A word from Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria
Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria is a market, salumeria, bakery and restaurant dedicated to quality products.
This "simple convivial spot that tastes just like Italy" feels like a "village inside-a-restaurant". While the Alimentari sells housemade salumi, freshly baked bread and an ample assortment of imported and domestic items, the open kitchen looks out onto a rustic dining room with communal tables and long marble wine bar. A seasonal menu by Chef Justin Smilie features salumi/cheese boards, small sharing plates, fresh pastas and roasted meats and fish from a rotisserie and wood burning oven. The upstairs private dining loft, adjacent to the roof garden and overlooking the main restaurant and market, is available for parties up to 50 people for cocktails and/or a seated dinner. Whole fish under sea salt and roasted short ribs or porchetta are house staples often served family style as are housemade gelato tastings.

  • "This was the second time that I have arranged for a larger party to eat at Il Buco Alimentari and again the service was terrible. We are regulars and eat breakfast and lunch at the restaurant regularly. We live next door and are friends with Patrick, the barista (he's great). Basically, the problems were with the table we got (different than the one promised when reservation was made), cramped quarters, no sommelier, botched explanations of wines, lack of knowledge about wine in general and no explanation of dishes when they were dropped (particularly meat and cheese plates...we had no idea which of the meats and cheeses were which)."

  • "Came here late on a Saturday evening with friends and family. We had a larger group we were brought upstairs and seated with two other groups who seemed to be celebrating birthdays. The upstairs has a lovely atmospherejust like the downstairs. Because my party was celebrating, the hostess was kind enough to bring us all complimentary glasses of Prosecco while we waited. The noise is pretty loud, , but the food is fantastic. Be sure to brush up on your italian. I was lucky enough to have my foodie friend, who also happens to take Italian as a second language at school, so we were set, but otherwise my dairy-free eating would have been very lost and confused. The Gelato my friends ordered is to die for. Service = so-so."

  • "Entertained an Italian friend who also happens to be a cookbook author, cooking teacher and leads culinary tours to Italy. She liked it a lot. So did we. Outstanding dishes were bucatini cacio e pepe (perfectly al dente, peppery and delicious); charcoal grilled seppie with beans (melt in your mouth tender); fried baby artichokes; and the lemon curd my daughter had for dessert. Bread was excellent, crusty and chewy, old world style. Rabbit and chicken entrees were good, not great. Very noisy, but not inappropriately so."

  • "Perhaps not the last word in foodie--nothing desperately "creative" or strenuously exotic here--but beautifully done and enormously satisfying. Wonderful salumi and fish dishes, a fabulous citrusy salad, and terrific gelati. Pleasant seating at long tables, subdivided according to the number of people in each party. A bit loud for my taste, but not overwhelmingly so. Excellent service and friendly general staff. We were even pressed to take home free loaves of bread, and they're still delicious two days later! This becomes an instant favorite. We will most assuredly go back again and again."

  • "Although very busy, we were warmly welcomed and immediately seated at the time of our reservation. The wood and brick decor reminded me of restaurants in Tuscany: rustic and warm. The roasted gnocchi in a creamy mushroom sauce was an unusual and delicious dish. The salumi platter was beautifully presented and excellent and although the bread and oil were an extra charge, they were worth it. The doughnuts and olive oil cake were superb and because the pasta portions were not too large, we did not feel we had ordered too much. Bread, pasta and desserts we sampled were all house made and of the highest quality. I'd definitely go back."

Then, when we sat down, two of the 3 reasons i had come in the first place were no longer on the menu (agnolotti and pepper crusted short rib). And all the substitutions were most disappointing. I will not be going back."

It was our fifth or sixth visit, and we'll be back soon. The only negative comment regards the menu. I would deemphasize panini and add a few pasta and main course options. I believe you had a rabbit dish once. Bring it back. Or add a pigeon, guinea fowl or other substantial offering. Also, thank you for holding out against the insane brunch craze. You provide lunch as it should be."

But on Wednesday night we got a shared table, with 4 loud guys next to us, and the entire second floor was packed. It was difficult to hear the conversation, let alone to get down stairs and get our checked coats afterward. Not a very nice atmosphere I'm sorry to say."

  • "I am a server at IBA&V and believe in Chef Justin Smilie's food. When I am working and the food is delivered, I think to myself, "I want to eat that". So on occasion I do. Saturday I stopped in for a pre theater meal of artichokes, sardines, salumi, garganelle with duck, cacio & peppe, porchetta and carrots. We were out the door in time for the show but I would have enjoyed staying longer and relaxing with my friend because the space is beautiful and comfortable."

  • "Second time at Il Buco A & V and they did not disappoint. My wife and I split everything to maximize the flavors. Had the salume selection, the artichokes, the pasta dish called busiate, the branzino with a side of carrots. The busiate might be one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had (anchovies, tomato and almonds). The brazino was perfectly cooked, moist/sweet with a wonderful drizzle of olive oil. The carrots were the best surprise roasted with coffee and sitting in a bit of creme fraiche. The reasonable bottle of valpolicella ripasso paired perfectly with this delicate tase of Italy. I only wish I didn't have to travel 125 miles to enjoy this rustic piece of heaven."

I was the first to arrive at 7 and she didn't arrive till after 8, with several false calls about not being able to get out in time. However, the hosts and bar staff made sure I was comfortable and with a full glass of wine in my hand. I went from being seated alone to switching back to a table for two without waiting more than 15 minutes and not a single sour face or a roll of the eyes, which would have been warranted in this case. We had a great meal, as always, and the staff made it seam effortlessly with the chaos of a Friday night dinner scene. Thank you!"

We received our first course 1 hour after our seating. The waiter never apologized and seemed like he was doing a service by even approaching the table. Ithe service was so bad that it overshadowed the entire experience."

  • "Had another outstanding meal at Il Buco Alimentari. The Gnocchi and Bucatine were my favorite dishes. The negroni cocktail and the rose wine they had by the glass were stand outs. They have a great wine list but would like to see more affordable wines by the glass. The ones they do offer by the glass are outstanding but it's kind of hard to spend $30 on 2 glasses especially if you want to try different wines."

  • "Despite the restaurant being half empty we were given the worst table crammed in a corner next to a service door. We asked to be moved to any of the several open tables and were told we'd have to sit at the bar. The server was impatient, didn't know the menu very well, was unable to answer many questions and kept asking "so what do you want?" The "market" was an entrance table with a basket of items. Won't be returning."

  • "Will not go back again: receptionist was haughty on a quiet Saturday afternoon, showed us to a table upstairs which was totally empty when the main dining room downstairs was not even one third full? When asked if we could have a table downstairs, simply shrugged his shoulders and walked us downstairs - all this while without a word or smile. More importantly food was nothing to write home about - what they said they aspired to do in their website simply did not show show when the food finally came. When we left the place was still one third full and understandably so."

  • "The two of us had a great experience at IBA&V - probably enhanced because we had a pre-theatre reservation. Service was attentive and thoughtful (bus and runners were noticeably excellent). By the time we left at 7:30pm on a Saturday the place was in full swing and it's no stretch to imagine that attentive service could be a challenge. The room was quirky - the addition of soundproofing wouldn't hurt. The food was quite good; the very simple pasta dish I had was everything it needed to be and no more. Portion size was perfect for adults - just right, not excessive, not ridiculously small. The wines were on the pricey side, to be sure. We'll go back and target another early evening since we're not fond of what likely is a really loud scene."

  • "It's amazing how a server can color your experience at a restaurant. Our server made us feel bad for not ordering enough food (it was plenty!). Also, she made the gelato dessert sound like it was your choice of a few different flavors We chose 2 and were then charged for 2 full orders..$16. If we would have had 3 flavors, then it would have been $12! When we asked her about it, she said "it's closing time"...it was 9pm. I think she was just trying to get the price up, to increase her tip. It didn't work."
