Diner Reviews
  • "This is an old fashioned Italian restaurant. Nothing wrong with it, just nothing really special about it either. Water glass was a bit murky. Sent it back and got a clear one. Not expensive. Food was adequate."

  • "We had 6:30 reservations prior to an evening at the ballet (8:00) curtain. We were seated promptly and our orders were taken promptly too. Finished dinner in plenty of time. I had the lasagnette - the dish was smothered in a cream sauce which is not very Italian."

  • "We were able to get reservations before a symphony date We ordered bruschetta as an appetizer, and it was loaded with fresh red ripe tomatoes, and fresh basil. My wife ordered spaghetti carbonara. It was served plain with bits of pancetta. My wife liked it, but noted it was slightly dry. I ordered the veal piccata, and it was great. The sauce was wonderful, but the meat was slightly tough and slightly dry. We shared homemade pistachio gelato. It was wonderful with a creamy texture. The service was friendly and attentive, without being too much! This is a very small place, with a capacity of maybe 15 or 20 patrons. It is easy to find, and is a 10 minute walk from Davies Symphony Hall. We will return."

  • "We were put off by the loud music, which sounded like it was Latin which did not match the fun Italian decor & food. I go to restaurants to enjoy the food & be with my friends and not listen to loud music - that is what a bar or disco is for. I got the impression that the music was for the kitchen staff. My dining companion asked the waitress to lower the volume, which she did. The food? I though it was odd that my friend's pasta had the same sauce as my ravioli. His pasta was presented as if it had been dropped into boiling water and not stirred, and the paste was in coiled tightly on the plate. If one does not have great expectations they will probably be happy to eat at Il Borgo."

  • "Nice neighborhood spot...food was good with Lasagneta being exceptionally good. Service is spotty...they're delightful and friendly but a bit overwhelmed...certainly recommend this place with reasonable expectations on service."

  • "I came here with my husband about 12 years ago... pregnant. We had a fabulous meal and have not forgotten it. Our honeymoon was in Italy, so I have an appreciation of good Italian food. I had not been back as I do not live in the area, but came back recently with my girlfriends. We had a wonderful dinner. I had the Veal Saltimbocca. Girlfriends had the vegetarian lasagne, lobster ravioli and something else... Most of their pasta is hand made there. The service was exceptional. I wish I lived closer."

  • "Excellent and large portion of gnocchi in creamy rich pesto sauce. Others had rich and well prepared pasta dishes. Salads very good and fresh. Will return at a later dining time, as 6 pm on Saturday seemed to stretch the staff--service was quite good, but a little rushed."

  • "The food was mediocre at best and the service was subpar. We started with caprese and never even got bread. Our silverware arrived after our food. For entrees, we had the bolognese with "fresh" pasta (not sure if it was fresh even though the menu said it was) and the penne funghi (only one type of mushroom by the way). Neither were anything to write home about."

  • "We love Italian food and eat a lot of it. Maybe Il Borgo's cook was having a bad day, but our two pastas were pretty uninspiring. The tomato sauce was bland, the chicken pieces, while generous in quantity, were undercooked. Some grated Parmesan cheese might have helped but didn't seem to be available. The service was friendly but very slow; the one server was energetic but seemed badly over worked. On the positive side, prices for food and wine were OK, the bread was good, and the place has a comfortable neighborhood feel."

  • "The evening started fine. We explained to the waitress that we needed to leave the restaurant to make a show by a certain time. Food came in plenty of time. Once we got the bill, it took too long for her to pick it up. We were past the time we needed to leave. When she did pick it up, she said "We don't take American Express." and walked away instead of waiting for me to give her another card. We then got up and took the bill and new card to her. She said, "Don't you have cash? This will take awhile." I was stunned and felt as though I was being held up over credit card fees. A bad ending to what could have been a nice dinner experience. I could not recommend this restaurant. I hate to say that, but I just couldn't after this experience."

  • "We enjoyed a casual dinner here before the symphony. It's a friendly welcoming place, and the food is hearty and good. The service was a little slow, due to understaffing (there was a Help Wanted sign in the window and one person was waiting all the tables) so allow enough time if you have a deadline."

  • "At the corner of Laguna and Fell Streets, this restaurant serves good food at reasonable prices. Perfect for attendees at S.F. Symphony or the Opera. Good service, but the heat always seems turned up to high."

  • "I felt as if I was back in Italy where my family used to live. Their Tiramisu was exactly the same wonderful dessert I remember from my visits in Italy; It was a wonderful experience chatting in Italian with the owner and enjoying a great dinner before the ballet . We will certainly go back."

  • "It was a fantastic experience. The food was exceptionally delicious and we are still raving about it 3 days later. The service was spot on...friendly and helpful with perfect timing. The atmosphere was charming, cozy and energetic. We left with happy hearts and bellies."

  • "As holders of season tickets to the symphony, four of us are always in search of a new restaurant to enjoy prior to the performance. This one was a hit! Great food, good service, only downside was the noise level when it filled up. We'll definitely eat here again."

  • "Our waitress was friendly during dinner service, but when it came to paying our bill, she was shockingly rude. We gave her two credit cards to have the bill split, but she returned to say that they didn't accept Amex. Our friends gave her their Visa card which she accepted, but then she came back and literally threw the check holder on the table and said that their machine "wasn't working". What would they have done if we didn't have the cash? Were they just trying to avoid the service charge that they have to pay the bank? Was it too much trouble to split the bill? We wonder if the owners realize how much competition that have in this neighborhood. We'll not only never return, we'll tell everyone about the horrible service we received."

  • "We ate very well, including the deservedly famous lasagnete, which is a little on the cheesy side, but has real depth of vegetable flavor. The decor is a little worn, but it is cozy, and feels like a family restaurant (which I think it actually is). The wine list could be better but the food prices are fair, especially in the vicinity of the symphony. We will go back."

  • "This corner restaurant reminds me of how San Francisco was 20 years ago before the "I'm a celebrity Chef" craze hit the city. This place is small flu and intimate and underrated. The owner chef greets you at the door and is also the waiter, busser and maybe the chef too. The bread is homemade and delicious. The food is authentic italian. I did not have the pizza but it looks AMAZEBALLS. I love this place! Don't tell anyone.."

  • "Second time this has happened to me - made a reservation and it doesn't matter. It's first come first serve. First time was a call in phone reservation, the second time was via opentable. To be fair, they were both for Valentine's Day which makes sense bc that's the day they would be crowded. In both cases, I checked in, they wrote my name down and I waited until they made it down the list."

  • "For the second time in 2 months, we took friends to our neighborhood Italian restaurant on a rainy evening. We warned them that it was nothing fancy, but it was good. They disagreed. It isn't fancy, but it's much better than good. Let's call it simple and unpretentious. Each of us enjoyed every aspect of the meal. I think our friends will be coming to our neighborhood from now on when they're in the mood for good Italian food!"

  • "This Hayes Valley Italian restaurant has red checkered plastic tablecloths, wooden seats (cushions provided) and a cramped space, but a waitress who was very personable and attentive, with a delightful Italian accent. There was only one other table occupied so the restaurant was very quiet. While easy to find on the corner of busy Laguna and Fell, there is no parking unless you have lucky parking karma and can snag a spot on the street (of concern only to those who still drive cars in SF). The pricing is moderate, with $12 to $18 pasta dishes and also a group of $20-$30 dishes, but the food was very good."

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant. Our server was very nice and she made us feel quite welcome. The food was good, but nothing to get excited about. Bread was served, and there was a little saucer for olive oil placed on our table, but no olive oil was ever served. I started with Insalata del Borgo...it was good but next time I'll ask for dressing on the side...there was a bit too much on mine.. For the main, I ordered Chef Special #9 ...Fusilli: Mozzarella and eggplant in fresh tomato sauce. Again, good...but not super-outstanding. With that I enjoyed a very nice glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. One of my dining companions ordered pistachio gelato for dessert...I had a taste and it was quite delicious."

  • "My husband and I dined here before the symphony. It is not right on Hayes Street so I think it gets less foot traffic so many people don't know it is here (we didn't), but we found this to be a wonderful experience! I am Italian and was raised eating handmade pastas and my mother's delicious cooking, so I know Italian food! At Il Borgo, I had the most delicious homemade gnocci! My husband enjoyed penne with an excellent sausage and mushroom sauce. We loved our arugula salad and the tiramisu was the best we've ever had! I am looking forward to trying more things on their menu next time we are in the Hayes Valley area. I have been to both Cafe Delle Stelle and Stelline and neither of those restaurants can compare with Il Borgo. It's the best!"

  • "Always looking for something new before a symphony concert, so I booked this when they were announced on OT based on the menu which had decent variety to suit our group of 4. It's a small spot with about a dozen tables with plastic tablecloths and candles. I should have been concerned when I had to ask for the table to be wiped; later we had to ask for clean forks, too. Food was okay; nothing stood out. Very limited wine list and only a few by the glass (not listed - had to ask). One request to use a different sauce on a plate got mixed up with another plate. Bread was good. We're writing this one off the list - won't be back."

  • "This was a neighborhood Italian gem. This is a family run restaurant with a excellent Italian food. The pasta carbonara was prepared like the restaurants in Rome. One have to try it!"

  • "I picked this restaurant because it was close to the SF Opera, and I could get a reservation when most other Hayes Valley restaurants were booked up. When I arrived, all the tables had candles lit, but no one else was there--but it was early and after we were seated a few others started to arrive. The service was excellent, friendly and quick, and the food was very good. We shared bruschetta and a caprese salad as starters, then had the lasangnetta that other reviewers said was great - and it was delicious. I liked this place alot, it is a little off the main street in Hayes Valley, but quiet and close enough to the Symphony/Opera."

  • "Terrific food for both the adults and kids in our group! Service was impacted by a full restaurant and only two wait staff. The ambiance and excellent food made up for the slow service, however, and we will definitely return."

  • "It's too crowded. After looking at reviews, we were very disappointed when we got there. The reservation was not ready so we stood outside waiting for a table to open. When we got our order, the pasta was only adequate and they brought a bottle of the wrong wine, several dollars more expensive for which they were not willing to adjust the price (they pull the cork at the work station, I had no chance to approve it before hand). They also had two items on the bill that had been ordered, but were never delivered. Those they did remove after some discussion. It's a cute joint, but the staff is clearly overwhelmed."

  • "We arrived about 15 minutes late for our reservation because of bad weather and traffic. We attempted to call the restaurant while en route and got only an answering machine. When we got to the restaurant the door was locked (I'm sure the fire marshal would have something to say about that) and when the proprietor opened it for us he at first refused to seat us, saying that if you're late for your reservation the table is given away. There was an empty table and he did seat us. We then realized that there was a large group taking up most of the restaurant that was clearly overwhelming the ability of the staff to cope. However, once seated we were treated graciously and the food arrived quickly. The food was good, not great."

  • "Il Borgo is a cute little restaurant on a corner in the 'hood, and has anything you might want: salads, pasta, pizza, Italian specialties. There is nothing pretentious about it, just good food, a casual atmosphere and happy times... Stay away, I like my neighborhood's special place just the way it is."
