A word from Il Casale
Il Casale is located in the heart of Belmont at 50 Leonard Street. Acclaimed Chef Dante de Magistris and his brothers Damian and Filippo, the team behind the celebrated Restaurant Dante in Cambridge, have joined forces once again to bring rustic, authentic Italian cuisine to their hometown. The cucina Italiana, which is housed in Belmont’s historic firehouse, offers a beautiful brick patio, white marble bar, and barnwood tables for a unique and enjoyable dining experience. Il Casale is open Monday through Sunday. For reservations and more information please call 617-209-4942 or log on to www.ilcasalebelmont.com. “I loved a lot of restaurants this year, wantonly and casually, and then I moved on. il Casale was one I loved seriously; it’s a keeper. Chef Dante de Magistris and his family hit this one out of the park.” - Devra First, Boston GlobeContinued

  • "The only reservations on OT are early 5:30 or late 8:30. Taking an early reservation, we were surprised to find an empty dining room. When we left, around 7:00 the restaurant was less than half full. When the hostess was questioned whyyhere were no reservations a t 6:30 or 7:00 she clearly placed the blame on OT, not the restaurant. I personally smell a rat in the system. Not a good way to keep the customer satisfied."

  • "A good place for a nice dinner or a fun evening. Pleasant atmosphere, not quiet, but not rowdy either. Good food, though a bit pricy and portions on the small side. Service is consistently outstanding."

  • "It was our first time at Il Casale and Olga M was AMAZING!!! We will definitely return with our friends!!!"

  • "I was looking for some place new to take my mother out to dinner. Il Casale was fantastic! Great location in Belmont in an old double door fire station. Lots of exposed brick, glass, and high ceilings. Service was outstanding. The meal was fantastic. The only downside was the noise level of the room. I look forward to returning again."

  • "I had the bolognese and we shared a number of appetizers. All of the food was fresh and fantastic. The atmosphere was lively but not too noisy. Wait staff was competent if not spectacular. I highly recommend it!"

  • "This is definitely our "go to restaurant" for all of the above reasons. Make a reservation though unless you plan to eat at 5 or 5:30. It's a super place!"

  • "Everything we had, from appetizers to dessert, was very good. Fresh, well-prepared and well-presented dishes. Their cocktails are also excellent, and they have a nice wine list. The place was very busy on a Sunday night. Service by our waitress, Olga, was excellent. A bit pricey, but the portions are adequate and the quality of the food warrants the prices. We would definitely return."

  • "How many times have you heard rave reviews about a restaurant, only to find it doesn't quite meet your expectations? My wife and I heard great things about Il Casale for years and finally went this past weekend. We were not disappointed in the slightest. Food was fantastic! Service was just as good and the atmosphere was vibrant and surprisingly chique for a restaurant located in the suburbs of Boston. So glad we went."

  • "The food is great. The waitress should have pointed out that the meal was a la carte. I would have ordered more. We ended up getting just meat for dinner. It was my mistake for making an assumption about the meals. You can't go wrong with the quality of the food though."

  • "Our family of 5 dined at Il Casale this past Sunday. A friend had recommended it and it did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is very cool with exposed brick and dim lights. The food was AMAZING! The highlights: Arancini balls, the traditional meatballs (very tender and flavorful) the creamy polenta side (delicious). The veal saltimboca, the short ribs with gnocchi and the pesto with grilled chicken were absolutely notable. The grilled chicken that came with the pesto was so so good - and who even likes chicken? The bread and olive oil were even very good. The only thing that wasn't very good was the black ink pasta with cuddle fish. It turned my lips and teeth black and who needs that? The chef's table near the kitchen was fun!"

  • "We both shared the mussel appetizer which was quite good with a great sauce. We both had pasta dishes (full portions) which were generous portions and very enjoyable. The wine list offered a wide variety of Italian wines that were very nice. We liked the interior and the restaurant has a high energy level. Our waiter was outstanding and knew the menu very well. Our only complaint is the other wait service kept hovering over our table and could not wait to remove dishes, bread, etc before we were ready. Overall, great experience and looking forward to a return..........."

  • "A little disappointed. Pork meatball ap was best dish we had. Ceasar salad which we split was nicely plated but bland. Where's the cheese? My scallop entree which cost $29 were 4 measley sized scallops over puree of something.. Hubs not impressed w the saltimboca. Service was the saving grace but not enough for us to return,"

  • "Home-made pasta combined with interesting sauces, in two serving sizes. Three or more seafood entrees. Familiar antipasti immaculately prepared and served, and a wine list that accommodates every budget. What more could one ask for? The staff is friendly and professional - your table is monitored unobtrusively and service is prompt, even when the restaurant is crowded. Because it is a magnet for groups of young professionals after work, the restaurant can be somewhat noisy if your reservation is for early evening; it quiets down considerably after 7:30. And reservations are absolutely a must, given its popularity. Make them well ahead of time."

  • "We had not been back to Il Casale for quite some time and returned for the best meal we've ever had there. Rather than going with one of their tasting menu options, which we've often done in the past, we chose a couple of small starters, split a half-order of pasta--love that their menu is flexible enough for this--and shared the two-person special of herb-crusted pork chop with truffled polenta and sauteed sugar snaps. That made a wonderful meal, with lots of variety, and everything was especially good. My glass of Valpolicella was really good and interesting (a lemony nose on an Italian red?!) and paired beautifully with the pork. Our server was great, and easily got us out the door in time for curtain without rushing us."

  • "Converted Fire Station now a restaurant. Food was very good. Service was only fair and surprising based on all the hype this place has generated. Tables are on top of each other so difficult to talk to your own party. The noise level is very high probably due to the high ceilings and the clammoring of dishes all around. We sat down and were not greeted by our server for almost 20 minutes! They should think about turning some of the staff responsible for refilling water glasses into servers who can take your order. The glass fillers were standing around with pitchers in their hands and refilled the glass after taking only a couple of sips! Wish the wine and cocktails came just as quickly."

  • "The venue was great -- attractive, lively and inviting. The service was attentive and kind. The food was disappointing. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing very good. Except the bread, which was excellent. I would go again because it is conveniently located and, as I said, there is nothing wrong with it. But for a good food experience there are many, many, other better places."

  • "We had to eat early, so I got a reservation at 5:45. We ordered an appetizer of mussels. Ten minutes later the waitress comes back to tell us that they are out of mussels. How many people were there before us at 5:45? Caesar salad was fine. Then I ordered spare ribs with gnocchi. The gnocchi was over cooked - it was soggy. The dish was boring and tasteless. My wife had a squash ravioli dish that she said lacked spices. I was looking forward to this place but I was disappointed. The service was fine, nothing great though. I won't go back."

  • "A friend and I went out to dinner on Sunday evening and the food was delicious. I had a green salad with apples and walnuts and a surprisingly sweet and light chick pea salad as my meal. The portions were reasonable sizes (not enormous) and the flavors were creative and interesting without being pretentious. Our meal started well when we asked about wine by the glass and because we did not recognize the wines on the list, the waiter brought out two for us to try before we decided. Sadly our waiter was either having a bad day or we'd done something to offend him because after his helpful approach to the wine, he made no effort to smile or be pleasant and answered our questions with one-word answers. Otherwise the meal was terrific."

  • "I shared a relaxed early meal last Friday. The waiter was not interested in serving us however but continued to chat with colleagues. For the price not worth the trip."

  • "We've lived in Belmont for about 7 years now and always said, 'we gotta try that place'. As we're 3 weeks away from moving out of Belmont, we finally tried Il Casale. We had a great date night (thanks to our babysitter) and were truly happy that we tried it before moving out of town. Service was excellent - friendly, informative, attentive, and non-hovering. The food was solid and described well on the menu. We'd definitely recommend or go back again!"

  • "We are never disappointed at Il Casale. The food is always delicious, the service attentive and the high quality of ingredients very fairly priced. The only down side is the level of noise prompted by an always full house of happy and talkative customers. That, however, does not keep us from coming back for consistently fine food and a fine time."

  • "The fluke crudo was nice. The space is lovely. We liked the pesto pasta and the medium-rare steak was indeed medium-rare. So what's not to like? Too salty. The black ink pasta was so salty we gave up on it. Bread could have been warmed. So probably won't revisit."

  • "For our 5:30 table the hostess asked us to sit in the bar area with high seating, we told her we would prefer sitting in the dining room because the high seats in the bar area were uncomfortable for my wife. She checked and told us nothing was available. The dining room was 90% empty. She assured me that it would be rapidly fill. The dining room was never full during our dinner. In fact when we left, there were 3 tables for 4 open. My salad was rushed; one order did not come. Because we were in the bar area, my seat was hit multiple times. One of the items we ordered never came until we reordered it. The evening manager came to our table and asked how we liked dinner. We told her all of these issuer. She comped part of our dinner."

  • "This is my second time at this restaurant. I would have to say both times the food ranged from good to very good...minus any "wow" factor. Given that, the menu is creative but the basics should have been better. My partner had the pasta with pesto sauce which looked appealing, but lacked the zest that fresh basil brings to this dish. I had a squash ravioli that had a flavorful light cream sauce if not a tad sweet...but cooked to a perfect consistency. The wine list is quite limited. I intend to return for a third visit to see if there are any hidden gems on the menu. The service is excellent. It can be noisy once the restaurant is in full swing. The staff is welcoming and our waiter was knowledgeable."

  • "The cheese plate was really minimal, more bread than cheese. The pasta special of the day was disappointing, the shrimps were overcooked and very chewy. The best part was the dessert."

  • "Although the reviews for this restaurant was very inviting, I was very disappointed with the food. The Valentine's special menu had several Items that looked appealing so I tried the crab appetizer and the seafood entree. The crab appetizer taste was good, but it had allot of starch (potato?) that took away from what could have been a delicious treat. The grilled seafood was over cooked and seemed to be not very much (1 tiny shrimp and 5-6 small, thin pieces of about 1" square of several white fish) for the price. It could have past as an appetizer compared to the entrees that my table companions were served. Overall, I was extremely disappointed with the food and will go somewhere else for special occasions or weekly date nights."

  • "I've been to il Casale quite a bit and have never had a bad meal or experience. The food is always changing with some great go to favorites having a permanent place on the menu (ie bolognese). Service is fantastic and whenever Dante (one of the owners) is at the restaurant he always make a point to check in on the tables."

  • "It is nice to find a place with ambience and very good food without going into the city. The tables are close together and it can be somewhat noisy but the warm brick walls make the place seem more inviting. The veal medallions were melt in your mouth tender and the ribeye special was cooked as ordered. We split the broccoli rabe which was enough for 2 people. It had a subtle garlic flavor and was my favorite dish of the meal. My friend ordered the tiramisu for desert and I had mini connolis. We both have had better versions of those desserts. Our waiter was very attentive throughout our meal and our service from all the staff was excellent. I will definitely dine there again."

  • "We have been meaning to visit this restaurant for a year. I had the best steak of my life! Wonderful service, over the top as if they knew what you wanted or needed next. Couldn't have picked a better place for my wife's birthday! Romantic, warm environment but not so loud that I would have to raise my voice to speak. Would recommend highly, cannot wait to go back!"

  • "Having had two dinners at Il Casale in the past month, this restaurant has worked its way onto my top five list. The menu offers something for everyone. All of my dining companions enjoyed their orders immensely. Cocktails & wine selections are great. And the ambiance of the restaurant which is in Belmont Center's former brick firehouse is fantastic."
