Diner Reviews
  • "Food was unimpressive to say the least. The service was seriously lacking, meals for 4 arrived to table about 10 minutes apart. There are many other Italian restaurants in this city with better food and service for the price. I will not go back and would not recommend to others."

  • "The ambience was amazing and romantic but the food did not live up to it's reputation. This is sad to say but the Kale Salad was the best thing we had. The duck sausage was also good but after that the meal goes downhill. The prawns come in their shell and there is no easy way to remove them so you have to eat some of the shell (not fun or tasty). The risotto was the worst, the rice was hard not al dente, HARD, and some of the cockles were not fully open. If you only care about the ambience go here if you want amazing food this is not your place."

  • "Some dishes were incredible main course under expectations. Not as good as it used to be!! But I would still recommend it. Crowd gets cooler towards 10pm and mostly during fashion week."

  • "This place never disappoints. Great food and wine as always. Tried the rib-eye for the first time and I was impressed."

  • "Beautiful rustic decor, fantastic service and the food cooked to perfection!"

  • "Not as good as it used to be. We went for a special occasion and it didn't feel/taste very special. Pastas were bland and tiny."

  • "Top notch as always, but was disappointed at the fake truffle. Absolutely no taste. Didn't realize until the day after."

  • "This northern Italian/Mediterranean restaurant is the best one I've been to in the city. Quaint, rustic, romantic. Excellent service."

  • "We were looking for somewhere special and unique (definitely not a traditional or "touristy" place) to celebrate our anniversary in NYC.... Il Buco was a perfect fit! We arrived for an early reservation as we had tickets for a show later, and were seated downstairs in the wine cellar at our request. It was quiet and romantic - for most of our dinner we had the place to ourselves. Ambiance was very warm and rustic with some unique modern lighting touches. Food was outstanding and the Tuscan kale was a highlight. The rest of the meal was like one of those dreams that you don't want to wake up from...As former New Yorkers and amateur chefs, we were both very pleased we chose Il Buco for our special night."

  • "Rustic dishes deliver thoughtful, polished punches of flavor. We were recommended an OUTSTANDING wine, which really made our meals 10x better (and the food is already a solid 9.5/10). Definitely recommend il buco--black Tuscan kale and sweetbreads!! Who doesn't love pancreas?"

  • "Great venue, yummy dinner. Il Buco lived up to the expectations of all."

  • "Still in the throws of this harsh Winter, rustic and charming Il Buco was the choice for 3 friends in dire need of food, wine and company. All 3 of us arrived early (in NYC?) and as the bartender graciously poured drinks, coats, gloves, hats, scarves where whisked away. A table was quickly made ready in a quiet corner, as had been requested. Our server was both witty and patient. (Again, NY? It's usually one or the other.) He set up a beautiful array of soul comforting dishes - bread, olives, burrata, delicate cod croquettas (my favorite), lentil soup and Spanish dorade. The lighting and warmth of the space kept us talking for hours, and we never felt hurried. Saying goodbyes on the cold Soho street, we were sure that Spring was close."

  • "The look of it is enticing & on a cold day would have been the perfect place to enjoy a meal. Unfortunately the service was so bad we thought at one point we were part of a Candid Camera set up. We waited 30 mins before we waved the hostess over just to get something to drink/see a menu. We saw no less than 6 different apathetic servers, including a final one who leaned over the table as we finished, & just uttered a surly "So?" which we took to mean is that restaurant's "Did you enjoy everything? Can I get you anything else, or shall I bring you the bill?" The final grace note was being charged per person for mediocre bread. There was no shortage of employees, but they just seemed more interested in staring at the door and each other."

  • "This restaurant is great. A classic but they need more vegetarian options. Only two apps and two main dishes with no meat? come on. I don't think we will be back unless that menu is updated a bit."

  • "The food is as promised and the atmosphere is great, very romantic. I would stay away from the Wine by the glass list and go with a bottle for better value."

  • "I live in the area and always wanted to try Il Buco for it's reputation. However it turned out to be very average. Price/quality was not a good value, seating is very uncomfortable and food is comparable to other mid-range italian restaurants. Service was OK, but what was shocking that in the middle of our dinner maintenance from the kitchen started dragging trash bags and bins around the restaurant. Overly disappointed."

  • "My wife and I did not really enjoy our meals and the professional staff was nice enough to take our meals off the bill. Maybe the menu was not quite what we were looking for..."

  • "I've been looking for a new favorite Italian restaurant in the LES/NoHo area since the closing of Il Bagatto. I think this is it. It's medium sized, quiet enough for conversation, with warm and friendly service. The food is very good creative modern Italian. We ate early, then returned after the theater for a nightcap. I'll be back soon."

  • "Ive had great meals here in the past, but this wasn't one of them. Noting was wrong per se, but the squid was over salted and pork was slightly dry, while the sauce on the lamb - tahini-based I think - was too acidic"

  • "The staff was awkward. For this 'fancy' place, it's bizarre that the staff did not offer water or inquire about what we would like to drink first. Instead all he wanted to do was push his special - a pasta dish with black truffle from france. it was priced at $50 for an appetizer like portion. There was nothing special about it or their $30 hanger steak. And they charged for the bread."

  • "The food is good, not great. And the service; the were clearly doing us a favor. No other reason for the greeter and the waitress to be so annoyed and hostile. But its got a great reputation so they can probably get away with it for a while."

  • "Time and time again, Il Buco proves that the hype is well deserved - and the price. Just a perfect evening, from incredible rustic ambience to lovely waitstaff and to-die-for food"

  • "We dined here on our first night in NYC and even though the jetlag was kicking in the food, drink and service fired up the taste buds nicely. The sommelier chose any exceptional wine for approx $50, backed up with really friendly service and lovely food - it was a great night and great start to our trip. Bar was lively with people having fun and enjoying themselves -- great place."

  • "Very comfortable, cozy ambience, felt like a trattoria in Italy. The lentil, kale soup and octopus appetizer were wonderful and the house made chocolate gelato was stellar. Highly recommended."

  • "Warm and intimate, Il Buco serves excellent food that's rich and hearty—perfect for a winter's eve. We shared steak for four, and while the portions were not huge once deboned, it was delicious—prepared simply with a bit of olive oil, salt and rosemary. The wine list is dazzling, and our waiter steered us to a house wine that was nothing short of elegant. Best of all, we sat in the wine room downstairs and felt transported to a rustic taverna in Italy. Attentive, personable service and a lovely, leisurely meal that I would happily repeat!"

  • "This is a trendy but friendly restaurant and the chef obviously takes pride in the kitchen. The selection is restricted so choices are minimal. If there is a menu item that is appealing you will be pleased, but you may find there is nothing appealing to you. The atmosphere is country rustic Italian and the wait staff is knowledgeable about the wines."

  • "Had read some reviews on Il Buco but heard some mixed comments that left me a bit cautious. Well, the great reviews are the ones to focus on. The food (other then my wife's pasta not beige hot enough) was really exceptional. The veal short ribs were outstanding. The service was equally noteworthy as our waitress recommended a Super Tuscan that was excellent as well as not over priced and then a desert wine that was also very good. The ambiance was very inviting - rustic and quaint - perfect for an anniversary celebration. Will definitely return."

  • "I have been to Il Buco for dinner- the food was wonderful. But this is the first time for lunch, and the food was equally good. My companion had Tuna cappacio for first, and a pasta for main, I am a light eater and only had had a Kale salad (their version) and the tuna. Every thing was good, and the service was hospitable - a rarity for fine dinning restaurants these day. Also the noise level was manageable, we could actually hear each other in our conversation - a bonus. I would return again for sure, and maybe try the pasta or something more substantial next time."

  • "I was stunned to find our OpenTable reservation at Il Buco was cancelled even tho I had confirmed via email that morning. My sin? Being unable to sit thru recorded music, recorded hold message, and silent hold to confirm by phone. Twice. The day before. Their explanation? Long hold time is a result of their busy-ness; and the reservation desk doesn't have email access. Duh. I believe there is something overly arrogant with a policy of canceling reservations when it's believed (in this case wrongly) that the patron has not re-confirmed. Am I alone in this? We salvaged our reservation & evening, albeit in the bar. We enjoyed exceptional lamb loin, bigeye? tuna,& fine pasta, but sadly will not return. Where was that sommelier anyway?"

  • "Amazing food and amazing wine, the changing menu is such a great way to introduce people to the great food il buco always creates based on the freshest ingredients of the season. The service is wonderful, always wanting to provide the best for each person's preferences"

  • "Service is a disaster and food is completely overpriced. We ordered the special (gnocchi with white truffles), which was a big disappointment. We were told by the waiter when we ordered that the price of half a portion was $30. We had the bad surprise to discover on the check that it was actually $50 half a portion. Worse was the fact that the waiter did not want to recognize his mistake after the facts. Obnoxious, dishonest and tasteless, I really do not recommend this place."

  • "This is a very popular restaurant, and yet, the staff (and owner) are all very warm and accommodating. We were a party of three; an hour early and planning on sitting at the bar until the time of our reservation, but they immediately gave us a table. Everything we ate was delicious: salami plate (small was galore too!), super fresh and creamy burrata, grilled cuttlefish, olive oil tasting (OMG!!!), homemade bread, wild mushroom risotto, the list goes on! As we were leaving, one of my favorite rings flew off my finger and we were searching for it. A regular customer, staff and even the owner came out to help us. My gratitude is deep. Hats off to this restaurant... one like we used to have a bunch of in NYC years back."
