  • "We could not have chosen a more enjoyable restaurant for a special occasion. First off, I must applaud the splendid service of our wait person, Andrea R. The restaurant would do well to keep her and advance her at all costs! The food was very delicious with an outstanding presentation. I had the special salmon with grilled vegetables, done to perfection. The birthday had pasta with assorted fish which she said was the best she had ever had. We finished off with three deserts that left us "licking the plates". Hats off to the crew at Il Fornaio!!!"

  • "We held a business lunch with four people and service was very poor. We could barely hear or understand our waitress and the service she provided was poor. We had to request refills of water and two in our party had pasta and we had to request cheese. Restaurant was not overly busy, but waitress may have been relatively new."

On two occasions, the manager did not resolve our complaints regarding over charges and the restaurant main office stepped in to resolve the situations. Hopefully, all goes well for future customers.   • "I've been to Il Fornaio in SF and really enjoyed the dining experience. However, the Burlingame experience was much different. Although our waiter was very friendly he was not very attentive (never refilled our beverage glasses, never refilled our bread basket although said he would immediately, slow bringing our dessert menu after we asked for it). I was very disappointed that my entree was not hot and this was probably because it sat for a while before being brought to the table. My husband's entree was also not hot. I will probably give restaurant another change just to see if it was an off day for them."

  • "They were very busy (as they usually are on a Saturday night), so the service was hectic/spotty. For the party of 22, we had only one waitress, which had she not had a few other tables in various locations of the restaurant, wouldn't be a problem. However, a few times during the service, even the other staff realized that we did not have timely service, so other staff members pitched in and corrected the situation. Otherwise, very accomodating and courteous service. The food is good (i don't think, people go here exclusively for food), but the combination of location, ambiance, and appropriate pricing, makes this place a good dining option. The noise level is high, so not very good for romantic dinners. Very kid-friendly."

  • "We have been many times. This is the first time we had a horrible wait person. He was rude from the start. He tried to rush us thru every thing. He kept pushing to order. Then when we did he insisted on taking our appetizer and entree at the same time so he could put them in at the same time . He kept slamming the drawer behind him to the side of our table. I would.never and I repeat never have him again. He ruined a night we had planned with friends we had not seen in a long tome. What a shame for someone like this to work at your restaurant. What a larger shame we had to have him!!!"

  • "We had booked well ahead a "day after" Fathers Day dinner celebration for 6 and had requested a table by the window. Upon arrival we were "greeted" by an unsmiling hostess. She curtly told us to "hold on". When she finally looked at us again I gave our name and reminded her of my request. She rudely informed me that we had a table in another location. When I expressed my disappointment she shrugged and spoke in a condescending and dismissive voice. There was no "I'm sorry, you should have been informed...", or perhaps "how about this nice round over near the window". Even though the service was five star and the food terrific, we will only patronize the Palo Alto location in the future. My son and daughter-in-law were flabbergasted."

  • "We've had great experiences there, but this time we had mediocre service. Firstly, we had a 4 p.m. reservation made well in advance and the restaurant was fairly empty, but they tried to put us away from the main room, to a corner room that was temperature and atmosphere cold. Secondly, the servers seemed overworked and exhausted. Attitude was low energy and sarcastic with rolling of eyes after responding to our inquiries. The server was unable to hear and/or understand one of our guests' question, and didn't make any effort to understand, but seemed to be annoyed with taking our table orders: drink and food. It was definitely what we did not expect."

It was so noisy that it was difficult to hear the people at our table talk to me. I assume it is not just the crowd of people at the restaurant, but the acoustics in the design. The noise level is my one big objection to coming here. In a way, I don't really know why I keep coming back -- maybe it's because my wife likes the place."

  • "THE spinach salad ordered today was perhaps the most unpleasant dish of recent experience. The spinach was flabby, the dressing underseasoned, the bacon minimal. The flatbread was equally poor. The crust, if one might call it that was also flabby and soggy except for perhaps the first quarter inch around the edge. Cheese bland, tomato unskinned, so that each time one tried to bite the tomato in half the entire tomato came off the flatbread and dangled from one's mouth. The waitperson was very kind and took the flatbread off our bill - which we had NOT asked for, nor did we expect. The Burlingame Il Fornaio has the poorest quality of any one of this usually fairly good chain. Good for the waitstaff for making the meal pleasant at least."

  • "We normally eat the Festa Regionale menus at the Carmel Il Fornaio, but when we go to San Francisco, we always stop at the Burlingame Il Fornaio. We had a lovely Sunday lunch there: an extremely good pizza and chianti wine. The bread and absolutely delicious olive oil and Balsamic vinegar were almost enough for a meal. Always excellent. The regular menu is inspired!"
