A word from Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria
Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria is a market, salumeria, bakery and restaurant dedicated to quality products.
This "simple convivial spot that tastes just like Italy" feels like a "village inside-a-restaurant". While the Alimentari sells housemade salumi, freshly baked bread and an ample assortment of imported and domestic items, the open kitchen looks out onto a rustic dining room with communal tables and long marble wine bar. A seasonal menu by Chef Justin Smilie features salumi/cheese boards, small sharing plates, fresh pastas and roasted meats and fish from a rotisserie and wood burning oven. The upstairs private dining loft, adjacent to the roof garden and overlooking the main restaurant and market, is available for parties up to 50 people for cocktails and/or a seated dinner. Whole fish under sea salt and roasted short ribs or porchetta are house staples often served family style as are housemade gelato tastings.

This has been my favorite Italian place in NYC. The pastas are outstanding, especially the gnocchi and the cacio e pepe, the salads and vegetables are fresh and well seasoned, and the ambiance is casual, fun, and chic.

We had reservations for 9pm. We arrived a little early and were seated about 10 minutes after our reservation time. Staff is very attentive and professional. Vibrant atmosphere. Food was tasty and prepared well. We ordered crispy artichokes, meat tray, and gnocchi. I'm not a big fan of gnocchi, however this was really flavorful and more like pasta. Dessert was great- had the hazelnut gelato.

Was recommended to go here and have the short rib (sharing for 2) by someone that lived in New York for 20 years. It was one of the best things I have eaten! The place has a deli counter in the front, a small bar and a restaurant area at the back. It certainly isn't a tourist trap. It's felt like we were in a proper trendy New York place that only locals know about. Loved it. Salted roasted beets starter was excellent as was the ricotta. The charred spigarello was very tasty and held up to the awesomely bold flavours of the short rib. The only reason for not giving 5 stars for food was the slightly bland polenta side. It didn't fill me with joy in the way everything else did. I will go next time I'm in New York and so should you.

We've come to Il Buco for wine, for gelato, and finally for dinner. It does not disappoint. The ambiance is warm and inviting, the wine list is great, and the food is terrific. The branzino, pacchere and tartare were all a hit! Service is great as well (they didn't bat an eye when someone ordered a latte after dinner!). I look forward to returning.

I expected noise, but not a constant roar. The food was better than average, but underwhelming. The dishes were pricey, the selection limited, and seeing a fish come out without a thing on the plate was offensive. The staff was not efficient. We asked that they filet the fish but it took a long time to come back. When I made the reservation, I noted that I was bringing a friend who was celebrating his birthday and asked that a candle be put in the dessert of his choice. When I called to confirm, I mentioned it again and was told that they made a note of it. No candle. In short, at this price level, the uncomfortable seating, noise level, limited menu and inability to provide prompt service adds up to NO, I will not go back.

We went on the recommendation of a friend with our two young daughters. The wait staff was exceptional by providing recommendations that would be kid-friendly. They were also very prompt on serving the food, refilling our waters, and clearing the table. We were thoroughly impressed with the food. The crispy artichokes are a must and though I don't ever have gnocchi, il buco's roasted version is now my favorite! We will definitely go back when back in Nyc and would recommend!

Place has great buzz -- often this is associated with lousy food. NOT at Il B Alimentary e Vineria. Everything we had from the AMAZING char-grilled octopus in spicy oil with faro beans and greens to the unbelievable gnocchi with artichokes and slightly oven melted reggiano to the incredible made on site bread and Piemonte wines were truly of top quality. The staff was beyond nice as well as really responsive and efficient. The sommelier actually knew about the Piemontese wines and did not try to "up the ante," rather described the wines I was interested in trying and recommended a great one. Good people watching as well. Paparazzi-level actress on second floor our night!

I am a longtime fan of the original Il Buco, but reservations can be difficult to come by. The food at the Alimentari is comparable with a brighter dining room and more limited menu, but expanded cured meat and cheese selection. My main issue with the Alimentari is the noise level at dinner. Two people eating at the bar area (which I would recommend) is fine and great service from the bartender. Move to a table for four and you can barely hear one another or your server. On this last visit, our server was rather disinterested and borderline surly, but this could be a one off bad experience.

we where sitting upper level at a community table, nice atmosphere but the air condition was much too cold, service was really bad, we had to wait for several things, there was no one really taking care about our party, first wine (red) was sold out after the first bottle we ordered (we have been told after drinking thos), the following red was served to cold for red wine and we had to wait at leadt 15 minutes to get served, overall the serbice does not compete with the kitchen and the prices

After researching several sites and looking at other reviews, I came to the decision to make reservations at Il Buco Alimentari & Vineari. I was not disappointed at all. My experience was great! The ambiance was perfect, old world, but lively. Yes, it is a bit nosiey, but didn't bother me, (we probably were the cause). Food was great. Wish I could try everything on the menu. Had the spare ribs--delicious!! The cured meats, the best I have had in the U.S. Service: The was exceeded my expectations. Best I have had in a long time! Quinn, our server was well versed on the menu and very patient with our group. If you have any hesitations, don't; you will enjoy yourself!

This is my second time to Il Buco Alimentari, and once again the food and service were a KNOCKOUT. This time we were upstairs which I enjoyed less as an ambiance than the downstairs – it felt less energetic and I wasn't expecting the shared tables – so the overall experience wasn't a 5 for me anymore. That being said, I love this place.

Our previous dinner here a couple years ago was a blast, as the communal seating had worked out positively, and our dinner was terrific. This time, our inescapable table mates were loud and obnoxious, and a big part of a pretty disappointing evening. Also, the style of the service and food delivery this visit was, I guess, a trendy attempt at rapid fire, almost chaotic treatment, but it felt slapdash and unprofessional. The bucatini pasta was outstanding, simple but perfectly seasoned; salumi appetizer was good but a little bland; the Italian red wines were disappointing; but the biggest flop was the short rib entree for two--good flavor with the olives, but extremely fatty and hard to eat with the greens. We're not likely to return.

This restaurant was a first time for us. It has much hype and I read that Daniel Bouloud said this would be one of his restaurant visits so that was enough to make me want to try. Loved the atmosphere. Got to know the people next to us very well as you are seated so close. We had an excellent bottle of wine the sommelier recommended, the cheese and salumi platter and then split the order of the spaghetti with cheese and peppercorns ( forgot official name) with as we were full. It was good and we enjoyed it. Our neighbors had the short ribs and they loved, it was a huge dish. I don't know that for the value I will return, great but was not over the top.

Just a great place to dine. The service is excellent. The menu is very good as well. Our waiter noticed that one of our dishes wasn't fully cooked correctly and sent it back before it reached the table. He then complimented us desert even though we'd never seen the mishap. The small touches are much appreciated. There are always throngs of people waiting to dine and il buco utilizes every square inch of possible space - to that extent the restaurant is a victim of its own success.

The place was noisy and cheerful, and the room is attractive with exposed beams & brick walls. We were at a long, narrow table that housed about 15 dining pairs. Elbow to elbow, but OK. There are individual tables too. We were at the very end beside the open kitchen - interesting, but meant we were right by the bussing station and got jostled a fair bit. Reviews raved about the short ribs ($59/2 people), so we ordered them. The flavour was beautiful - garnished with shaved celery, a vinaigrette (I think), walnuts and peccorino. Delicious. Only complaint is that they were a bit fatty. I know ribs can be fatty, but often the fat has been rendered during cooking Service intelligent and gracious but a teeny bit slow. Olive oils great!

The food is very good, very fresh ingredients prepared in an interesting way. The olive oil was so good that we bought it at the front of the restaurant (which is a mini market) after dinner. The decor was casual but nice, with wooden tables that you semi-share with other diners. It was not inexpensive, however, and it was not quiet (in fact, a bit difficult to hear our fellow diners).
