The steak melted away on your tongue, the baked potatoes was fabulous and I have never had a better cauliflower gratin. We really enjoyed our romantic dinner."

  • "My friend and I always have our birthdays and Christmas celebration at Hy's. My only comment on the food was a bit salty (Caesar salad) and the halibut is dry and also bit salty (next time will ask them not to make it salty). The staff give very good service & friendly."

  • "Love Hy's for it's old-school ambiance, so I was very relieved that the recent renovations did not take away from that. The food and the service were both great, as always; attentive but not intrusive. The table-side preparations are my fave, and again Hy's didn't disappoint! The table-side steak Diane (not on the menu as far as I could see, found out it was available on my previous visit) was incredible. And of course the cheese bread is worth the visit alone. Great martinis as well. Looking forward to doing it again!"

  • "My wife and I go to Hy's a few times a year for special occasions and have never had a bad experience. The food and service is exceptional. So glad there are no blaring TV's in the place! Love the atmosphere there. We also use the gift certificates we purchased at Costco. Highly recommend you buy these when available as you save twenty dollars on the purchase of a hundred dollars in gift cards. Great deal!"

  • "My partner's 14oz NY was thinly cut and (visually) underweight; it came slightly over-cook than medium-rare as ordered, steak was drenched and overpowered by excessive Hy's sauce. she struggled and managed to consumed half of her meal. My 16oz Rib Steak was cooked the way I ordered (rare) but fair amount of fat had to be trimmed off in pile, it was a bit of unsightly works. It was a one off, that won't deter us from visit them again."

  • "My sister visiting from overseas loves this restaurant and when she is in town we always come with the whole family. She now has a 3 year old and we were worried it might not be appropriate to bring a child (though well behaved and use to fine dining establishments) especially given it is a power lunch location. The server was so attentive and efficient. Food was fabulous as always."

  • "Very professional and high end. No fooling around at this place. Nothing buy quality and atmosphere. I highly recommend this place for special events or important deal closing dinners. I really like the traditional steakhouse look to the place.Really like the fact that some of the salads and desserts are made right in front of you. Fantastic rustic tunnel you walk into the main dining area. The grill is exposed to the main dining room which adds a great anticipation for your meal. The price i felt had real value. The service was excellent and their job was taken real seriously which complimented the whole feel of the venue."

  • "Great service. Catered to the woman and her needs of satisfactory. Took note of anniversary and accommodated as such. Always asked if we needed anything and let us take our time, no rush. Wasn't pushy on the big prices items. Positive attitude from staff. A bit crowded and loud but it is a hot spot. I will be back soon, bit pricey but worth it. And tip your waiters well, I sure did. They deserve it."

  • "We were ignored by barkeep for drinks - despite the very gracious hostess telling him we were ready for a drink. We had to ask again while he served subsequent guests around us. Our water glasses were kept full. The friendly waitress did not make up for the unimpressive overcooked (huge chunks) of cauliflower, baked potatoes and mac and cheese and ny steak. My filet mignon was the only morsel worthy. Every other item was like a fast food dish. One drink came with a hair and took 15 minutes to replace (and it was not re-made - ice was melted and watered down). Cheese bread was served 10-15min before the Caesar salad which we were recommended to have with the Caesar, and then Caesar was not made at the table like everyone around us."

  • "Server was good, but forgot things and was a bit slow to come back to the table. Desert took so long we almost cancelled our order. Steaks were over done and a bit too salty, but they were very tender. Crab cakes were delicious - best part of the whole meal. The restaurant was very loud and I felt the seating was cramped. Overall a nice place, but was a bit surprised they even charge for water, although it's really not that expensive when compared to other similar restaurants."

  • "Been at this restaurant a few times generally good. Asked for my steak medium well. came medium, the green beans were under cooked. I found the service mediocre [had to wait approx 3 minutes for someone to greet us l, then we had to sit in the bar until our table was ready. Our waiter cracked jokes. Like" don"t tell anyone but would you like some complimentary Pepper or Hi Kids {we are in our sixties}" I just found it kind of corny for a high class restaurant . I thought the prices were quite high, same dinner at the Keg would have been 1/2 the price. My wife received a comp piece of cheesecake it was her birthday.Would I go back, probably not. they should update the decor, it feels like an gentlemen's club when you walk in. "

  • "as always the perfect evening especially for a special event.this is my kids, in their 20s, favorite place bar none. from the wedge salad with chunky blue cheese dressing and bacon bits, the ceaser salad made at your table( a rarity, maybe the only restaurant in Vancouver) to the beef tartare and then the main. my daughter and I split the porterhouse(more than enough for 2)1 son eats it all himself. we order it chicago style. my other son likes the cajun new york. a couple of glasses of reasonably priced wine (as it should be)for me . a beer for 1 son, and on to a dessert. Oh wait, don't forget the cheesy bread. to die for. GO NOW!"

  • "Consistently great atmosphere, food a service. Front staff, servers are always warm and friendly. Never snooty which you might expect at a high end place. Cheesy bread is literally to die for. Everyone gasps when they try it for the first time and thereafter. Caesar or Wedge salad gets you to the main. Who makes a caesar at your table anymore? A real touch and you can really taste the difference. Plus you can change it to your taste. More anchovies and parmesan plse. My g.f. and i split the 22 oz. porterhouse. Plenty for 2. Twice baked potato is the only way to go . Add some brussel sprouts and califlower. You won't be disappointed. Finish with some cheesecake. One of the best in the city. Gotham, Black and Blue? Fogetaboutit!"

  • "The waiter was top rate. Totally non-assuming. Gave the exact right amount of information at the exact right time. Perfect. The cheese toast was kind of mystical. The steaks were full of gristle, so I sent mine ($45 peppercorn) back. My girlfriend's ($65 steak and lobster) was slightly better, so she gave me 1/2 of hers. But we probably send 3/4 of it all back. The manager gave me mine for free. The desserts were amazing (pecan pie, and cheesecake) probably the best of either we have ever eaten. Ever. But somehow, the baked potato was the best of the meal. It was heavenly. Bottom line: would we go back? No. Would we recommend it? Maybe Was it clean? Sorta. Mostly it was just old. Was it worth it? Not at all. Was the service good? Yup! "

  • "The food here is just more than good from the starter to the dessert. However the location is hard to find and the entrance is hidden in the city. Also I found the table sittings are quite close to each other and some people really talk out loud during the dinner. Overall, definitely right choice if you are picky on your food. "

  • "My wife and I went to Hy's for her birthday. Our dinning session was overall pleasant and the services were good. For our dinner, we shared the porterhouse, some salad, and appetizers. I have no complain for the beef, it was done to perfection, but it is the fries that came with it. Sadly, I have to say even BurgerKing or McDonald has better fries than Hy's. Fries were over cooked, crispy. Apparently they are those frozen fries, really nothing special. Hope they could improve it."

  • "We were a party of 7. Three of us ordered prime rib and it failed to live up to all of our expectations. It appears as though the meat was cooked/warmed up on the grill rather than cut to order from a baked large piece. All pieces had almost as much fat as meat. The Caesar salads were great and of course your baked cheese bread is the best in the city. However the prime rib disappointed close to half the table. "

It's a step back in time kind of feel (a good thing - hard to find such a place nowadays). It's my husband's first pick of steak house in the city. Food was fabulous, service was friendly and the ambiance was perfectly set. I highly recommend a place to be for all special occasions."
