  • "Nice restaurant with very good food, you won't be disappointed"

  • "Outstanding food and service. My kids are picky eaters when we travel so when they give it a thumbs up you know you have something special. Highly recommended!"

  • "Excellent food, great service! A true find, real Italian food!"

  • "The food was very delicious; however, we had to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time for a table. After being seated, the waitress was inattentive and we continued to wait a long time for menus, then again to place our order."

  • "meatball sauce was orange. while we were eating they served a pizza then took it back when i complained. place was empty and felt like i was on a time clock. i have eaten there before and not going back. not a place to relax."

  • "Went with a friend - were both in DC from the far reaches of the country (me from AK, she from PA). We were "starving" so we started with a pizza to share and then each had an entree. The meal was very, very good. The place was so noisy and our waitress so soft spoken, we had no idea what she was saying to us. The table next to us was so close, we might as well have been part of the family. We dined upstairs and seemed much more crowded and noisy than the last time we ate there and sat downstairs. Would I go back with a friend? yes. Would I go there on a first date? No."

  • "It was really good Italian entrees and pizza is typically really good. Ask to cook well. The appetizers were incredible."

  • "Our family of 4 loved the food, restaurant and closeness to the campus! Great experience for our first time in the area! We would suggest to other friends and family!"

  • "Found this place at the last minute walking thru Georgetown and decided to try it. We both ordered the pizza, a margherita and a Georgetown, both were out of this world. They are worth the walk or the drive from anywhere. Service was good but nothing great."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "Very nice, all the food was good, homemade pasta great just like eating in Tuscany. Service good and friendly, not rushed and not slow."

  • "We had dinner with two friends from New Orleans and had a very good, reasonably priced meal and I would recommend to others to try Il Canale."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "The ambience is inviting in a nice two level space with outdoor seating in nice weather. Our salads and meatball starter plate were delicious, as were the generous individual-size portions of thin-crust pizza. A solid choice for Georgetown."

  • "We found Il Canale by reading a review of another restraurant from a local who said that Il Canale was the best Italian restaurant around and I couldn't agree more. Our waiter was perfect...attentive without being overbearing and did a great job of guiding us through the menu. The Calamari and Brushetta appetizers were both terriffic. For dinner, we got a pizza (Georgetown), the gnocci and the spaghetti and meatballs...all of which were terrific. Dessert was excellent as well (tiramisu and cannoli). This was just what we needed after a snowy day killed our other plans. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in DC."

  • "I celebrate my birthday with my husband and other two couple of friends in Il Canale. We had complimentary bread with a delicious roasted garlic olive oil to start. Everybody ordered different dishes, and we could taste many different things in one big meal. For apps we had Calamari, Bresaola and La Mozzarella di Bufala. Everything was delicious, specially the mozzarela, very soft and creamy, and the sun dried tomato that comes in the third dish. My friends tried Scialatielli ai Frutti di Mare, a great al dente fresh artisan pasta and my husband and I ordered Margherita and Il Canale pizzas. For dessert, a complimentary Cannoli di Ricotta was offered for my birthday. Awesome! We enjoyed the restaurant, the area, the service and the food."

  • "Their menu talks about how good and fresh their food is, but food was not seasoned properly. Food did seem like it was made fresh, except for the calamari which was rubbery and bland. The rest of the food was good. I didn't care for the sauce on the gnocchi, (thought it tasted like "Chef-boyardy") but the actual potatoes were good. I will say the il Canal pizza was amazing and one of the best priced/value items at $18. The wife ordered a caprice salad which she said was good thanks to the imported mozzarella however this dish was over $20. Parking is terrible and restaurant overcrowded. If it is going to be that expensive, the food needs to be seasoned and cooked properly."

  • "The food here is amazing. You can't go wrong with the pizzas and the servers are great at recommending complementary wines. Oh, and the cannoli are not to be missed!!"

  • "Wonderful authentic pizza. I ate it and totally abandoned my low carb diet for the night! But it was worth it. Pizza had all the right elements....sauce not overly sweet, just the right amount of toppings ( we had buffalo mozzerella, prosciutto and basil), thin hand tossed crust that was soft not crusty. One pie served 2 easily. We also split a ceaser salad and a cold antipasto plate. Wine was good at a reasonabe price. Staff was very welcoming and our table by the window upstairs was great. We arrived at 6:30...and the place was packed by 8"

  • "We tried Il Canale after hearing friends rave about the place. We were seated promptly by a friendly hostess, and the busy, cozy atmosphere of the restaurant seemed promising. We ordered the Sciatatielli Alla Scoglio (artisanal pasta, mussels, shrimp and clams in white wine/garlic sauce) and Bistecca con Palate (Steak and Potatoes). The Sciatatielli was coarse and bland, and both dishes lacked seasoning. Everyone around us was eating pizza. On the way out I tasted a sample and it was fantastic. If I could reliably find a parking space in Georgetown, I would make this one of our top choices for AVP Pizza (along with Pupatella and Pizzeria Orzo."

  • "I visited Il Canale for the first time for lunch a week ago, and liked it so much that I came back a week later for dinner. Everything is incredibly fresh and seems like it was made with great care. The menu isn't huge, but has enough options to make most people very happy. The Cacio E Pepe (which I believe is on the lunch menu only) is fantastic (and very rich). The Paccheri and bruschetta are also amazing. Of course, the pizza is fantastic as well."

  • "Il Canale offers authentic Neapolitan pizza and fantastic service. Small wine list, but with some great Sicilian wines. We will continue to return!"

  • "Tried Il Canale for lunch after becoming tired of paying $25 and up for a plate of pasta. White pizza with buffalo mozzarella was good. Very thin crust, as advertised. But not a wow. Linguine with clams was good, too. Al dente, flavorful white wine sauce, but my friend's penne with mushrooms was disappointing. All in all okay, but won't rush back."

  • "We heard about his restaurant from friends who share our love of Italian food. It's an attractive place. We made a reservation and were kept waiting only a minute. The seating and table placement upstairs was a little awkward--the three of us, sitting at a table set for 4, were never able to find enough room to be completely comfortable. It was the food, however, that we came for and it was indeed outstanding. The home made bread (nicely crusty) with oil and garlic, salad with a very nice light dressing, and fresh made pasta were all excellent. But the very best was their thin-crust pizza. On a recent trip to Italy I had pizza almost every day. Il Canale may serve the best Neopolitan pizza I have had in the US. I can't wait to return."

  • "This was my third time at Il Canale and it was again incredible. The bottle of wine we ordered (which was their 'special' and was discounted in price - which I like a lot), was wonderful! We started with an order of calamari, which is by far the best I have ever had. Then the pizza and pasta was out of this world. Definitely check Il Canale out if you have not yet done so. But be sure to make a reservation!!"

  • "I have been to Il Canale several times and the food never falters. On this occasion I ordered calamari for an appetizer and the eggplant pizza for the entree. So delicious! The food came out quickly and the servers were very attentive. My only two complaints are that we were sat next to two large parties and they didn't provide an ice bucket for our wine. I felt like I had to yell across my two top table to speak with my friend. Also, toward the end of the wine (which we brought ourselves) it became warm. Other than that, it was so delicious and I will be back again!"

  • "We came specifically for their pizza, which is terrific! Very authentic Italian food with diners that are Italian, as well. They have an all day menu for Sunday, which is great if you eat at an odd hour. The tunarella salad is wonderful and so fresh tasting. Great place."

  • "Had just one night in Georgetown and after reading Many reviews of restaurants there , we chose IL Canale Very happy that we did ! Great Food ,( i had classic Spag. & meatballs ) ambiance and a friendly Staff . Would def. return ! 2 level dining room and restrooms are on 2 nd level which could be a problem for some people ."

  • "If you show up and find the place packed with people (of all ages) waiting to eat their outstanding pizza. Be patient... It's well worth your wait. But we LOVE the gnocchi's - they are heavenly. You have to get on a plane and fly to Italy to find better! Seriously! Our friends from Italy agree."

  • "In the sense that I've had the same tourist food along the Grand Canal in Venice and here at Il Canale, yes like Venice. The pizza oven is very nice, imparting good crustiness, but the sauce made the middle soggy and the pizzaiolo threw TONS of salt on the pizza. The host was alert and trying, but servers and other waitstaff just untrained and dissonant, despite appearing to want to please. I can't think of a good reason to return."

  • "This place has a lot going for it -- the location right on the canal (hence the name), friendly service, an authentic Italian feel and taste. The pizza is great -- and how lovely that they offer samples while you wait by the entrance! We enjoyed nice wine that comes in a carafe with enough for a glass and a half -- perfect amount and it allows for each of us to select a different style. In addition to the pizza, the salad was great, as well as an eggplant parmigiana and a lovely salad. The only down side of this busy spot is the noise level -- it is the only thing that would keep me from coming back more often. Request a table downstairs for less noise."
