Went with a friend visiting LA, wanted quiet place for a long talk. We were seated in a cozy booth next to the fireplace. Dinner was perfect: the grilled pork chop was the tenderest-best I have ever eaten; yellowtail crudo, lamb meatballs both wonderful. Interesting dessert-- olive oil cake with fresh figs. (Would not order raw beet salad again, somewhat harsh.) Service very pleasant, friendly but restrained.

The takeover of Orso and the conversion to Il Covo is nicely done. Lots of nooks and crannies, a fireplace and very good food. Portions are on small side so if you are used to eating only a main course, you'll will likely want to order a starter or at least share one. We will definitely be back!

Love this place for the food, service and ambiance. However, the only thing I can suggest is that the choice of music being played during dinner hour be changed. I go to a restaurant to enjoy the meal and conversation with friends and family. It is hard to hear over the loud music and the style of music is not appropriate. I am a retired rock musician and I enjoy the music played at the restaurant BUT there is a time and place to play vintage rock and roll, etc. and in my opinion it is not during dinner hour. This is not the only restaurant in LA to do this and I do not understand whey the music choice is so obtuse with the rest of the restaurant experience.

The restaurant was very beautiful, particular the patio. All the wait staff and servers were very friendly and accommodating. It felt, however that our server, while friendly was a bit frazzled and a lot of the small touches fell through the cracks....i.e., no bread plates, a long time to get his attention, etc. Alll in all, a nice dining experience, but noisy on the patio. Inside it was quiet and romantic. The appetizers were diverse and very good.

  • Pretty Patio but Fortissimo Friday
    RichrVIP
    Dined on 8/3/2012
One of the prettiest patios in LA, but he noise level on Friday night was the loudest I've ever experienced in an outdoor restaurant area. I've eaten here during the week and the entire experience was different. During the week you could talk to the people next to you without screaming; the entire non-weekend dining episode was quite enjoyable. The extreme noise made Friday night dining very unpleasant.

Have spent wedding anniversary at Il Covo, spent last New Years Eve there, and last weekend took my best friend there for her birthday. Everything top notch, from service, cocktails, food, ambiance, etc. Made new friends with the bartender, Jeff, who was amazing, creating a new cocktail just for me! (and it was fantastic). We had a loverly evening, and Il Covo continues to be on our "go to" list. Thanks!

So gorgeous but so disappointing. They cleverly have removed the few good dishes we liked. They seem to take pride in having a rapid turnover of their menu, as opposed to keeping the favorites. Their wine list be the glass remains tiny. You can go for the ambiance, but we won't be back.

the restaurant is quite nice. they have a very nice patio with heaters and a fire place. we sat inside at a booth right next to the patio as one of our party felt that she would be cold. the service is decent, not what I would call professional. the food was ok, the octopus appetizer was the best thing we ate. the Black sea bass was fishy, the pasta was not put together very well and the chicken was not juicy and was dry.

You know your in for a poor night when the hostess looks like she just got up and never learned to greet customers with a smile and friendly attitude. The second warning sign is when a restaurant serves over baked, dry flat bread instead of bread. You can always judge the quality of the restaurant by the bread they serve. As for the meal, DULL and tasteless. The fish served with a side of tasteless corn. The chicken over cooked and under seasoned. In my opinion this is a restaurant to AVOID . The food is dull, nothing special at all and there are much better italian restaurants for the prices they charge.

I do NOT think this will be printed. My wife and I have gone to Il Covo (and Oso as it was formerly called) for years, and thought it was the VERY best. We went the other evening for our special eighth wedding anniversary. We live in W.L.A. so it is fairly far. We walked in and the Maitre' de had the longest face. Not pleasant at all. He sat us in front of "loud blaring" speakers. We asked him to lower the sound level, and he shrugged and lowered it. But it was back up in a few minutes. The waiters were ALL in jeans-never dressed like this before. The menu was a photocopy, very "tacky" and quite changed, except the prices were very expensive for the quality of the meal. We were VERY disappointed, as it was always one of our favorites.

I like this restaurant but woud love it if the menu was expanded and the service a little sharper. Sitting on the patio is a lovely experience but with such a limited menu, I probably would try other Italian restaurants with a wider selection. The food was good but not great! Truthfully, the level of fine cuisine is so high in LA, that restaurants like Il Covo are going to have to step up their game.

It was luke warm and there wasn't much of it. More annoying was the accompaniment of halved cherry tomatoes. How about a few string beans guys!
