A word from Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria
Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria is a market, salumeria, bakery and restaurant dedicated to quality products.
This "simple convivial spot that tastes just like Italy" feels like a "village inside-a-restaurant". While the Alimentari sells house made salumi, freshly baked bread and an ample assortment of imported and domestic items, the open kitchen looks out onto a rustic dining room with communal tables and long marble wine bar. A seasonal menu by Executive Chef Joel Hough features salumi/cheese boards, small sharing plates, fresh pastas and roasted meats and fish from a rotisserie and wood burning oven. The upstairs private dining loft, adjacent to the roof garden and overlooking the main restaurant and market, is available for parties up to 50 people for cocktails and/or a seated dinner. Whole fish under sea salt and roasted short ribs or porchetta are house staples often served family style as are house made gelato tastings.

Crazy crowded. 10 pm reservation seated at 10:30 and had to be moved from right in front of the door to a wonderful table by the kitchen. Foord was great. Unusual and very tasy. Not cheap but worth it - quality ingrediants well prepared. Will be back.

Simply delicious! Fresh produce, great flavors, warm decor and knowledgeable staffs!. And has been consistent since it opened! It is key. Although not really a place for kids in the evening, it would be perfect for family brunch. Always looking forward to going back!

The entree portions are so incredibly small. I ordered the gnochhi and it was beyond heaven, but there was barely enough to qualify it as a tapa let alone an entree that ran upwards of $20. I was in a group of 9, all ordering entrees, all incredibly disappointed with the portion size. The folks I was with were Swiss and Italian so I know it wasn't just my American eye that saw it as inadequate. My friend complained a couple times and they brought her additional food but, only her. Again, the food is amazing, but for what you pay not worth it.

Excellent food, good wine, great service. However, this is the second time I've gone with two people, and both times they've sat me at the bar. Don't get me wrong, the bartenders are great servers. But there's zero privacy. It's extra noisy. And it's distracting. (Definitely avoid if you're on a date!) I love the food and service at Il Buco A&V, but I don't think I'll be back with fewer than 4 people.

We had eaten several times at sister restaurant, Il Buco, but couldn't get a last-minute Saturday reservation there, so tried this more casual place. Wonderful food and excellent waiter. Took a while to get seated after our reservation time (!0 PM), but we did show up with three people instead of two. Once were seated, everything was perfect. It is a busy place, so not for a romantic dinner. But big communal tables do work well for bigger parties.

Made a reservation 3 weeks in advance for a nice dinner with my boyfriend. We were sat at a hightop table in the bar area with back-less stools as seats on a busy Saturday night. The table directly faced the bar area and with two people deep, navigating between the crowd and our table proved a little difficult for some as the table was knocked and rattled on a few occasions. Food was just okay. The artichoke appetizer was very good and the bread/olive oil served at the beginning were probably the best part of meal. My pasta was a little tough and just fine, nothing to rave about and I've certainly had better at less high profile places and less highly rated places. The mushroom appetizer was certainly not worth the $16 we paid.

Although it's crowded and you can hardly hear your companions speak, the ambiance is great and fun and the food is fantastic! We ordered two of the wild mushroom sides (cheesy, garlicy, yummy) and then another 2 (4 of us dining); salad was fresh and flavorful -- really exceptional; roast chicken is marinated and super tasty; 2 shared the short ribs which they loved; and my friend had the whole branzino which was moist and delicious. Even the desserts were superb -- panna cotta with aged balsamic; perfectly textured gelato; lemon sorbet was the weakest -- a bit too sweet/sour. No gluten free bread but, still we love this spot.

I give my experience 4 out of 5 stars. The food was delicious--no guest should ever leave without trying the short ribs. We shared one pasta--Bucatini--it was heavenly. Both dishes had a rich melt in your mouth flavor. We were sat 30 min after arriving (even though we had a reservation.) This was quickly smoothed over by glasses of Prosecco and we appreciated that the hosts acknowledged our late seating. However, our server was very absent (she seemed busy and overwhelmed.) She was not helpful with recommendations and/or describing the menu, she was not warm/friendly, and left us feeling like we disappointed her in our choices and lack of ordering dessert.

When you step in to this place off of Great Jones Street its like stepping in to an Italian eatery in Rome. The food is outstanding, the menu authentic and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The kitchen can be seen by patrons and presents itself nicely. Table seating for two is limited mostly to the bar which is cozy and well staffed. For larger parties there are ample 6-8 top tables. Everything about this place was outstanding....

The food was fantastic. The Pollo alla Griglia was possibly the most flavorful chicken I've ever eaten in my life. The gnocchi was good as well. Then desserts - we had 3 of them. Hands down the panna cotta drizzled with a 10 year balsamic was the best. However, we did manage to eat all 3 no problem.

We came for Saturday brunch and the charm hits you as soon as you walk in. Nice wooden, cozy yet open interior. Bars to sit and eat at as well as tables. Great antipasti and charcuterie selections. Do not miss the ricotta or the prosciutto, both of which were fresh and out of this world. Pasta were cooked al dente and were perfect. Bread at the table was phenomenal. We had an olive oil tasting as well which was fun and delicious. Server was distracted and didn't seem like he wanted to be there but others walking around restaurant were attentive. Wine list was pretty good, fairly priced and Italian-centric. Will definitely be back.

We were seated upstairs and it was the perfect place for our party as we wanted a room quiet enough to hold conversation. Food was interesting and fit our pescatarian crowd as there were many vegetarian and fish options. We shared all dishes. I felt the portions were a bit small. The beet dish was probably one small beet chopped up to look like more. The wine list was nice but I felt pricey for such a casual atmosphere. We did a bottle at $60 and one at $90. Overall I liked it but felt it was overpriced.

Il Buco Alimentari is the more casual offshoot of Il Buco. It is very familiar (note that there are community tables) and serves rustic, tasty, delicious, well-prepared foods, no skimping on the oil. I had the cacio i pepe, and it was done very well, with lot of terrific aged parmesan, and very corsely ground pepper, pasta very al dente. Very authentic. A lively atmosphere, bordering on very loud. The service which was excellent.

Enjoyed having a birthday celebration there greatly. Acknowledged when we were being seated by the hostess. She also remembered when I passes her by on leaving!!! Makes you feel extra special as so many other people had come in during that time. Great service - Our waiter Eric explained things well guiding us on how much to order and extra special dishes. Others there to fill water and clear off plates and silverware with each course made it feel special just as it was needed. Food excellent. Some of the portions were smaller than expected for the price but favors wonderful. Exceptional was the ricotta appetizer, the pasta's and the short ribs. The attention to detail is a tribute to the pride of ownership. Keep it up!!

I had heard great things and I have been to il Buco but from the moment I walked in I was disappointed. The hostess was not very welcoming, the server took forever to take our orders once she served us water. The menu was limiting and nothing we ate was especially good. We had the crispy artichokes to start, the riso neri (risotto with black squid ink and calamari) and the cacio e pepe. Not many pasta offerings. They also charge you $1 pp for bread. I wouldn't go back or recommend it to anyone. It's a shame, it's a cute space and great location.

This restaurant came very highly recommended so on our last night in NYC booked for a special 'guest chef' dinner. We were seated 1 hour after our reservation time and then got food 1 hour after that. The systems seem to have fallen apart on what was probably an experimental night. The staff were terrific and communicative and were dealing with a lot of unhappy guests. I'd give it a try again on a regular menu night, next time we visit.
