Diner Reviews
  • "excellent food in a nice neighborhood setting/ the pasta and pizza were great"

  • "We dined at Il Canale with our 3 children after shopping in Georgetown. It was a delightful experience. The pasta & meatballs were excellent & they catered to the kids needs. They had a good selection of authentic pizzas."

  • "Best pizza outside of Italy (maybe ever better) and the other foods are great too. We had appetizers of Calamari & Zucchini and Polpette (meatballs) both of which were great. For mains we had pizza, eggplant parmigiana and bistecca which were equally as good. Everything is authentic right down to the waiters. Go and enjoy!"

  • "I think this is very average Italian fare. I booked in based on the good reviews, but the food was average at best. It seems like mostly tourists were trapped there with us!"

  • "The restaurant is very noisy. Our waiter was not very good at managing his time between tables. And he took umbrage when I ordered 2 desserts to share for 3 people and asked for 3 plates. He wanted to know why I asked for the plates. I explained that the last time we had dinner at Il Canale and ordered desserts to share we didnot receive plates and had to wait for them. Supposedly folks from the Italian Embassy come here -- but the restaurant is overrated. There is no warm, gracious atmosphere. It's my third time there, and probably my last ."

  • "I don't any place in Washington can compete with Il Canale when it comes to pizza. It's spectacular."

  • "The food was great! The server was very nice, helpful and amazing. We had the meatballs that were excellent, the cheese plate, diavola pizza and pasta it was all delicious. The house wine was very good as well. We will definitely be back soon!"

  • "I made a reservation beforehand (6 years in the industry taught me to always have reservations on Saturday nights) and they sat us right by the stair to go to the bar. Though the table placement was definitely cramped (more of an add-on), the food and service more than made up for it. I didn't even have a chance to look through the wine book (not list) before our appetizer came. Even my picky eater of a mom (it was her birthday dinner) loved it. Summary: weird placement of tables, wonderful food (Gnocchi and pasta), wonderful wine, and full of people who love to eat, drink, and enjoy. Definitely one of my favorites- I'll be back!"

  • "Neapolitan pizza was great. Had the tuna salad which was good but the accomplishing vinaigrette was a little lite on the taste for the salad. It was a good vinaigrette but the tuna needed a little bit of a spice in the salad dressing."

  • "Had a great bottle of Wine. Very reasonably priced. Zucchini and calamari appetizer was more fish than vegetables however both were very good. Pizza with ricotta was excellent. Service was very good."

  • "We really enjoyed our meals, the food was delicious. The service was quite good too. The kitchen was also very accommodating for special requests, which I really appreciated. But, I didn't expect the restaurant to have large screen TVs going. I thought the menu choices indicated a classier place. Not only that, but the TVs were showing boxing. Not something I'd ever want to watch, especially during dinner. Please consider getting rid of the TVs."

  • "We ate at Il Canale on a Saturday night. The food was very good, with lots of great choices on the menu. Service was very good as well. We were seated on the balcony which was cozy and perfect for a summer evening. We would definitely recommend this if you're in the mood for true Italian food."

  • "Everything was great about Il Canale! I got a pizza and it was delicious. The service was quick, we were in and out in less than an hour. The menu had numerous good things to pick from and it is located just off the main path of entertaining Georgetown. It is midway between the main street and the water, so the perfect place to stop after a day of shopping before we head down to catch the sunset by the water. The environment was fresh, good lighting. Would definitely eat again!"

  • "The ambiance in the restaurant is bustling but quaint and comfortable. The outside terrace is great when the weather is good. I had a pasta dish with shrimp that was delicious. My friend had the gnocci and raved about it. We both had a side salad full of fresh veggies but the dressing was a bit bland. The wine was also good...served in an 8oz portion so you won't need to order a second unless you're drinking up quickly ;-)"

  • "I love the pizza at In Canale, and have also enjoyed some of the pastas. However, several things this about this restaurant have consistently disappointed me: their salads are tasteless, the service is mediocre and I never get a table in a location that's comfortable or pleasant. This last time I made a reservation well in advance and hoped for a table outside on the terrace. I understand that they cannot guarantee an outside table, but a table next to the busy service station and near the restrooms, with inadequate room for the chairs for our party of 3, was downright offensive. The next time we try this restaurant I better get a decent table, or I'll probably settle for pizza at some less heralded restaurant after that."

  • "I love Il Canale's pizza so much that I haven't tried much else on their menu, but it's so delicious that I don't feel like I'm missing out!"

  • "Best pizza we've had since our trip to Italy! Particularly the prosciutto and arugula. Pleasantly surprised by the Sauvignon Blanc from the Dolomites. The outdoor seating works great for kids. And the setting in old Georgetown is lovely. Combine with a walk before or after along the canal..."

  • "I have been to Il Canale at least six times and I will keep going back because they have the best pizza in DC. That being said, every time I go I am disappointed by the service. The servers are always rushing you to order before they even ask you if you want something to drink and very rarely check on you once you get your food. The one time I went there with a large group they clearly couldn't handle it and took forever just to get drinks. If you're going there for dinner make sure to have a reservation or be prepared to wait."

  • "Table for six. Last minute open table reservation. Waiter not overly or under attentive but was spot on with timing and orders. Tagliere appetizer was delicious. One said marghareta pizza was salty. My bolognese was good but a little bland. Would go again and recommend and try everything on menu."

  • "Felt like we were transported right back to Italy. Food was great, tasty and fresh. Try the cannolis!"

  • "Have been to this restaurant several times and have never been disappointed. Food is constantly wonderful. Their oven fired pizza is the best in D.C. Very attentive and friendly wait staff. Roof top terrace and a couple street lined tables for outside dining. Place is small and always crowded. They are expanding so more room is coming. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Great food, excellent service. I made a note with my OpenTable reservation that I had a very special 12 year old guest who I needed to impress, and would appreciate them treating her like a VIP. They certainly did. When she arrived, she was acknowledged as their most important guest of the day. They sent our table bruschetta, and at the end of our meal, she was served cannolis on a plate that said "You are awesome!" Foodwise - very good pizza. My young guest her entire margarita pizza, and her mom and I split the tuna salad and a pizza with zucchini, spinach, and prosciutto. Tuna salad was fair, but we expected something with more green. I'd order the house salad next time and will try their pasta."

  • "We enjoyed Il Canale very much. The service was great and the food even better. We ordered the mozzarella and tomato appetizer, which was a perfect portion size to share. Next we had the pizza Margarite. This reminded me so much of the pizza we enjoyed in Italy! Will definitely go back next time we are in the DC area just for the pizza! The table next to us had an order of meatballs that looked too good to resist, so we had an order too, with some bread for getting all the last bits of sauce. So yummy! And I must mention the light, crisp Italian wine that our server recommended…perfect for a hot summer evening after exploring DC all day. I really wanted to get the cannoli for dessert. Next time. Grazie Il Canale!"

  • "This is a great casual Italian place. Very relaxed atmosphere, great food, very laid back vibe, excellent pizza, attentive servers. This place has it all. Very simple and fresh menu. Don't miss out on this spot."

  • "The DC area is not the place for good Italian food. This place does a very nice job with the basics, and that alone makes it one of the best in the area. Our party of four had a variety of dishes and all were well prepared from quality ingredients and delicious. I look forward to going back."

  • "Ordered the seafood pasta and the build-your-own Neapolitan pizza; both were delicious. Being from Toronto, I was surprised that you can build your own Neapolitan pizza, since most of the Neapolitan pizza places in TO forbids you to do so, reason being that their chef knows best, and one best to obey their knowledge of food pairing and must not alter the ingredient list to ruin the authentic taste. Now I know those TO restos are just full of bull manure. I digress, loved the food here, service was too notch. Will definitely visit again if in DC."

  • "An overall great experience. Even with a last minute reservation, the staff were accommodating and seated us on the rooftop terrace where we received excellent recommendations for both food and wine. Must try this small slice of Italy!"

  • "We have great pizza in Connecticut, and are seldom tempted to order it when in other states. Il Canale's pizza sounded good when we read about it, looked good, smelled good, and tasted fantastic. The calamari appetizer was among the best I've had anywhere, and the salad complemented the rest of the meal perfectly. Service was excellent. This is a great place to go in Georgetown!"

  • "Booked a table here for the first time on Mother's Day. We were kind of leery that it wasn't even half full. Later we're glad it wasn't bec it was quiet. I could imagine it could get loud and busier when full. All I can say is food was amazing. I'm definitely coming back here for the gnocchi and cannoli. "

  • "Il Canale was very accommodating for our late arrival to our reservation due to metro backups! We were placed outside the restaurant although walking traffic on a saturday afternoon was a bit busy for the georgetown side street. I would've preferred the patio options! Otherwise, great great attentive service and the food was delicious! Definite Recommendation!"

  • "A group of 4 of us went to Il Canale on Friday night. We started with the anti-pasta platter which was oustanding and each of us had a pizza which was perfectly cooked and tasted wonderful. We shared a bottle of the house red wine which was quite good and also a great value. The noise level was a bit high, but this is to be expected on a bustling Friday evening in a small Georgetown restaurant. We'll definitely be back! "

  • "We made reservations for early Saturday evening because I was in town to run a half-marathon the next day. The calamari to start with was lovely - not at all chewy. The batter was a little flakier than I prefer but my husband loved it. The bruschetta was perfect. The right amount of oil and tomatoes etc. I got the diavola - it was great. Just the right amount of kick for me. My husband got the calzone and liked it as well. The cannoli were out of this world. "
