Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed our dining experience the food was good the homemade pasta was really good. Their house wine was surprisingly very good. The service could of been better for the restaurant. Don't know if he was new because they other waitstaff was noticeably better. Overall good food but not the best Italian food I've ever had."

  • "I would have given 5 stars were it not for the fact we make a special request to be somewhere relatively private (as private as an Italian restaurant can be) since it was date night for my wife and I. I was disappointed when the hostess casually placed us in the table right next to the main entrance and hostess stand where there were no less than 10-12 people, kids etc. standing where they could while they waited for their table. It was distracting and anything but romantic. I suggest calling if you have a special request. Once seated, we enjoyed the food and the wait staff was very friendly. We even received a visit from the manager asking about our meal. Only one small hiccup in service. I would still highly recommend."

  • "This spis the second time we have been here and the food continues to excel. Wine list is limited but good. Special heirloom salad was imaginative (even though they forgot the olives which they later confessed to). Although my wife's pasta dish was lukewarm when received it was quickly picked up and remade-hot. The veal scallopine with artichokes and lemon was exceptionally well prepared and very memorable. The noise level can be deafening but we got the little side room that was a bit more muted. Will definitely be coming back."

  • "Good food, good service, good location. My daughter said it was her best meal on vacation."

  • "Great dinner here as usual. It is one of our favorites when we go to Carmel. We always have great food that is very tasty and the bread is wonderful. Service is always attentive."

  • "As this restaurant is located within an old hotel, a lot of the guests were in the dining room. We had the salmon frittata and it was good, though a bit dry."

  • "Your Sicilian menu looked inviting this past Sunday but we were disappointed to find out that at 7:00 pm (normal dinner hour) you were already out of several items which came as a surprise on Father's Day. When my brother is in town, he enjoys drinks from your bar which has an awesome ambience. However, your bartenders do not know how to make good cocktail drinks. We have ordered both lemon drop martinis and whiskey sours but they are better at other restaurants in Carmel. So I just wish your drinks would match your very cozy and elegant décor with French windows. We also love your tagliatelle but wish the portion is a little bit bigger (even your large portion is small but your small portion went from small to minuscule)."

  • "We have dine at other Il Fornaio's and have enjoyed them. We thought this would be a good bet in Carmel, but we were actually more pleasantly surprised. I had the beef tenderloin and it was so tender and tasty. It is not often I have beef this tender, I would definitely recommend it. My daughter had the giant shrimp and they were GIANT, almost like lobsters. The pastas were also very good. Overall a very nice dining experience and it was reasonable considering the food quality. Service was also very attentive. I recommend this Il Fornaio."

  • "I've been customer of Ilfernaio for years. However this particular location has the worst food I've ever had. We had a large party and everyone was extreme dissatisfied with their meal. Bransini fish in particular was slacking in heavy sauce and was just not good. I've had this fish prepared many times before and it was fantastic at other places. Anyway skip this one. There are better choices in town."

  • "From the minute we stepped into the place, it was disappointing. The greeters, the crowed table- we had 6 in our party and could barely put our arms up to eat. Too small of a table. We sat in the aisle and crowds walked by. The doors open blew in cold air on our table, we couldnt hear each other talk. Our server was average at best, and the food good, but not exceptional amd we usually have better everything, which is why we wanted to go there. It was a special evening for my son, which I mentioned making the reservations and there was no mention of that either. Not even an olive or toast or recognition. "

  • "Seated near the door that goes directly to the patio is not the best. Service was good especially for kids. The chicken was very tasty and big servings. "

  • "A strong player in the crowded field of Carmel restaurants. Pleasant setting and friendly efficient service. Winners include the ravoli, sea bass and gelato. Great location within walking distance of many inns and hotels."

  • "Have always enjoyed the food and service. Sometimes things don't work out the way they should, but if you speak up, they will usually take care of it. Went on our honeymoon 19 years ago, and every couple of months since."

  • "We had reservations for a late lunch here after my husband had finished his round of golf. The restaurant was quiet and the hostess very friendly upon our arrival. My husband and I both had the beef carpaccio for an appetizer. It was delicious. My handmade pasta and traditional meat sauce was perfect. The pasta dish my husband chose was light and flavorful (with chicken, broccoli and sun dried tomatoes). We shared our dishes with each other so we could experience each dish. On our next visit to Carmel, we will definitely make Il Fornaio a part of our plans! "

  • "Of all the regional foods, this was one of the less interesting. The region produces the Parmigiana cheese and Prosciuto ham, both woderful products, but the food is rather bland. We are looking forward to next month's Sicily. That is much more exciting. "

  • "We always like to have cocktails and dinner at Il Fornaio at least once during our stays at the Pine Inn. We appreciate the discount and the food and drinks are always top notch. "

  • "As usual Il Fornaio was excellent. We sat at the bar across from the main cooking area, our favorite. Food and service were excellent and the cooking show was great as always. Recommend these seats to those wanting a cooking experience with dinner and good service. And no waiting for a table."

  • "I've been to Il Fornaio and even am a Passport Member. I love the place and will always come back because I know the food and service are fantastic. Mother's Day however, this year, was unbelievably disastrous. We arrived at 10:57 for our 11am reservation. We were seated promptly. The waiter got our drink orders immediately. But when he took our brunch orders, the food didn't come out for 1hr. By the time we ate, it was 12:10. We asked for bread and were never served it. We asked for refills on the Mimosas (which we paid for) and they sat at the bar for 10 minutes before being served to us. Not sure what happened this time around... Will go again, but severely disappointed this time, especially on such a special day..."

  • "Il Fornaio Carmel is excellent. What a great experience. The food was truly amazing. They went out of their way to accommodate our dietary restrictions without any issues. They were so nice and inviting and made my wife and I and our guest feel at home. The restaurant was packed, but in a good way where it was very lively and you could still hold a conversation. Both the general manager and chef made a visit to our table to make sure everything was okay, it was actually more than okay. We left there very, very happy. Note: our server Rod did a really great job all night. He deserves a little extra praise."

  • "Everything was terrible; we had not eaten there before. so lots were "on the house" --- which were all awful. Then we had pastas---mine had absolutely NO flavor, my wife's was a little better; dessert---which was "on the house"---and therefore we had no choice---was extra, extra sweet. All in all, we'll NOT go back again, and no one else should, either!"

  • "We wanted a special dinner for our anniversary stay in Carmel. Friends had recommended Il Fornario and we were not disappointed. We were treated to special taste treats since we were first time visitors. Our meal was delicious from beginning to end. Great lasagna and pastas. Our waiter was attentive and helpful. A must stop in Carmel!"

  • "As a local, I've eaten at this restaurant on numerous occasions, and each time, it was a disappointment. This time, a friend suggested I try it for Easter brunch. As we arrived, the staff was friendly and pleasant. We were seated immediately and the menu looked good. To make a long story short, we all ordered different egg dishes and every one was over cooked, bland and absolutely horrible. My eggs were so inedible that I had to request poached ones to ensure they wouldn't be overcooked. They were still gross. My husband and I actually left hungry. I will never, I repeat NEVER return to this restaurant. It's pretty, but the food is awful."

  • "Il Fornaio in Carmel has a beautiful roof-top terrace which on a nice day is a wonderful place for Lunch. Sitting outside in the sun, elevated from the tourists strolling along Ocean Avenue provides a peaceful recess. Food was average, but one would come here for the ambiance and being outdoors. Pet Friendly, (outdoor terrace) waitstaff was pleasant and attentive and I would go back - I would think that it's a great place for an afternoon drink..and we had appetizers which was just what we wanted. Fried calamari was very good, hit the spot! With a glass of wine and we were very happy."

  • "We were surprised how wonderful the foods of Pulia were. It is a very poor region of Italy, yet there was plenty of variety and excellent dishes. The pastas, as in every regional dinner, were the best. Many dishes used seafood and our main dish was a mixed grill with absolutely delicious octopus and prawns that looked like small lobsters. The grilling was simple and it seemed only used very good local olive oil and lemon juice, salt and pepper. With such excellent fish cooked quickly, you don't need more. The regional festivals that Il Fornaio has throughout the year are a splendid way to learn about the cuisines and wines of the various regions of Italy at a very reasonable cost. I highly recommend them."

  • "I requested a specific area in the restaurant to be seated and was advised that I would be seated at a table in the area when the previous guests departed. We waited in the bar. After 20 minutes I returned to the Maitre'D who looked shell shocked. She had given away my table to guests that arrived after my party. We sat in another area that I specificlly did not want to sit it."

  • "Bad service, we were rushed though our meal, our waiter took our order, then never came back to see if we needed or wanted anything else. The food was okay, but not worth it with the service we had."

  • "My favorite Italian restaurant in one of my favorite towns. The service and atmosphere is excellent. I always order something a little different and have never been disappointed. They also do their own baking and make delicious rolls and breads. I would go just for bread and some fresh sweet butter. Anytime we are near Carmel I insist that we return for dinner."

  • "I chose to spend my birthday here this week. I am so happy that I did. I loved the atmosphere, the table , the food, and the service. I even received a complimentary dessert...my favorite, bread pudding! I highly recommend this place. When we visit Carmel next year, we will eat here again."
