Diner Reviews
  • "The main thing to know here is that the service was excellent. Rod and Barbara were super fun and provided excellent service. This place is legit. "

  • "Il Fornaio in Carmel has a beautiful roof-top terrace which on a nice day is a wonderful place for Lunch. Sitting outside in the sun, elevated from the tourists strolling along Ocean Avenue provides a peaceful recess. Food was average, but one would come here for the ambiance and being outdoors. Pet Friendly, (outdoor terrace) waitstaff was pleasant and attentive and I would go back - I would think that it's a great place for an afternoon drink..and we had appetizers which was just what we wanted. Fried calamari was very good, hit the spot! With a glass of wine and we were very happy."

  • "We were surprised how wonderful the foods of Pulia were. It is a very poor region of Italy, yet there was plenty of variety and excellent dishes. The pastas, as in every regional dinner, were the best. Many dishes used seafood and our main dish was a mixed grill with absolutely delicious octopus and prawns that looked like small lobsters. The grilling was simple and it seemed only used very good local olive oil and lemon juice, salt and pepper. With such excellent fish cooked quickly, you don't need more. The regional festivals that Il Fornaio has throughout the year are a splendid way to learn about the cuisines and wines of the various regions of Italy at a very reasonable cost. I highly recommend them."

  • "We were seated at the owners table and were surprised to hear that we would receive complementary appetizer, pasta dish and dessert! The waitstaff were all very attentive, food was well prepared. An overall treat. Cathe powers"

  • "The food and service could not have been any better from when we first walked in and was greeted by the Hostess!"

  • "I requested a specific area in the restaurant to be seated and was advised that I would be seated at a table in the area when the previous guests departed. We waited in the bar. After 20 minutes I returned to the Maitre'D who looked shell shocked. She had given away my table to guests that arrived after my party. We sat in another area that I specificlly did not want to sit it."

  • "My third time there, love the ambiance and the wine list!"

  • "Bad service, we were rushed though our meal, our waiter took our order, then never came back to see if we needed or wanted anything else. The food was okay, but not worth it with the service we had."

  • "My favorite Italian restaurant in one of my favorite towns. The service and atmosphere is excellent. I always order something a little different and have never been disappointed. They also do their own baking and make delicious rolls and breads. I would go just for bread and some fresh sweet butter. Anytime we are near Carmel I insist that we return for dinner."

  • "I chose to spend my birthday here this week. I am so happy that I did. I loved the atmosphere, the table , the food, and the service. I even received a complimentary dessert...my favorite, bread pudding! I highly recommend this place. When we visit Carmel next year, we will eat here again."

  • "Our server seemed inconvenienced that we were there. He also kept going back to kitchen and eating during his shift. Maybe that is allowed, but it was very unprofessional."

  • "10 Best Friends spent the weekend In Carmel. Il Fornaio was PURRFECT for our lively group. Fun ambience, we did not feel uncomfortable being loud, as is inescapable with so many of us in one place, and yet we could hear each other speaking in normal conversation without needing to shout, great acoustics. Our server was happy to divide our bill which made paying easier. Full bar and nice wine list. YUMMY food and reasonable prices (Carmel is generally very pricey, we were glad to find a place that didn't charge an arm and a leg). DEFINITELY recommend this restaurant."

  • "I hadn't been to Il Fornaio in quite a few years. The food was excellent, but I thought the service could be better. I felt a little ignored. They had a good Italian wine list and specials. The food is excellent there."

  • "We've had some very special dinners here. It's consistently warm and engaging with locals perfectly blended with tourists. We've only had the best waitstaff to compliment the always special food. Every detail is wonderful here."

  • "A great place for a Sunday dinner with a group of friend. Not a lot of foot traffic which made the dining experience enjoyable. Everyone at the table could actually hear each other. You can't beat Carmel for a leisurely evening and great conversation. Il Fornaio offers both and let's not forget the fantastic food. They didn't miss a beat..."

  • "Il Fornaio's well light, highly energetic main room takes one to a bygone era of elegance. The service, the varied menus, and the great wines seal the deal."

  • "It was Il Fornaio, consistent, good food and decent service. There really is not a lot to be wowed by a chain, unfortunately. I do like it, but nothing that jumps up and grabs you to make be overly impressed."

  • "A good meal, not necessarily fancy. Food is wholesome and cooked to order. Service fast and polite. A very noisy restaurant, especially when seated near the bar."

  • "Food and ambience were very good. Service was very good and relatively fast. We were headed to the theatre afterwards and needed to be served in a timely fashion. Overall, we had a delightful dining experience."

  • "I've been there several times and I've enjoyed it everytime. This time We were there for Valentine's day and enjoyed the Great Food and excellent service."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "We've had better meals for half the price and the portions on the seafood combo plate were small, over cooked and flavorless. I've cooked better meals at home myself. I guess I shouldn't have had high expectations for a $100 meal with mediocre wine at $15 a glass. The other annoying element was the loud, crude, and obnoxious guest that evening in close proximity to our table even though the resturant was mostly empty on a Monday night. Defiantly will not waste my money here again."

  • "Even though they were busy, the service was prompt and the food was excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable experience!"

  • "We enjoy every Festa Regionale series and try to attend every month. Last month, the food was that of Trentino, and the meal was one of the best I can remember. This time, it was Umbria, a region we have visited, but the choices this time were not very good. The two main dishes, one of them duck and the other lamb, were sub par and flat. As usual, the pastas were the best part of the meals. However, we will continue to come because these meals are more often than not wonderful."

  • "Always have dinner at Il Fornaio on our first night in Carmel. We had a fun evening and it was nice that it was not as crowded as it usually is. Our waiter was great....very attentive, food good. We will be back!"

  • "What a wonderful dinner I had for my birthday celebration. Everyone from the Hostess to the General Manager gave great service and attention to our table. I am a local and frequent there often and this time it was for a special occasion. Highly recommend this restaurant! Try the Linguini Mare - FANTASTICO!"

  • "As always the service was friendly and great with the best pasta in town. We love the late night dining with its relaxed atmosphere and coziness. We always return with friends."

  • "This was our first visit and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and the service outstanding. The layout provides for a warm, open feeling. You have to try the smoked salmon and goat cheese on flat bread appetizer. I would come back just for this if nothing else!"

  • "IL Fornaio's was a nice place that food lacked a little bit. The wine was very good and the ravilois and salad was okay. There are better places in Carmel to eat. This place was recommended by some friends but I don't know if I would go back"

  • "We have eaten here a few times every year and have had some great experiences. We had dinner here twice over the New Year holiday and called in for a light lunch a couple of times. It seems to be losing its crown as the place to eat casually and we had better experiences in other venues. The pizzas were sad, the service was slow..... and what is it about why they only seem to have two of the wines available from the list? However, the calamari at one lunch was great - crispy frying and a mix of rings and tentacles ..... Great!"

  • "Last min reservation. Took forever to get seated but pleased with the food..very quiet night but the service was awful.. they didn't great me or have me seated and 5 he place was empty only 4 tables occupied. ."

  • "We had a 1pm reservation. Two tables were occupied when we walked in. The hostess ignored us and seated groups without reservations who arrived after us. We waited over 20min's to order. By now, 3/4 of the restaurant was filled. We stood up to leave and the waitress convinced us that, although the restaurant sent home 1/2 of the kitchen staff and she was the only waitress it would be wonderful. We should have left. Another 40 min's before food arrived. My pasta was cold. My sons pizza was burned to a crisp and inedible. The garlic in a seafood salad looked like pieces of wood-ash. The waitress worked hard. We lived in Seattle for years and loved Il Fornaio. We were thrilled to discover one near our new home. Sadly, we won't be going back."

  • "always enjoy the holidays by the bay - but this time after FAB meal day before-- sadly disappointed - dislike when u wind up with 3-4 different servers - food was not very exciting - bland -and after walking the town.. know I will try other locations next time.."

  • "After a lovely hike at Point Lobos, we had planned a late lunch. Arrived to find no one at the hostess station, and when she did appear it was clear there was trouble ahead. There was no greeting to my guest and I as the hostess began a conversation with a senior staff member about the day's difficulties. Some items on the menu were not available, and the menu was truncated. The bottle of white wine we ordered was delivered unchilled and without an ice bucket. The dressing on the salmon salad was not to my liking as it was too fussy--simplicity is always best. The best things about the meal were the bread and the dessert (gelato with fresh hot espresso to pour over the top!). Our waitress tried hard but could not overcome."

  • "As it was a holiday we booked a table for dinner on 31 Dec and 1 Jan well in advance and also had lunch both days at the bar. This was not our first visit . As before, they didn't have the first 4 wines we selected (what is the problem!) but the small selection available was adequate. Food is OK . Service was slow ...but it was busy. Good ambiance as it is a Carmel classic for return visitors. Suspect there are better options we should explore when Carmel is less busy."

  • "We have New Year's Eve dinner here every year. We love the food the atmosphere and the service."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "We went on New Years Eve. The waitress while attentive was having to apologize for one dish that was only warm and having to bring the whole order at once. She communicated a sense of helplessness. They did the right thing and did not charge for the warmr dish. The milieu is very pleasant. The drinks and dessert are excellent. Good distance between tables. Upscale look. Normally the food and service is excellent but not this evening. The location in the Pine Inn on Ocean Avenue in Carmel by the Sea is historic."

  • "One of our favorite local restaurants, especially for happy hour, and we joined 3 other couples for a light dinner prior to our New Years Eve outing. Nice special menu for the evening, with tasty seafood and pasta dishes. Decent wine selections, and good desserts. Fun atmosphere and great service as usual from Ramoan."
