Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience.   • "In a restaurant of this caliber the waiter, servers and busboys should be taught serving etiquette. Very disappointed when food was passed and picked up over a guest not once but several times. There was access to all the guests to serve or pick up from the right or left. That was the frustrating part. When you go to a nice restaurant this should be part of the training. It really is a no brainier. It is also an easy fix. I hope they correct this immediately."

  • "Coronado's Il Fornaio is one of our favorite restaurants. We've been going regularly for the 10 years we've lived on Coronado. We've never had a bad meal and the monthly Festa Regionale is always outstanding. The Management is friendly and concerned and the wait-staff excellent. If you've been to Il Fornaio in other cities and been disappointed as we have you should still try the Coronado one because it will not disappoint you. The Sunday brunch is very good and we've taken young kids there a few times - it's a go-to place if our kids and grandkids descend on us at weekends."

  • "My wife and I choose various fine dining "foodie" type places around town anywhere from advertisements, to simple word of mouth, for special occasions. Il Fornaio fell no short of a great overall experience. Our server, Giovanni, was very attentive to our dining pace and the feel of the restaurant from when you just walk in to see the wood burning stoves make a great impression of the experience ahead. Servings were generous and flavors were that of Italian consistency. We will definitely be dining with them again in the future!"

  • "Everything was delicious with one exception - the lasagna (!) noodles disappeared into the rest of the dish. The good sauce and cheesy richness weren't accompanied by the tooth I like in the noodles. Wife and friends' dishes were all good (butternut ravioli, penne vodka, seafood pasta, and my caprese salad). View is beautiful across the bay, service was excellent, wine list was OK, ricotta cheesecake desert was excellent. Experience is improved now because you can find a parking place! There's a parking gate, but the restaurant validates and you get three hours for free, so the parking charge means dog-walkers and window shoppers park somewhere else, and the three hours free is plenty to eat and walk around a bit afterwards if you want."

  • "We had reservations. Dining room was not busy. We were seated immediately and we were served water. after 15 minutes asked to be served drinks & wanted to see our waiter. He had been ignoring us by setting an empty table across from us. The food finally arrived. It was good but the filling for the ravioli was inadequate. For the price of good home made ravioli, they should have filled the ravioli to look a bit more robust. My lasagna was recommended by the snotty waiter. It did not resemble anything close to a traditional lasagna. Very unusual plate but not bad tasting. Four adults ate and only three of us drank a full bottle of chianti (house brand) $35 and two beers. Total dinner tab with one appetizer & 3 desserts $207 with tip."

Massimo was on top of everything, attentive and punctual up until the entre. For some reason the entre took a longer than average time. He checked on our entres a couple of times for us."

  • "The restaurant had beautiful views of the San Diego skyline, the food that day was not of the best quality. My wife and I have been celebrating our anniversary at II Fornaio for years. However, this last past week we were heart broken on the quality of the food. The food quality had gone down so much that my wife recommended we find a new place to celebrate our anniversary. The service was slower than usual but the food was the worst part of the evening. The green and potatoes were over cooked along with the pasta, even the steak was dye. It was not their greatest showing, I hope it was just a one time event."

  • "On a friend's recommendation, I booked this restaurant for an anniversary celebration. I requested a seat with a few and we were seated on the patio that had great views of the San Diego Skyline and the almost full moon. We were there on a Saturday night and did get seated quickly since we had reservations. It was a busy night and the service was a bit slow though the servers were very friendly. The noise level on the patio wasn't bad but I did notice that it is pretty noisy in the main dining room. It would have been difficult to have a conversation. The menu was varied with lots of choices. The food was very good but I wouldn't give it an outstanding. I would go again and I would definitely plan on making reservations."

  • "My husband and I came in with our group after our beach wedding. I had never been before and have been dying to feature it on my food blog, but my wedding day was more special. We were able to bring a cake (though there is a cutting fee $2.50 per person) and we were also able to have our first cut together. The staff was more than accommodating four our party and there didn't seem to be an issue for the separate checks for our attendees. I am so glad I chose Il Fornaio as our dinner location after our wedding. The ambiance was wonderful. The other patrons were kind and wished us well. The scenery of downtown San Diego at night was breathtaking. A better thing, my son ate pasta (he always orders pizza) and he enjoyed it :)"

  • "The views from this venue of downtown San Diego and the harbor are magnificent. The table service given to us got off to a great start. Our server was very professional and efficient. After our food was served, the service flopped like a souffle! Our server just disappeared and we had to resort to wild hand signals as we sought some sort of assistance.The food was passable. I personally thought that it was expensive, given the small quantity of seafood offered in the dish that I had ordered. Overall, it was a pleasant enough dining experience, but when the server disappears completely and one is left to hand gestures and assistance from other staff members, it sadly leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth!"

  • "We took two foodie guests from out of town to Saturday brunch. The place was not crowded at 1130. Very disappointed in their vaunted crab cakes Benedict as all of our eggs were poached way too long. The yolks were not at all runny. The server ( very good) tried to make it right by bringing us some additional properly cooked eggs, and insisted that we enjoy a compted dessert plate (appreciated..and very good). The restaurant has very nice decor, ample parking ( free the 1st hour, $1.00 for the second hr), and a killer view of the city from its water-side Coronado location. One guest ordered the seabass and stated it was excellent. We will probably return because we think that the "eggsperience" was a fluke."

  • "This is a lovely place to go to eat, wonderful food, amazing location on the water's edge and views of San Diego. It is big and busy but they are so organised and efficient that is rarely noticed because they make you feel like you are in a smaller neighborhood Italian bistro. The food choices are great, the service amazing, polite and not rushed, and the ambiance perfect. Love this restaurant and am making it my go to place when in San Diego :)"

  • "Through friends had heard about the Festa Regionale dinners at Il Fornaio. As we had out-of-town company, we wanted to treat them to an elegant Italian dinner in Coronado so as to showcase our beautiful city, harbor and downtown San Diego. Il Fornaio was the perfect place. We chose from the Basillicata menu, most of us ordering something different, and each appetizer and entrée was delicious and well presented. I believe our server was Amy?, who provided us with excellent service and special attention. Our relatives were quite impressed with the ambiance of the restaurant, the quality of the food and the great views. We had drinks before dinner and the hostess was very cordial and efficient - nice bar atmosphere."

  • "This is the second time at this restaurant that I have had to get out of my seat, hunt down my waiter, and demand that he serve me the food that I ordered. I thought the first time was excusable since the restaurant was busy and we had theater tickets within an hour. This time was on a Monday evening, and the restaurant was not busy. We were served our first two courses, but the main entree was not served for over an hour. In fact, the bus waiter took our plates and silverware since he thought we were done. Other tables who arrived after us, left 30 minutes before were were finally served our main meal. The sea bass was rubber-like and must have been frozen and then cooked way too long."
