Stopped by for dinner before going to see a movie. The bruschetta and vegetable pizza were absolutely delicious. Only detractors were the over-abundance of funky light fixtures.

The restaurant had great Italian cuisine and a workable ambience. Go for the food, not the interior. Though do note that it was not dingey at all, only a bit sparse and off "Italian theme."

A disastrous experience, pizzas were bland and soggy, waiters barely checked on us, no decoration at all... Avoid at all costs unless you have a bunch of tiny kids and want to let them throw food around. And even then, don't let them eat here.

We met a business colleague for dinner on a Tuesday night. And, although we were seated quickly and our drink orders taken, it took more than 15 minutes for anything - including water - to arrive. Had we been by ourselves, we would have left. When it came time to take our orders it was an extremely long and painful process. Our waitress was very critical of all of our orders and told each of us we should be ordering different things. At times, she acted as though she could not understand us. She pushed very hard on some dishes - none of which we choose. Two of us received our orders correctly, one did not. Her response was that it was our fault for not being clear - she had tried to clarify and we wouldn't listen. Sigh....

Almost everything is imported for Italy, so you couldn't get more authentic. I have been several times and Il Canale never fails to have fresh, delicious Italian cuisine. The pizza is by far my favorite in Georgetown, and the Caprese salad has the best mozzerella around.

I enjoyed my lunch which included a medium-rare pounded ribeye steak, grilled asparagus and a light salad. I appreciated that my request to substitute the potatoes for a light salad was honored. My friend had a delicious Branzino (Mediterenean sea bass) prepared in parchment with a medley of vegetables. Always delicious!

  • Noisy and not that special

It's just pizza and pasta, nothing that special. The place is noisy which makes it hard to carry on a normal conversation. Everybody around was almost shouting. Some reviews said the pizza was so good, there is better out there and reasonable price. The pasta I have ordered was $18, with just plain spinach sauce and nothing else. The pasta was not even el dente and it arrived cool and not even warm. My guess is that they were too busy and let the dish sit on the kitchen counter too long before bringing out to the table. The service is just as anywhere you can have, just as ok as any normal restaurants. So much for ooh and aah

My husband and I came here for our 2 year wedding anniversary dinner and had a wonderful experience! We made reservations through Open Table and even though most places don't pay attention to the "Special Notes," Il Canale not only paid attention to them, but made a special effort to accommodate our request for romantic seating! We got a perfect table in the corner upstairs by the window. While it was busy and the noise level was "energetic" as OT calls it, it still felt private and romantic. The service was incredible, we were checked on by multiple different people but never felt like we were being bothered. The food was AWESOME, and we even enjoyed complimentary Limoncello at the end of dinner. We'll definitely be coming back!

Loved the staff at Il Canale, however most of the rest of my experience wasn't as good. I was looking for a calming atmosphere, but instead ran into a loud, over-crowded and small room. Wine was ridiculously priced (minimum $14 for an 8 oz glass) and food was similarly overpriced for the quantity you receive (at least as far as pasta is concerned). Pizza may be more affordable. Overall, I wouldn't recommend and won't be returning

Was visiting Georgetown with high school son and we chose based on reviews...was a safe choice and both enjoyed our meals. Lots of options for older kids with limited palates...spaghetti with clams was good but nothing special. Wanted gnocchi but was told (gratefully) that they aren't potato gnocchi...Wines by the glass are a little pricey for what they are. Service was very good and we enjoyed chatting with our waiter. Its a busy spot and they provide free pizza slices to those waiting for tables which is a nice touch. Would probably go somewhere different next time just for a change but wouldn't hesitate to return.

Besides the tasty food, Il Canale is a great place for a casual lunch when you want to discuss something important and not shout over the background din. My business colleague and I got there early and sat by the window, though outdoor tables were also available, and had a very productive talk. We also enjoyed the selection of salads, pizzas and main courses (for dinner, their branzino in parchment is the best!).

We recently moved back to the US from Italy after two years and were hesitant to eat at an Italian restaurant after having the real deal in Italy. Il Canale was our first attempt and we were pleased! The pizza was thin crust and the toppings plentiful. The gnocchi was homemade and the sauce savory. Our waiter indulged us in Italian and made us feel right back at home (in Italy). Will return!

I am italian living in the US since long time. Il Canale is a REAL italian restaurant!! Outstanding food, outstanding service !! I can swear, Il Canale is much far better than many restaurants and pizzerias back to Italy. Please, don't go there if you think that "fettuccine Alfredo" is an italian food or if you expect to have "spaghetti" as side dish. Il Canale is THE italian restaurant indeed! Highly raccomended!

The service was good but the atmosphere and the food was not as great as compare to price. The noodles from the pasta was hard and the sauce was bland. The restaurant was small, at first we were seated right by the stiarway, where it was really inconveint because I was wearing a skirt, and I had to becareful because people who were coming up could see beneath our table. Therefore we moved to different table. The server was very nice to move us. If the food and the seats were more comfortable, I will come again, but the food wasn't too great!
