A word from Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria
Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria is a market, salumeria, bakery and restaurant dedicated to quality products.
This "simple convivial spot that tastes just like Italy" feels like a "village inside-a-restaurant". While the Alimentari sells housemade salumi, freshly baked bread and an ample assortment of imported and domestic items, the open kitchen looks out onto a rustic dining room with communal tables and long marble wine bar. A seasonal menu by Chef Justin Smilie features salumi/cheese boards, small sharing plates, fresh pastas and roasted meats and fish from a rotisserie and wood burning oven. The upstairs private dining loft, adjacent to the roof garden and overlooking the main restaurant and market, is available for parties up to 50 people for cocktails and/or a seated dinner. Whole fish under sea salt and roasted short ribs or porchetta are house staples often served family style as are housemade gelato tastings.

Diner Reviews
  • "Always great food and drinks. The restaurant is never not crowded though and waiting for your table can be a bit of a stressor."

  • "we where sitting upper level at a community table, nice atmosphere but the air condition was much too cold, service was really bad, we had to wait for several things, there was no one really taking care about our party, first wine (red) was sold out after the first bottle we ordered (we have been told after drinking thos), the following red was served to cold for red wine and we had to wait at leadt 15 minutes to get served, overall the serbice does not compete with the kitchen and the prices"

  • "After researching several sites and looking at other reviews, I came to the decision to make reservations at Il Buco Alimentari & Vineari. I was not disappointed at all. My experience was great! The ambiance was perfect, old world, but lively. Yes, it is a bit nosiey, but didn't bother me, (we probably were the cause). Food was great. Wish I could try everything on the menu. Had the spare ribs--delicious!! The cured meats, the best I have had in the U.S. Service: The was exceeded my expectations. Best I have had in a long time! Quinn, our server was well versed on the menu and very patient with our group. If you have any hesitations, don't; you will enjoy yourself!"

  • "We tried the wild mushrooms, then the spaghetti followed by the rib roast - delicious! The only downsides were the fact that the upstairs dining room was freezing cold that day, and the table we were seated at a little too high for my size."

  • "The food is superb here, and authentic. Reminiscent of neighborhood restaurants in both Italy and France. Love the casual, authentic ambience too. It can get crowded and noisy at times, though."

  • "This is my second time to Il Buco Alimentari, and once again the food and service were a KNOCKOUT. This time we were upstairs which I enjoyed less as an ambiance than the downstairs – it felt less energetic and I wasn't expecting the shared tables – so the overall experience wasn't a 5 for me anymore. That being said, I love this place."

  • "Great space and food at this sister restaurant of il Buco"

  • "This restaurant is perfect for sharing which I highly recommend so each person can experience more of the delicious dishes. The short ribs, which are the signature dish, melt in your mouth and are rich in flavor. Try the olive oil tasting with the baked on site bread. Superb. Love this restaurant."

  • "Our previous dinner here a couple years ago was a blast, as the communal seating had worked out positively, and our dinner was terrific. This time, our inescapable table mates were loud and obnoxious, and a big part of a pretty disappointing evening. Also, the style of the service and food delivery this visit was, I guess, a trendy attempt at rapid fire, almost chaotic treatment, but it felt slapdash and unprofessional. The bucatini pasta was outstanding, simple but perfectly seasoned; salumi appetizer was good but a little bland; the Italian red wines were disappointing; but the biggest flop was the short rib entree for two--good flavor with the olives, but extremely fatty and hard to eat with the greens. We're not likely to return."

  • "We always go to this restaurant when we visit New York. The bread is the best ever - truly carb heaven. We've sampled the pasta, appetizers, charcuterie and desserts - everything is perfect."

  • "The Best Damned Restaurant in New York. Well, for me. Great atmosphere - it makes you at ease immediately. Terrific service -friendly, knowledgeable, unobtrusive. Amazing, surprising-yet-somehow-familiar food. An admirable wine list. Just great."

  • "Había oído mucho de Il Buco y finalmente me anime a ir con mi familia. El lugar muy bonito y muy buen ambiente pero la comida no nos gusto nada. Yo no lo recomiendo y no regresaría."

  • "LOVE this spot! Been coming since they opened their doors and the food never fails to deliver. Just celebrated my birthday there with friends, a couple of whom had been there before and a few who hadn't. The newcomers were amazed and the "old timers" delightfully reassured. Excellent quality food prepared and presented beautifully. The room is always lively and the front of the house people welcoming. Always a great night out."

  • "This restaurant was a first time for us. It has much hype and I read that Daniel Bouloud said this would be one of his restaurant visits so that was enough to make me want to try. Loved the atmosphere. Got to know the people next to us very well as you are seated so close. We had an excellent bottle of wine the sommelier recommended, the cheese and salumi platter and then split the order of the spaghetti with cheese and peppercorns ( forgot official name) with as we were full. It was good and we enjoyed it. Our neighbors had the short ribs and they loved, it was a huge dish. I don't know that for the value I will return, great but was not over the top."

  • "We really like this place but may not go back due to the noise level!"

  • "This is one of my favorite brunch/lunch spots in the city. Everything on the menu is consistently delicious, service is good and it's not tough to get a rez for brunch on the weekend. Dinner here is also fantastic - get the short ribs!"

  • "This is such a fabulous place! The food, ambiance, service was perfect for a small celebration. AND....all the better because it is in own back yard. Thank you for a wonderful evening!!!"

  • "Just a great place to dine. The service is excellent. The menu is very good as well. Our waiter noticed that one of our dishes wasn't fully cooked correctly and sent it back before it reached the table. He then complimented us desert even though we'd never seen the mishap. The small touches are much appreciated. There are always throngs of people waiting to dine and il buco utilizes every square inch of possible space - to that extent the restaurant is a victim of its own success."

  • "Had a lovely Sat evening meal at Il Buco. Service was spot on, loved the concept, ambience and over all energy of the place. That said the sea urchin was only ok and a small portion. The short ribs were tasty-delicious-large portion but pricey. Nevertheless, it was packed and a lot of people (including ourselves) were having a good time."

  • "Two friends told me I'd love Il Buco. They were right. The atmosphere, the service, the food, the crowd . . . all superb. I care a lot about my dining experience and I can't wait to go back."

  • "This was not the first time I have been here but it was the first time I tried the gnocchi and it will definitely not be the last. It is definitely a noisy spot but the atmopshere was lively. Only downside is a lot of communal tables , even for reservations."

  • "The place was noisy and cheerful, and the room is attractive with exposed beams & brick walls. We were at a long, narrow table that housed about 15 dining pairs. Elbow to elbow, but OK. There are individual tables too. We were at the very end beside the open kitchen - interesting, but meant we were right by the bussing station and got jostled a fair bit. Reviews raved about the short ribs ($59/2 people), so we ordered them. The flavour was beautiful - garnished with shaved celery, a vinaigrette (I think), walnuts and peccorino. Delicious. Only complaint is that they were a bit fatty. I know ribs can be fatty, but often the fat has been rendered during cooking Service intelligent and gracious but a teeny bit slow. Olive oils great!"

  • "The dishes were simple, fresh and perfectly prepared. My friend and I both tried cocktails that were new to the menu and they did not disappoint. Everyone was personable and attentive. The atmosphere was casual and cozy with some communal tables. This could work for a group or for a date. Definitely recommend!"

  • "Food is consistently wonderful and menu changes quite often due to seasonal approach. Porchetta is amazing. Try as many vegetables as possible --they are always delicious and uniquely prepared."

  • "excellent food. fairly simple, very well executed using top ingredients perfect service for the casualness of the room paired with the commitment to food my current favorite everyday restaurant downtown"

  • "The food is very good, very fresh ingredients prepared in an interesting way. The olive oil was so good that we bought it at the front of the restaurant (which is a mini market) after dinner. The decor was casual but nice, with wooden tables that you semi-share with other diners. It was not inexpensive, however, and it was not quiet (in fact, a bit difficult to hear our fellow diners)."

  • "Never disappoints! Always a good meal with great service. Thank you!"

  • "Super food, great hospitality and overall a wonderful vibe. We had the greenmarket prix fixe menu (two courses), then grabbed a gelato to go from the gelateria up front. The salted caramel was to die for. They sell bread and all sorts of condiments from Italy in the retail part up front."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "The only problem with this restaurant is the design and seating. It is loud.... horribly loud. The food and service are just wonderful, just a delight. I would love to eat there again except that it is uncomfortable for the butt and the ears. Maybe if I were 20 years younger I wouldn't mind having to yell to be heard or having to talk into the ear of my dining companions."

  • "We could almost call ourselves "regulars" at this restaurant. It is definitely one of our favorites! The food is consistently very good and the list of ingredients is top quality. My wife is very sensitive to food additives and she never has problems eating here. And, typically, it is also a great place for people-watching..."

  • " We wanted outdoor seating but were told no. The hot weather had moved people indoors, so we were offered a table outside first, (no way); then bar or communal seating inside. What happened to the "table" inside I reserved?. The noise level inside was assaultive, college pub-like. The portions were strange: a tiny condiment bowl filled with five wee artichokes for $14; a chicken entree that was piled high with an inedible tangle of scallions under which was enough chicken for 3 people. At the table next to ours, entrees came on almost empty dinner plates, with miniscule daubs of food, like a parody of "nouvelle cuisine." With such high prices (this restaurant charges $6 for bread), one would expect a better dining experience."

  • "Read a review in the Toronto Globe and Mail about this restaurant and was impressed with their menu...as a non meat eater they accomodated me very well with an amazing tuna and pasta dish to die for...only wish the had the razor oysters on the half shell available!"

  • "We were seated more than 20 minutes after our reservation, then seated at a less-than-stellar-table and then ignored for some time before a snotty waiter screamed "STILL OR SPARKLING?" at us with nary a greeting. After he didn't come back for another ten minutes, we left. What a disappointment after making a reservation a month in advance!"

  • "Came here for dinner with my girlfriend, and it was perfect for a romantic night. Great food, great wine, and not too pricey for the quality!"

  • "Very good Italian restaurant, but not exceptional in any way, bare bones décor, relatively expensive, and very very loud. If you are looking for great salumi, then skip the salumi here which is just middling, although not too expensive. Great salumi is always very expensive. Signature caccio and pepe pasta was way too peppery, this is not da Felice in Rome. Main dishes of chicken and porchetta were interesting and well prepared. Ice cream and sorbetto deserts were also quite good, better than the alternatives. Do not even think about the NY Times 3 star rating, this restaurant is not in that ball park."

  • "Went all the way downtown for breakfast. Extremely slow service, average breakfast, bad coffee. Great bread though. Could have done better in my local Pain Quotidien. Disappointed and wondering what the buzz is about"
