A word from Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria
Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria is a market, salumeria, bakery and restaurant dedicated to quality products.
This "simple convivial spot that tastes just like Italy" feels like a "village inside-a-restaurant". While the Alimentari sells housemade salumi, freshly baked bread and an ample assortment of imported and domestic items, the open kitchen looks out onto a rustic dining room with communal tables and long marble wine bar. A seasonal menu by Chef Justin Smilie features salumi/cheese boards, small sharing plates, fresh pastas and roasted meats and fish from a rotisserie and wood burning oven. The upstairs private dining loft, adjacent to the roof garden and overlooking the main restaurant and market, is available for parties up to 50 people for cocktails and/or a seated dinner. Whole fish under sea salt and roasted short ribs or porchetta are house staples often served family style as are housemade gelato tastings.

This time we were upstairs which I enjoyed less as an ambiance than the downstairs – it felt less energetic and I wasn't expecting the shared tables – so the overall experience wasn't a 5 for me anymore. Just celebrated my birthday there with friends, a couple of whom had been there before and a few who hadn't. The newcomers were amazed and the "old timers" delightfully reassured.   • "This restaurant was a first time for us. It has much hype and I read that Daniel Bouloud said this would be one of his restaurant visits so that was enough to make me want to try. Loved the atmosphere. Got to know the people next to us very well as you are seated so close. We had an excellent bottle of wine the sommelier recommended, the cheese and salumi platter and then split the order of the spaghetti with cheese and peppercorns ( forgot official name) with as we were full. It was good and we enjoyed it. Our neighbors had the short ribs and they loved, it was a huge dish. I don't know that for the value I will return, great but was not over the top."

  • "Just a great place to dine. The service is excellent. The menu is very good as well. Our waiter noticed that one of our dishes wasn't fully cooked correctly and sent it back before it reached the table. He then complimented us desert even though we'd never seen the mishap. The small touches are much appreciated. There are always throngs of people waiting to dine and il buco utilizes every square inch of possible space - to that extent the restaurant is a victim of its own success."

The short ribs were tasty-delicious-large portion but pricey. Nevertheless, it was packed and a lot of people (including ourselves) were having a good time."

  • "The place was noisy and cheerful, and the room is attractive with exposed beams & brick walls. We were at a long, narrow table that housed about 15 dining pairs. Elbow to elbow, but OK. There are individual tables too. We were at the very end beside the open kitchen - interesting, but meant we were right by the bussing station and got jostled a fair bit. Reviews raved about the short ribs ($59/2 people), so we ordered them. The flavour was beautiful - garnished with shaved celery, a vinaigrette (I think), walnuts and peccorino. Delicious. Only complaint is that they were a bit fatty. I know ribs can be fatty, but often the fat has been rendered during cooking Service intelligent and gracious but a teeny bit slow. Olive oils great!"

The decor was casual but nice, with wooden tables that you semi-share with other diners. It was not inexpensive, however, and it was not quiet (in fact, a bit difficult to hear our fellow diners)."

  • " We wanted outdoor seating but were told no. The hot weather had moved people indoors, so we were offered a table outside first, (no way); then bar or communal seating inside. What happened to the "table" inside I reserved?. The noise level inside was assaultive, college pub-like. The portions were strange: a tiny condiment bowl filled with five wee artichokes for $14; a chicken entree that was piled high with an inedible tangle of scallions under which was enough chicken for 3 people. At the table next to ours, entrees came on almost empty dinner plates, with miniscule daubs of food, like a parody of "nouvelle cuisine." With such high prices (this restaurant charges $6 for bread), one would expect a better dining experience."

If you are looking for great salumi, then skip the salumi here which is just middling, although not too expensive. Great salumi is always very expensive. Signature caccio and pepe pasta was way too peppery, this is not da Felice in Rome. Main dishes of chicken and porchetta were interesting and well prepared. Ice cream and sorbetto deserts were also quite good, better than the alternatives. Do not even think about the NY Times 3 star rating, this restaurant is not in that ball park."

  • "Il Buco's decor goes out of it's way to appear casual and rustic but there is a great deal of attention to details behind the scenes. We sampled a selection of house cured salumi, grilled octopus, gnocchi, rabbit, and the crispy polenta. Every dish was terrific. The octopus had a lovely smokey flavor. The gnocchi was light and paired with asparagus, and the rabbit was crispy and tender. And the polenta went with everything! The wait staff was friendly and unobtrusive. We will definitely visit Il Buco the next time we're in New York."

I had a delicious branzino that they were kind enough to fillet for me.The food was very good but the menu is small. I eagerly anticipated my return to the city in order to experience the food for myself. I made the reservation 6 weeks in advance and invited family to join me (party of 7). But my gourmet bubble was burst! The food was majorly disappointing. I ordered the classic Roman dish, Caccio e Peppe. It chould have been called undercooked Spaghetti with Pepper. The gnocchi was a strange concoction with kale pesto. The portions were preciously small. The service was instrusive; the server was not knowledgeable. Seated on the non-descript second floor didn't help. Overall, this was a terrible dining experience."

  • "This place made me deliriously happy. My husband and I were only in NYC for approx. 24 hours and had sought a lunch recommendation from a foodie friend. Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria was perfect: gorgeous (and comfortable) rustic interior, welcoming staff, luscious fare. Had to restrain ourselves from ordering most of the menu! Enjoyed the porchetta panini (so much more than what that name typically implies), gnocchi with kale pesto and asparagus, grilled sausage on the side, and a heavenly basket of bread/olive oil. Our waitress was a bit cold--unusual for the place as a whole--but she was efficient and let us linger. No room for dessert but did leave with a killer apricot crostata from the adjoining 'market' for a later snack."

  • "I went for lunch with a friend and her son who I hadn't seen in years (and live far from NYC), and I couldn't have picked a more perfect spot. The menu was exciting and the ingredients super fresh. While I'm not a fan of communal seating, I didn't mind it very much here but that could be because it was lunchtime and not very crowded. Small issue with one of the desserts we ordered but not enough of reason to not go back. Eating at this place again is at the top of my list. As for my guests, they were very impressed and will make sure to go back the next time they're in NYC. With or without me."

  • "As part of the new chi-chi precious farm-to-table movement you get much smaller portions at fairly inflated prices. $15 for 3 razor clams or $21 for a quail is high. Small pasta portions at $20+ also. Lastly, yet another whole-roasted branzino - not very creative. Gelati were excellent."
