Diner Reviews
  • "While it's a lovely space and the While it's a lovely space and the wait staff were pleasant, the food was unremarkable. We ordered 4 appetizers for 5 of us. The octopus and zucchini blossoms were delicious, but nothing else stood out and the portions were small. For main courses, 3 of us had different pasta dishes, 1 had the pork and 1 the salmon. The pork was the highlight. The pasta dishes were boring and again petite. We left wanting more both literally and figuratively."

  • "I really enjoyed the dinner but was shocked to find that I was charged $2.00 for bread. The sever asked if we wanted bread but never mentioned that we would be charged for it. When we complained they said it was on the menu, but we did not see it. The menu has pages and pages written about the restaurant and food that I obviously missed the fine print. They did not take it off of the bill when we mentioned it to them."

  • "I took my wife here for her birthday and it was absolutely lovely. The cocktail menu is short but well thought out and any cocktail lover would appreciate the menu. We arrived when they opened, at 5pm, which is perfect because the evening starts out charming and quiet and moves to a nice energy level by the time dinner arrives. Their wine menu is carefully curated and their sommelier suggested a fantastic bottle of wine for dinner. The food was utterly amazing, with expert preparation. You really can't go wrong here. We will definitely be back!"

  • "We have been here several times for dinner, but this was truly an experience. We were asked if we wanted to be seated in the wine cellar and immediately we said yes. We had been shown this area on one of our previous visits, but it was not open for dinner that time. What a wonderful and unique experience! Our waiter was wonderful and took great care of us. The maître d' came to check on us several times, which we have never experienced anywhere. The food is always very good but this atmosphere is like being transported to the Italian countryside. Can't wait to go back."

  • "The food, service, wine, ambiance was fantastic. My girlfriend and I love wining and dining so for our one year I wanted something very romantic and intimate. It was, as the title says, absolutely lovely. Our server tanner was lovely, the restaurant and music was lovely, the food and wine, simply perfect. We had a fantastic experience and meal and went for yet another lovely stroll through Washington square park which was a quick walk away. I've been recommending to everyone I see to bring their family or significant other for a lovely dining experience."

  • "Il Buco was recommended to me by a friend and did not disappoint. The ambience felt like we were part of a lively family dinner in Tuscany. The food was simple but fantastic - great pasta, homemade on premises with light sauces, and the wine list was lovely. Service was absolutely outstanding - the waiter and staff were extremely attentive and made the experience more enjoyable. Great spot if you are with a group or in our case, we were 2 and seated at a family style table but with a large flower arrangement in the middle to separate us."

  • "We had our wedding party dinner at Il Buco and it was an amazing experience. The staff is incredible and made our dinner such a beautiful occasion. Can't recommend it enough for a special night. Food was terrific!"

  • "Won't be returning here. We had almost finished our appetizers before the sommelier arrived to help us with a wine choice. My husband's steak was medium rare when he requested medium well and cold on arrival. My pork entree was awful. Three quarters of the thick piece of meat was skin, fat and bone ($30). The small portion of meat on the piece was red although I had requested medium well done. The apricots in the dish were unripe and hard. I sent it back and sat and waited while my husband finished his already cold entree. At the prices charged food and service should be much better. Ruined my birthday dinner. Waiter did subtract my entree from the check."

  • "The main room was beautiful and comfortable. Although there were quite a few people the noise level was low. The menu was small and delicious. All dishes were interesting combinations of flavors yet simple."

  • "We sat at the back of the restaurant, right outside of the kitchen and it felt almost as though we were in the oven itself! Service was also slow and the waiter stopped to look at his tip before saying thank you."

  • "The food and service were excellent. The only negative was that our table was near a door that was in constant use by staff. The door often bumped one chair. Staff were apologetic but would not sit at that table again."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised at the authentic ambience and menu at Il Buco. We travel to Italy every year and felt the food was really quite good. The antipasti are a must. The main course slate was a bit slim, but we all found something to please us. The wine list was great but expensive - they could use a few more moderately priced wines."

  • "The wait staff was as down to earth and engaging as you'd ever hope to find. The food was interesting and delicious. Server's recommendations were helpful and accurate. We went twice in one trip to the city, which is unfathomable. As soon as we were out the door the first night, my husband and I were each admonishing each other that we would NOT revisit the restaurant in the same trip. We couldn't help it. We are only happy that we chose to go back, which is not in line with convention. We loved it."

  • "The food, service and overall experience at Il Buco was outstanding. Our waitress was very attentive and her suggestions and the pacing of the meal were very good. The two appetizers - fava beans and cuttlefish - were excellent and they were brought out separately so we could enjoy the flavors of each dish. The homemade pasta and the fish were equally as good. We shared each dish and we both were impressed by the freshness of each of them. The entire experience was exceptional. We will be back soon."

  • "The food is all around very good. Everything is well seasoned, properly cooked, and packed with the traditional Italian flavors you could ever want from a home-style restaurant like this."

  • "From the moment you walk in to Il Buco there is a sense of warmth, a cozy dining experience awaits. We ordered the kale salad which was crisp and delicious. The Fava Bean appetizer which was so fresh and light (a perfect spring/summer dish) and the Pappardelle- Wow-incredibly tasty. Would like to have ordered more but not as hungry that day. The bread is to die for!! served with a very tasty Il Buco oil. The service was very friendly. Loved this restaurant - will be back for sure and will share our wonderful experience with others. bravo!"

  • "I have loved this restaurant since it opened. However, the food this time was bad. The lamb ragu was in fact terrible. The server never asked why I did not eat it. In fact he chatted with another server during our whole meal. The ceviche was really nice though. I wish they would get their groove back!"

  • "A foodie friend who visits NYC often, when asked for a reasonable but excellent dining experience immediately offered up Il Buco. I had confidence we would find a good meal but was pleasantly surprised how good Il Buco was on all fronts. A rustically inspired decor with more than a touch of whimsy, a charming and graciously accommodating gustatorial guide (waiter/server doesn't do his role justice) and a parade of palate pleasing performances conspired to enchant and entertain us for a perfect celebratory evening. Il Buco -- a bucolic dining oasis in the madcap maelstrom of Manhattan."

  • "A great place for a date -- first or 101st. We had a small portion of the salumi, which was quite large, and sufficient for both of us, but added the razor back clams. For out main we each split the Tagliatelle and the Anatra (duck breast.) This was a wonderful meal, I highly recommend this fine restaurant; service was perfect."

  • "One of my favorite restaurants in NYC. Food is outstanding but the waiter we had was not very good. Not because he was new or inexperienced but mostly because he didn't care."

  • "Best kale salad I've ever had. My swordfish was very good — just a tad dry, otherwise I'd call it excellent — with a tapenade that's divine. My companion had the chicken and raved about it. Attentive, friendly service. I wish that the outdoor dining wasn't communal, but I understand that they have limited space. Overall, I need to come back more, because I always love my meals from here."

  • "First of all, they were so lovely about tasting the wines by the glass, and when we made our final choice, they poured an ample glass! Brava! I find it so petty when people fill the glass with about 4 oz. of wine. The food was delicious and the company divine. Our waiter couldn't have been more solicitous, and everything came out promptly. And they served a Panacotta with a candle for my birthday dinner!"

  • "The food at Il Buco is delicious, and the olive oil tasting they offer really gives you an idea of how vibrant and varied olive oil can be. Unfortunately the service was kind of odd. At times, our waiter seemed to almost resent serving my party of two, at times ignored us when seeing we were ready for something else, and at times was extremely helpful and engaging. No one said thank you to us as we left. Additionally, while the upstairs area was lively and dynamic, my boyfriend and I had the bad luck of sitting in the basement (still a beautiful space) which was seemed dead quiet despite every table being filled. Spotty experience with great food. I think I would return despite the unevenness I felt defined the restaurant as a whole."

  • "We had a wonderful dining experience. We are non-drinkers and I had read previous reviews about pushy waiters trying to get you to order wine, but our waiter was happy to bring us water. We ordered appetizers and a main course and they were all beautifully plated and we absolutely delicious. I really liked how the menu was made according to what was in season."

  • "Tables were so low could barely put my legs underneath. My friend who is tall had to sit sideways because with her heels on she couldn't put her legs under table. Tables were so close together I could hear everything being said at next table and smell the lady's perfume. The whole place was so loud I felt I was yelling to my company. My waiter got my order wrong because he couldn't hear what I was ordering. The food was good and the lighting was great but was so uncomfortable with chairs, table, people so close next to us and noise level that it took away from ambience. "

  • "The fresh pappardelle was excellent and so was the halibut with fresh spring vegetables. The service was a little confusing! People kept circling the tables but no one seemed to be assigned specifically to our table. We waited a good while before someone came over who then had to call the sommelier to answer our question about the wine list. "

  • "yes, it's cosy and a great place to meet and eat. great food, great wine... scan the long list, the sommelier will give good advice. make a reservation otherwise you'll be waiting for a long time...."

  • "I was very disappointed with this restaurant. The service was pretentious and generally poor; we waited forever to have our drink orders taken and were generally ignored most of the evening. We were told the appetizers were good for sharing, but the order of Burrata was miniscule, barely enough for one person let alone to share. My pasta dish was mediocre and bland. The wild salmon my daughter ordered looked to be barely 3 ozs, quite stingy for the price of $35. There are so many great restaurants in NYC that this one barely deserves mention."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Food was unimpressive to say the least. The service was seriously lacking, meals for 4 arrived to table about 10 minutes apart. There are many other Italian restaurants in this city with better food and service for the price. I will not go back and would not recommend to others."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Some dishes were incredible main course under expectations. Not as good as it used to be!! But I would still recommend it. Crowd gets cooler towards 10pm and mostly during fashion week."

  • "The ambience was amazing and romantic but the food did not live up to it's reputation. This is sad to say but the Kale Salad was the best thing we had. The duck sausage was also good but after that the meal goes downhill. The prawns come in their shell and there is no easy way to remove them so you have to eat some of the shell (not fun or tasty). The risotto was the worst, the rice was hard not al dente, HARD, and some of the cockles were not fully open. If you only care about the ambience go here if you want amazing food this is not your place."
