Il CapriccioOne of Boston's Best!I've been going to Il'Capriccio for years. It is always consistently delicious... not just good. The menu changes regularly but staples, like the mushroom soufflé; mussel's in white wine sauce; and their fabulous bolognese sauce, are always available. The staff is attentive and friendly. Special requests are never a problem. You can't go wrong for a special occasion or any day of the week. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and seated with no wait. Our alcoved table afforded just the right amount of privacy without feeling isolated: the 1/2 glass walls allowed us to see and flag our wait staff, but kept our conversation and the conversations of other tables private. The food was simply delicious. We loved the shaved artichoke salad, seared foie gras and gravlax/ striped bass crudo. Thumbs up on the night's special ribeye steak, veal tenderloin, lamb chops and porcini mushroom risotto. Finally, kudos to the wait staff. Our waitress was patient to those who had endless questions and served us with a warm demeanor. Appetizers and entrees were perfectly paced. The service was fantastic and the food was easily on par with some of the best restaurants in the North End. The décor of the restaurant seemed a little dated and we weren't quite sure why the room we were in was walled off in glass (perhaps for banquet purposes). Our table of six ordered 3 appetizers, 1 salad, 6 entrees, 2 desserts, and 1 bottle of wine and every single taste was exceptional! The tuna tartare melted in my mouth, calamari was divine, sausage-stuffed pepper was reported as delicious. The artichoke salad was gorgeous and chockful of goodies. The group ordered 2 veal medallions, 2 soft-shell crabs, the cod, and swordfish. No one was disappointed in the least! If I was pressed to select my favorite of all, it would have to be the tuna tartare. Only expecting to get an entree and glass of wine, the evening's menu enticed us to try some other tastes of Spring. Asparagus and mushroom salad with poached egg was warm and silky with a nice earthiness. I was excited to see veal carpaccio and the grilled octopus and squid on warm garbanzo puree. I think the later was my favorite thing that we ate. One thing I love about Il Capriccio's menu aside from the seasonal ingredients, is the reliable items that I've come to crave (I'm sure I'm not alone): striped bass or cod, with white wine and grape tomatoes, linguine bolognese, wild boar sausage to name a few. This was the first time that we went to a wine dinner, and we loved it! We learned about the wines from two different vineyards in Italy. It was delicious, great flavors with different textures. Then we had a few different salads and everybody enjoyed their choice. I had a small plate of Spaghetti Bolognese. It really good but a little full at that point so I took it home and enjoyed it today for lunch. There was a mix up in the order and the waiter was very apologetic and gracious. He sent free desserts to the table and we also had decaf cappuccino to finish. It was a really nice meal and great ambiance. The waiter checked in on us but was not overbearing. The service was impeccable and the wait staff is personable and very helpful in choosing from their wide variety of Italian delicacies. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys large portions at fair prices or just loves to eat amazing food. We started with mussels and the mushroom soufflé (literally to die for) and finished with the duck and swordfish. It was cooked perfectly and they were beyond gracious in our request to change our side dishes. How about starting with Souffle di Porcini, Veal Carpaccio with Caper Sauce & Steamed Mussels; an amazing mix of textures and flavors and don't forget bread to soak up every last drop of the delicious sauces left behind. This is just the start of a dining experience you too will want to return to over & over again. The hostess & wait staff make you feel special; as if you were the only diners. Both were excellent. It had been a few years since I last had their Fettuccine Bolognese and after tasting it wondered why I hadn't ordered more frequently on my other visits. My wife had the Roast Duckling with Mustard, Capers, Roast Peppers and Roast Polenta. If you want to know what a really good duck dish is, try this dish. You'll be heard pressed to find another place that can serve a better duck dish. The chef's put out some of the most consistently good dishes in the city. From old favorites like the BEST Tuna Tar Tar and Chicken Schnitzel, to new seasonal faves that stay true to the theme and history we've come to expect from Il Capriccio, it's simply a pleasure to be here. It can get a little boisterous at times, but it was fairly quiet this evening. Always is fun and energetic and we are always welcomed like old friends.

We dined there with serious food and wine savvy Europeans and the reviews were over the top favorable. They couldn't get over how gracious and warm and helpful the staff was at every level. The food received high praise from very discerning palates and they were impressed with the world class winelist. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who appreciates wonderful food, expert service and reasonable prices. And Free Parking! If you want to just drop in and have a casual bite to eat in the convivial bar area that's also a great option.
