A word from Ideale
"For an authentic Roman holiday without the airfare, this undiscovered North Beach gem is worth seeking out."
(Zagat)A bright, colorful Italian restaurant, Ideale is the modern version of a traditional Roman trattoria. It is "festive and boisterous...la vera cucina italiana."Ideale has been bringing a slice of Rome to North Beach for over 20 years with it's highly acclaimed chef, Maurizio Bruschi. Maurizio hails from four generations of Roman chefs, lovingly taught by his grandma, la Nonna Serafina. The pastas and breads are all homemade and the ingredients are hand-picked daily. The 2011 Zagat guide gave Ideale a 24 for food and wrote that the "Italian fare is the real deal...one of the few no tourist eateries in North Beach..excellent pasta and pizza..the service makes you feel like a friend..a delightful experience." Ideale has won numerous awards, including being listed in Zagat's "Best Italian Restaurants in America" and The Chronicle's "Best Pasta in North Beach."Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "With so many good restaurants in the neighborhood it was fun to find a new charming place to go when in the area. We came up to see Beach Blanket Babylon and wanted to grab dinner before the show. We got to Ideale early and had a great experience with wonderful, attentive service and everyone was friendly and from Italy! We had so much fun that we came back after the show for dessert! Yum! Also had a glass of Moscato D'asti to make the night end perfectly! We will be back!"

  • "We have been dining at Ideale for three years and it is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants in San Francisco. Located in North Beach, Ideale is a cozy, casual Italian restaurant with a tiny bar in the back. On our most recent visit, we were greeted warmly by Guiseppe, our server. We started with perfectly prepared grilled calamari and a pear with prosciutto and a sprinkling of arugula. For entrees, we had the organic spinach and cheese ravioli, the special pasta with fish, pasta pomodoro and pasta carbonara. The pastas were fresh and delicious. The sauces were perfect - the right blends of ingredients. My daughter had the tiramisu and loved it. Great food, friendly service, reasonably priced! We'll be back!"

  • "We had the Calamari, two pasta dishes and a pizza. All outstanding. Sauces and flavors were excellent. Tiramisu was the best. Out of the way place is worth the visit. Rustic setting but very good cost per value."

  • "We went there with my family and the food was delicious! It is a little loud there, but the service is excellent!"

  • "Came here with my parents and a good family friend a couple nights ago and overall loved the food. We ordered two appetizers, one being the cold seafood salad which did not seem fresh - was very "fishy". Besides that, our entrees were amazing. We cautiously ordered the fish of the day, two pasta dishes, and the rack of lamb - all amazing. The pasta is homeade and you can really tell. The fish was cooked perfectly and was fresh (thankfully). This was my second time here and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good italian restaurant in North Beach. I personally find this restaurant much better then the tourist traps on Columbus."

  • "Great authentic Italian food in a very easy going casual environment. I enjoyed Zucchine Tartufate - terrific light dish and my Costolleto di Vittello were as good as the one I enjoyed in Italy. Reasonable priced wine list and a very attentive service."

  • "This place has great decor, friendly service, and a really nice atmosphere. There were three of us. We had the gnocchi, which were better than average with a very good meat sauce; ravioli, which we liked; and a mushroom/sausage pizza, which had a nice thin crust and a pretty nondescript taste - it definitely could have been better. The Caesar salad was good because it actually had anchovies, a rarity these days. We had a reservation and were seated right away. I would recommend this place as a good match between quality and price, with an excellent atmosphere."

  • "Took our kids for an early dinner. Waiter was very patient and came out with some good ideas on standard menu items that the kids loved. Will definitely return. If only we could park someplace close, sniff."

  • "Really good Italian cuisine accompanied with a solid Italian wine selection. Deserts were exceptional. Especially enjoyed the Tiramisu and the lemon gelato with lemoncelllo which was just amazing. I thought I was in Florence."

  • "This was a business meal with 6 of us all out of town The service was excellent, the pasta appeared to be homemade And they even had really good limoncello. It was like Being he in the north end in Boston"

  • "We were the first ones in on Tuesday night at 7 and were a little worried. A very Italian staff met us at the door and made sure we felt welcome and taken care of. They were a little quirky but super nice and helpful with everything, and we felt comfortable even with a 6 and 7 year old in tow. Tortellini and Ravioli were homemade and AWESOME. Cream and Red sauces could not have been better. Prosciutto and Pear appetizer was delicous. Drinks were great (appropriately strong with good tonic) and wine list had plenty of great options at good prices. Will definitely go back."

  • "We have been to Ideale many times, but never on Saturday night. There is no parking, of course, but the service was rushed, our orders mixed up, and the food was not inspiring. They were out of the Arneis wine and the bill came to $115 with tip. The burrata was good."

  • "We started with the special appetizer for the day: smoked mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto and baked, served atop arugula. It was such an interesting take on cheese starter...all of the flavors, smokey and salty and earthy and peppery. Wow. We then ordered our entrees (with a little help from our waiter). My friend ordered the homemade lasagna per our servers eager suggestion, and I ordered the paparadelle with lamb ragu. We, literally, ate every last bite. The pasta in both of our dishes was homemade and handcut. The texture and the flavor was so delicate and light...I had forgotten what real pasta tasted like. The sauce was perfection. The right blend of tomato and spice and small chunks of meat. We were literally in heaven."

  • "This is where I go when I want to be reminded of the great food I enjoyed in Rome. I come here often and it's very authentic. If you stick with the zucchini salad, a pizza and gnocchi with tomato sauce, you can't go wrong. The gnocchi are pillows of heaven. I highly receommend this restaurant."

  • "Great food, great wine, great hosts! We come here every single time we stay in San Francisco. Their wine list is remarkable with a lot of good Italian wines."

  • "The waiter took our order and brought our drinks and appetizers. Then we waited. After 45 minutes, we tried to get his attention. Other patrons got served, ate and left. After 55 minutes, we stood up and waived. The waiter came and said, "Your food is coming soon." We told him we weren't hungry any more, and asked for the check. He argued. "The kitchen is very busy. Your food is coming, " We insisted on the check. Another waiter told us that our order had gotten lost. It's not a big restaurant, and someone should have noticed we weren't being served. We paid more than $50 for a glass of wine, a very nice plate of cold antipasto, and a gin and tonic. No one ever said "sorry" or "thank you." ."

  • "Have eaten here several times mostly because it reminds us of Italy. If you go on a busy weekend, drawbacks are it is so popular that you don't really feel comfortable lingering over your courses and it's pretty loud. For a total experience, "Ideally", a couple would split an appetizer (uno per due), split a pasta, and perhaps each get an entree (entrees are not giant). But you can also just get a nice thin crust pizza, if you want. I will never stop going there as long as they have the zucchini with truffle oil (salad). Dessert menu could use some freshening up."

  • "Delicious food, good menu and specials that were clearly changed daily. Service a bit "curates egg"."

  • "Homemade pasta, nicely sauced. Very reasonable price point. Some other diners seem to think the place is too Italian. How can that be?"

  • "Amazing food, amazing place. This is the first place I come to when I visit SF. The pumpkin ravioli was to die for!"

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants. Went there with a party of six on New Year's Eve. They did nothing special, just had their regular good food in a fun atmosphere. I gave the food only a 3 because some of the pasta dishes came out a bit heavy - usually this is a 4 or 5-star food experience. And I liked that they staggered their reservations so that the place didn't get impossibly overcrowded. The service was first-rate and friendly, as it always has been in my experience. I'd recommend Ideale to anyone who loves hearty Italian food and a perfectly cooked piece of fish."

  • "Great food, I mean great! Everyone in our party of 4 was pleased with their dishes. Good service and friendly staff. Would definitely return!"

  • "A local friend recommended this as a place my visiting Italian family would enjoy for a holiday dinner. Ideale was the only restaurant that they truly felt was as good as "back home in Rome." The wine was as good as the food. Desserts were excellent and large enough to share. Staff were not warm, but the service was good and the food arrived promptly and as ordered. The owners need to arrange tables better so their staff doesn't keep bumping into seated patrons as they serve. But that may not be an issue on a normal evening."

  • "We live close to North Beach and like the convenience of going to dinner in the neighborhood. Ideale is not located on Columbus ave. so it does not get lots of tourist traffic. The place is a little gem. Not an impressive looking place but the food is good and provides great value. Service is good as well with most of the servers speaking Italian."

  • "I love this restaurant, but a the holidays, they have large parties. Although they do their best, it impacts the food and service. Dinner was not quite up to the 5 star rating I usually give them. I will definitely come back, but at a quieter time!"

  • "We keep going back to Ideal for the amazing Roman inspired Italian food. The waiters and bar lady are charming and always attentive. It's one of the few Italian restaurants that is still staffed and ran by Italians. Highlights from the menu: zucchini with truffle oil, fennel salad, the grilled calamari with arugula, the veal chop and the pappardelle with lamb ragu. Reservations are highly recommended the place fills ups fast once it opens."

  • "The staff is professional and friendly. Do try the calamari appetizer. The wine list is well priced and quite good.. We were a party of four and all of our appetizers, soups and entrees were superb. Sadly, we were sated and had no room for what looked like a wonderful choice of dessert. Bravo!"

  • "I knew the two traditional Roman dishes I wanted - spaghetti alla carbonara and the saltimbocca. Nothing fancy about the spaghetti alla carbonara it's just straightforward delicious. Of course the pasta is cooked to al dente. At Ideale they make a fantastic spaghetti alla carbonara. The saltimbocca was extremely satisfying. The veal was moist and the prosciutto complimented the veal. The roasted potatoes are a great side to this dish. Why not a 5-star review? After seeing Anthony Bourdain eating a traditional Roman pasta cacio e pepe I just wish this restaurant would have this dish. I'm not an expert on Roman cuisine but for the secondi section there should be more traditional Roman dishes for this restaurant to really stand out."

  • "We have plenty of choices in SF to eat, we choose Ideale at least once during every visit! When guest from out of town come, we recommend and more often than not make the short road trip to join them. The food is fresh, authentic and consistent. Salads are fresh and wonderful - I love the fresh fennel salad. A must try!"

  • "I may never be able to eat any other pizza ever again. Ideale elevates the humble pizza to its own course in a four course menu. The Caesar salad was likely the best I've ever eaten, with the freshest ingredients, a sprinkling of capers and just the right, light dressing. Our waiter helped out with terrific menu suggestions. Do not leave without eating at least one pasta dish. Located off the tourist streets of North Beach, this is truly a neighborhood find where you will find yourself well cared for and well fed."
