However, Il Fornaio in Italian means "The Baker". The quality of the bread was for many years not only superb, but award winning in France. Recently, all that changed when management decided to close its Northern California bakery and ship baked goods pre-frozen from Southern California to its restaurants. What a pity and a downright shame presumably in the name of cost cutting -- to go from worldwide award winning baked goods emblematic of its name to a bread assortment now being served that is well below par with fast food restaurants and local sub shops. We received a special service package that included a number of complimentary items. Dalton, the Manager was welcoming and saw that our service and food was first class. Their bread is, of course, so wonderful and comes to the table hot. Dishes we had were all very good - carpaccio, beet salad [though a bit overdressed], salmon [we asked for medium rare but it came out medium, it wasn't dry but it wasn't as moist as we wanted], seafood risotto [regional dish] was to die for! [would order again!], and my husband loved his seafood mix grill [another regional special]. The chocolate almond cake dessert with salted caramel ice cream was to die for. I like my coffee really hot. It was just nearly hot. Service was very good. Waiter wasn't the best. Wine list is really over the top as far as expensive. We both wanted a glass of "house" cabernet. The waiter claimed they did not have any "house' wine, which we found unusual. We arrived half hour early due to my son's flight coming in early at SFO. The selections were broad enough to meet everyone's needs and wants. Nothing was so special that it stood out, but my experience is that big groups present challenges for restaurants and we never experienced even a hiccup. All the food was presented timely, and hot meals were served hot and cold salads served cold.
The waitperson picked out an assortment of cookies from the front counter for our dessert. The Pennoni alla Vodka was perfect. The Moscato d'Asti was a very balanced sweet wine that seemed to complement everything. From the moment we arrived and were very courteously and quickly escorted to our table with a big, and warm smile by
one of the hostesses we felt the energy and desire of the staff to make a difference.
Were in previous occasions we may have a had hard time getting a second cup of coffee or a refill,
that was not the case with Darlene that made sure we had everything we needed while discretely anticipating
