Diner Reviews
  • "The sushi is stellar, as is the experience of sitting at the sushi bar. I'd recommend the chef's special, where he gives you whatever is freshest and also describes each piece in detail. I loved the fact there wasn't any soy sauce because each piece is lovingly dressed (or blow torched!). This was hands-down my best sushi experience. Knocks the socks off of Nobu, and I love Nobu...just sayin. DO IT. Oh, and another thing I adored was Biggie Smalls and Dr. Dre playing in background. BOOOM!"

  • "Ichi is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the city. The sushi is remarkably fresh and delicious and the oysters are the best I've ever had. The vibe is cool and relaxed, but there's a certain, infectious energy that hums through the space. (Does that even make sense? Who cares. It's true!) They've also got an eye toward sustainable fish sources (no bluefin here) and you've got to respect that. And I've always got to be careful not to eat a pile of their yuzu chicken wings before the sushi comes. So good..."

  • "We were a party of 4, and enjoyed the food. Nice flavors (miso clams were wonderful), beautiful plating. However, although we ordered quite a bit of food, all 4 of us left the restaurant still a bit hungry."

  • "i'm weary of any sushi restaurant that has a cool kid vibe to it. i don't need old school rap pumping in the background (though i'm not by any means opposed to it), mostly because i think it covers up for a lack of training and quality when it comes to the sushi. while the omakase was refreshingly inexpensive, the fish and cuts just weren't that great. the spicing/accoutrements were smart and interesting, but it couldn't make up for the fish. they went with obscure fish rather than just the best tasting stuff out there. overall, really liked the vibe and people, but feel like it covered up an average omakase experience."

  • "good solid sushi. but nothing was transcendent. which it should be for the prices they're charging."

  • "Fish was ehh, super small portions, freaking loud as all get out and terrible service."

  • "We ordered the omakase and we were not disappointed. To start we were served 'Goma Greens' (brocollini rabe, with sesame dressing), then we had some nigiri - Tuna tatami, Kinmedai, Kampachi, Aji, Shiro Toro, Ocean Trout Dashi (this was really good), Miso Clams (clams, ground pork, kuro oil), Kasu cod (this was excellent), Ama Ebi and Uni to end our meal. For our drinks we had sake- Black Dragon, Yamahai Junmai."

  • "We had eaten sushi at the old space once before, so I knew the sushi would be amazing. What I didn't know is that the other food would be equally amazing—the beef tataki, the cold somen noodles. And the design of the new space is so lovely--vibrant and inviting. This place is now my favorite restaurant in SF."

  • "Tim and his team have rocked the move. The nigiri is just as fresh and delicately seasoned as ever and the hot specials like the pork belly just as amazing and moreish. The new space is airy and comfortable and I love, love, love the mural. We remain happy regulars!"

  • "ICHI has had some of the best, highest quality sushi in the city since it opened. Now, with the new ICHI + NI Bar, there is more room for diners and the quality is still amazing. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered Omakase and it was truly amazing. Several times I had to close my eyes to simply enjoy the amazing flavors and textures that were presented. True professionals and warm human beings."

  • "Food was amazing..we did omakase at the bar and were very impressed. Our chef was creative, friendly, and knowledgeable. The restaurant was quite loud when we arrived so it was actually nice to eat on the later side when it started emptying out."

  • "There's been so much hype around this place, so I thought it would be phenomenal. Sadly, it was just okay. :("

  • "I can't say enough about how much I love this place. I dream of it. I conspire of how I can get to SF just to eat here. I wish that more sushi places had the innovative and high standards as Ichi does."

  • "they push the nigiri but my husband and i found the rolls to be tastier. the miso soup was really good. they left off my seaweed salad which we didn't realize until later."

  • "Wonderful, fresh sushi, attentive staff. Worth a special trip."

  • "The food was good. The menu very simple. The restaurant has tables and chairs. Without joking, this is a very nice sushi place if you live in the neighborhood. It is tiny without much of a decor and the menu contains what is expected of a sushi restaurant. But don't expect surprises, originality or new tastes for your buds. Very good thing: it is fairly affordable!"

  • "Table not ready at reserved time. Asked whether we could sit at bar instead and were told, very emphatically, "absolutely not." We were told we would have to wait outside for about 15 minutes, so we chose to leave. Food is probably very good, but service is way below minimum standards."
