Diner Reviews
  • "Here's a real find in Davidson, North Carolina. The owner is always on premises to greet you, and that's usually a good sign in any restaurant. The food is always well prepared, from the old-fashioned Italian "comfort" dishes, up to the more complicated preparations. As good as the food is, it's the comfortable feeling here that makes the dining experience so outstanding. Most everything is prepared on premises, and the owner's son does the baking, from bread to croissants. We've never been here for breakfast, but there's a very Euro feel to the small coffee bar that make it seem worth the trip some early morning. Have dinner here, stroll the beautiful town of Davidson, and go home well restored."

  • "I always enjoy my dining experience at Il Bosco. Food is great and the atmosphere lends itself to being able to have a quiet evening with conversation that is not drowned out by loud noise. One of my special "go to" places when I want to show off Davidson cuisine. "

  • "Il Bosco is a hidden neighborhood gem. While on the more expensive side, the food and service did not disappoint. It's a great spot for a getaway meal with that special someone or for an intimate dining experience. I will definitely go back!"

  • "Good, not great food but very enjoyable dining experience"

  • "Excellent Italian cuisine, with a few novel twists. One of the best restaurants in Davidson, and one of the few where you can really carry on a conversation. Attentive service and good choice of wines by the glass. Even my college-aged vegetarian daughter enjoyed her meal!"

  • "We were visiting our son at Davidson and made a last minute reservation at this delightful downtown restaurant. The veal dishes are spectacular and it's a lovely dining experience overall. What a gem."

  • "It's no wonder Il Bosco reminded me of great Italian restaurants in NYC. Soon after the warm greeting at the bar I could tell the owner was a fellow paisan from Brooklyn. We learned he brought his talents for authentic Italian dishes to small town North Carolina over twenty years ago. What a treat. Perfectly al dente pasta, veal milanesei, stuffed mushrooms, gnocchi, and bisteca with fresh herbs and Gorgonzola mashed potatoes, all Delicioso!! Add warm and attentive service. Best Italian for miles!! Bravo Jimmy and staff."

  • "Everything was great, except for our waitress. She managed to hover, but never cracked a smile. She did not tell us of the specials (which sounded great, when overheard from a neighboring table.) She made us feel like a burden. The other servers and staff seemed friendly and positive. The food was quite good and I liked that it had a quiet, cozy atmosphere."

  • "We had a good and bad experience. One of our diners is a vegetarian. We found out that all of their salad dressings contain raw eggs. All of their sauces contains wine - in addition to the avoidance of meat - our diner also could not tolerate the wine flavoring. The restaurant did not offer anything other than what was on the menu - she ended up w/ the roasted veggie appetizer (a cold dish). I had the gnocchi and while the food was excellent and cooked perfectly - the "grande" sized version for $19 wasn't very big. All in all - a good and bad experience."

  • "This was our first visit to il Bosco. From start to finish, we enjoyed everything. When my husband realized he had forgotten his reading glasses and couldn't see the menu, reading glasses magically appeared at the table. The service was perfect - always right there, friendly, but not intrusive. The food was excellent and everything was perfectly timed. The veal was cooked exactly right, the special salad of arugula, goat cheese was delicious. We'll be back!"

  • "The service was professional but friendly, attentive without being intrusive. What a pleasant surprise to be in a college town and not be referred to as "You guys" a single time! How nice that the owner introduced himself and spent time chatting - we felt that our presence was truly appreciated. The food was excellent - love those white beans in olive oil for the bread, and the house salad is not to be missed. Simple and just a prefect starter with that white balsamic and lemon vinaigrette. The only "complaint" would be that while the entrees were quite good, it was slim pickings for a non-meat eater who prefers a lighter touch. The menu is heavily meat-centered, and the pastas had a lot of cream and heavier sauces."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Greeted immediately by who appeared to be the manager/owner. Very quaint dining area. Tried the specials and they were excellent. Indulged in the chocolate ganashe dessert as well. Would definitely go back as many menu items looked attractive . I noticed many delicious salads being served."

  • "Nice homemade pasta, tasty Veal Marsala and fresh cannolis. We would like to enjoy the outdoor grotto in warmer times. There was an issue with our salads but it was correctly promptly."

  • "Il Bosco certainly lived up to it's reputation. It was quiet and cozy and service was excellent! The calamari was the best I've ever eaten and the salads and homemade pastas were unique and delicious! will definitely go back!"

  • "We REALLY enjoyed this place. It was our first time and we'll be back. We shared the fried calamari which was the perfect sized appetizer serving for two. It was hands down the best we've ever had. Not at all greasy or chewy. My husband had the sea bass which was perfectly sautéed with a light crust and served with black olives and capers. I had fettuccine in a tomato cream sauce with mushrooms. I ate every bite which is pretty unusual for me. A nice feature of the menu is that all the pasta portions are offered in a small size as well as a larger one. The owner/proprietor is a presence in the dining room and he answered our questions about the wine list and menu. He was very pleasant and not at all overbearing."

  • "We've eaten here several times and been very happy. Unfortunately something has changed. The food was not remarkable. After we paid our check they were clearly done with us. We sat at our table for almost an hour after paying the check and no server ever approached our table. No more coffee. No more water. Nothing. I would have bought another round of drinks if anyone ever offered. The restaurant was 75% empty and the staff was standing around the bar area. It was 10pm so I doubt we were keeping them up. I will not be returning any time soon."

  • "I have dined at Il Bosco many times and have never been disappointed with the food. The specials are always great and Jimmy does a great job with wine selection. It has a great following of return customers which is a tribute to the consistency and quality. If your attire for quality dining consists of shorts, tee shirt and sandals you probably need to go somewhere else, as there is a dress code."

  • "My husband and I love to experience tasteful food and wine but become often disappointed in what you find when dining out. Simply stated, average to below average wine and food, poor service and quite frankly over priced and a lack of ambiance. Well fellow locals and those visiting, this restaurant is time and money well spent and will NOT disappoint. I can't tell you when I enjoyed food more ... We did not miss a course and was impressed in the wine collection! Do order that second bottle and delight in the flour-less chocolate cake. What you don't finish can be taken home and as for the homemade gnocchi's.... It certainly doesn't get any better!"

  • "We were welcomed at the door and the welcome continued throughout the meal with attentive, yet unintrusive, service. We received guidance as to wine selection, and the pairing was perfect. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. We have eaten here before and recommend that you make a reservation so that you won't miss out on a fine dining experience."

  • "Wonderful evening in every aspect. The menu was complete and the specials made choices challenging, but rewading. Love the ambience. Very special environment with wonderful tastes. Serivce staff added a nice touch. One of our favorite places to dine and feel like we are getting away."

  • "This was our second time at Il Bosco and it was not as good as the first. No complaints about the food or wine- the menu is great and the quality of both the food and wine are very high. The service this time was very slow. it took over an hour from the time we got there for our entrees to come out, and we didn't order anything complicated or take our time ordering. We did notice the owner of the restaurant, who was there for our first visit and took very good care of us, was not there this time. Not sure if ownership has changed or what, but something was different. We do plan to return and give them another try..."

  • "We have been a fan of Jimmy's for years and his newest restaurant venture is characteristic of him and his style--original, creative, authentic cuisine done with a flair with special touches added---the service is as good as the food and is warm, friendly, inviting, and fulsome---we can't go often but when we are in the area, it is a must go---you will not be disappointed."

  • "We are from out of town and dine at Il Bosco whenever we are in Davidson (once or twice a year). The food is fresh, balanced, inventive and perfectly prepared. The service is professional and the setting is warm and intimate. We are well traveled and are particular about food quality and good service in general. Il Bosco is one of those "finds" for us. Their seafood and veal are especially good. The wine list is approachable. The owner comes around, welcomes guests, and he remembers us and says hello when we dine there."

  • "My wife and had a terrific date night experience at Il Bosco. The food was delicious and the quality exceeded my expectations. The filet I ordered was expertly prepared and just a terrific cut of beef. The atmosphere was elegant and romantic without being pretentious. Our server was a charming gentleman, and his attention to detail and presence helped cap off a wonderful, kid-free evening for two busy professionals. It was my first but not last visit to the restaurant."
