. But it took us two and half hours to finish dinner and the main course ended up coming around 8:30pm and the fish was cold. We just asked to have the food bagged to go. Not a good experience."

  • "I loved the covered patio. The waitress was excellent and helped us pick good meals. She was super attentive and extremely nice. The hostess or the person who sat us was not very nice. First of all she didn't check our reservation and sat us at the worst table. We couldn't sit where we wanted because she said that table was reserved. It turned out that it wasn't reserved and she offered it to other people who had just walked in. We enjoyed our food and really appreciated the help from our great waitress. Next time, I will make sure to mention which table I want during reservation and not trust the people at the front desk."

  • "Our only complaint about our dinner was that the pasta could have been cooked a little more but the portions were fine, the venison (sauce in particular) was outstanding. Overall, another outstanding option. What I like best about this restaurant is that they have a Festa Regionale, featuring a different region in Italy for two weeks each month. This month it is Trentino & Alto Adige while next month is Umbria. And they give you a free gift like a shopping bag or olive oil."

  • "They need to limit the menu to what they make well. Too many items And poorly presented and prepared. Salad wad good. That was it Gnocchi was tasteless with rabbit sauce that had tons of bones Venison was so dry. Tasted like chalk"

  • "We do this 6 month tour of italy every year, Jan - June. The only reason we don't do it july-dec is the traffic is a mess during the summer months. Love the restaurant, great food, good wine, excellent view of the ocean from the covered patio."

  • "Just sit them facing the sea on the balcony of the Del Mar Il Fornaio in late December at lunchtime. The food and wine is great, and you can casually point out the occasional spouts of the California Grey whales that have begun to migrate."

  • "We have been going to Il Fornaio for our Christmas Eve dinner for 14 years. And this will be our last. The menu seemed tired and uninspired. The food was served lukewarm. When they ran out of the ONLY vegetarian entree (I'm a vegetarian) they replaced it with a pasta dish that contained beef sausage. Seriously?? The service was good though the servers seemed rushed and harried. When we ordered coffee with our dessert the tall male bus person/server told us that "coffee isn't good for you." What??!! I know it's Christmas Eve but everyone in my family worked all day, too. This used to be a cozy cheerful sparkly place to dine. So sorry. Next year we will be dining somewhere else."

  • "I found the restaurant on Yelp! And decided to give it a try. I had reservations for 5 at 7:00 PM on Monday night. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were seated right away. The menu was great, with a good wine list. I would say the only negative thug about our experience is that I felt pressured to order. Other than that it was a nice place, with good food and a good wine list. I can see us going back just for the heck of it."

  • "The calamari was "fishy" and not edible. The salads were "thrown together " And either overdressed or not dressed at all . The pasta and veal dishes were Cold . Very disappointing as Il Fornaio at other locations has been outstanding"

  • "I brought my newly wed bride here for our honeymoon and the service was incredible!! Our waitress was amazing. She offered us free desert because it was our honeymoon and was extremely helpful. She found fun things for us to do while we stayed here and offered advice on the food choices. The food was incredible and the view was amazing. Plus there is an outdoor heated patio that looks over the ocean. Great experience!!!"

  • "....to have Il Fornaio right down the hill from us. Not only have we eaten there at least monthly during the past 25 years, but we're greeted by the aroma of their delicious bread baking whenever we walk down there."

  • "Wonderful meal and great service, as always. There was a private event on the patio and the noise level was higher than usual. I had a great Tuscan fish stew, something like cioppino, that was heavenly."

  • "Food was not that great. Calamari appetizer is a very small portion. Boar meatball appetizer so small-can hardly find a little meatball not enough to share. Ravioli and cannelloni are nothing special. Lasagna was good..Tiramisu great..Our favorite was the bread basket. Appetizer goat cheese pizza..hardly had any topping.Great atmosphere fun outdoor area. Nice staff."

  • "Overall, it was a nice restaurant with a gorgeous view to the ocean. Although we dined ay the evening, I am very familiar with the area, I can imagine the ocean view during the daytime. The food was average, nothing very special. The service was adequate, our waiter is a bit absent-minded but giving it was a busy night, it is kinda of expected. Will I go back for the food? I probably would not given the price and the food was average. Will I go back for the view? "Absolutely"."
