  • "I booked this place for lunch because I like steaks. It’s just a quick lunch for 3 of us. 2 apps, 2 steaks and a lunch special. All that is about $135.00 I am OK with this except the waitress added on extra charge for the steak sauce. This is the first time I got charged for the sauce every in any steakhouse. I asked her. She was rude and said "are you ok with the charge?" that she did not tell me. I am not happy and she did not do anything. So we pay the bill and left."

  • "My husband and I treat ourselves to dinner at a high-end steakhouse several times a year. This time, we travelled from Victoria to have dinner at Hy's Encore. Although we initially intended to dine at Gotham's, we liked that Hy's cooks their steaks over a charcoal grill, so changed our plans and reserved at Hy's. We were terribly disappointed in the quality of the steaks. The rib steak was very thin, and so overcooked (well done, instead of medium rare) that we sent it back. The steak that returned was not a rib steak (looked and tasted like sirloin) and was no improvement. Our server was professional and apologetic, but the overall experience was very poor and we definitely would not return."

  • "We had date night at Hy's, as we often do, and as usual it was everything we expected and more. The atmosphere was just perfect and we managed to get the corner table we had never sat in (which is now our favourite spot). Dan our waiter was just outstanding, he looked after everything and help make our evening memorable and the cheesebread, ceasar salad and rib-eye were all to die for. Thanks Hy's for a wonderful evening!"

  • "I was really disappointed with the atmosphere and the food. We started with the "famous cheesy bread" which was something I could have made better at home, it is just bread done in the oven with a slab of cheese melted on it. My bf ordered the steak and it was smaller than expected. I ordered the lamb and although it was good it was nothing over the top and I think I have had it better at home. There was nothing stand out for me about this restaurant for me and we personally felt ignored by our server probably because we were a young couple so he didn't think we would leave a good tip. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. Anyways if you want a good steak dinner I would try somewhere else that is not so over priced for the same quality."

  • "This place is charming in its own way. Very retro with the table side prep of the Caesar salad and all. The decor is midway between a gentleman's club and a mausoleum. Very pleasant and attentive service, but on the night I was there with my son, the steak was simply not up to par. When I asked about the steak, my server said it was aged for 28 days, and she could not tell if it was dry aged or not. I suspected it was not. My 60 dollar porterhouse (shared with my 10 year old son) was not bad on the filet side, but kind of tough and grisly on the sirloin half. Even my son commented "wow, this is really chewy!" Our server sensed our displeasure and brought a cheesecake slice later. Fun night, but won't be back. Skip the cheese toast..."

  • "My family and I have always thought this restaurant was our "special spot" because it is supposedly rated #1 steak in Vancouver and we've enjoyed it the two previous times we've been there. Though pretty quiet and a good interior, the food and especially the service was off. The caesar salad is usually good but John (our server who made the salad in front of us) but way too much anchovy sauce in it. The food also took over an hour so most of the food was warm at best being mostly cold. When John our server asked us how our food was and we told him our issues, he replied with "Sorry it's not perfect". John really made this what was supposed to be a fantastic experience to an overpriced undesired dining experience."

The steak melted away on your tongue, the baked potatoes was fabulous and I have never had a better cauliflower gratin. We really enjoyed our romantic dinner."

  • "Love Hy's for it's old-school ambiance, so I was very relieved that the recent renovations did not take away from that. The food and the service were both great, as always; attentive but not intrusive. The table-side preparations are my fave, and again Hy's didn't disappoint! The table-side steak Diane (not on the menu as far as I could see, found out it was available on my previous visit) was incredible. And of course the cheese bread is worth the visit alone. Great martinis as well. Looking forward to doing it again!"

  • "My wife and I go to Hy's a few times a year for special occasions and have never had a bad experience. The food and service is exceptional. So glad there are no blaring TV's in the place! Love the atmosphere there. We also use the gift certificates we purchased at Costco. Highly recommend you buy these when available as you save twenty dollars on the purchase of a hundred dollars in gift cards. Great deal!"

  • "My partner's 14oz NY was thinly cut and (visually) underweight; it came slightly over-cook than medium-rare as ordered, steak was drenched and overpowered by excessive Hy's sauce. she struggled and managed to consumed half of her meal. My 16oz Rib Steak was cooked the way I ordered (rare) but fair amount of fat had to be trimmed off in pile, it was a bit of unsightly works. It was a one off, that won't deter us from visit them again."

She now has a 3 year old and we were worried it might not be appropriate to bring a child (though well behaved and use to fine dining establishments) especially given it is a power lunch location. The server was so attentive and efficient. Food was fabulous as always."

I really like the traditional steakhouse look to the place.Really like the fact that some of the salads and desserts are made right in front of you. Fantastic rustic tunnel you walk into the main dining area. The grill is exposed to the main dining room which adds a great anticipation for your meal. The price i felt had real value. The service was excellent and their job was taken real seriously which complimented the whole feel of the venue."

  • "Great service. Catered to the woman and her needs of satisfactory. Took note of anniversary and accommodated as such. Always asked if we needed anything and let us take our time, no rush. Wasn't pushy on the big prices items. Positive attitude from staff. A bit crowded and loud but it is a hot spot. I will be back soon, bit pricey but worth it. And tip your waiters well, I sure did. They deserve it."

  • "We were ignored by barkeep for drinks - despite the very gracious hostess telling him we were ready for a drink. We had to ask again while he served subsequent guests around us. Our water glasses were kept full. The friendly waitress did not make up for the unimpressive overcooked (huge chunks) of cauliflower, baked potatoes and mac and cheese and ny steak. My filet mignon was the only morsel worthy. Every other item was like a fast food dish. One drink came with a hair and took 15 minutes to replace (and it was not re-made - ice was melted and watered down). Cheese bread was served 10-15min before the Caesar salad which we were recommended to have with the Caesar, and then Caesar was not made at the table like everyone around us."

  • "Server was good, but forgot things and was a bit slow to come back to the table. Desert took so long we almost cancelled our order. Steaks were over done and a bit too salty, but they were very tender. Crab cakes were delicious - best part of the whole meal. The restaurant was very loud and I felt the seating was cramped. Overall a nice place, but was a bit surprised they even charge for water, although it's really not that expensive when compared to other similar restaurants."

  • "Been at this restaurant a few times generally good. Asked for my steak medium well. came medium, the green beans were under cooked. I found the service mediocre [had to wait approx 3 minutes for someone to greet us l, then we had to sit in the bar until our table was ready. Our waiter cracked jokes. Like" don"t tell anyone but would you like some complimentary Pepper or Hi Kids {we are in our sixties}" I just found it kind of corny for a high class restaurant . I thought the prices were quite high, same dinner at the Keg would have been 1/2 the price. My wife received a comp piece of cheesecake it was her birthday.Would I go back, probably not. they should update the decor, it feels like an gentlemen's club when you walk in. "

  • "as always the perfect evening especially for a special event.this is my kids, in their 20s, favorite place bar none. from the wedge salad with chunky blue cheese dressing and bacon bits, the ceaser salad made at your table( a rarity, maybe the only restaurant in Vancouver) to the beef tartare and then the main. my daughter and I split the porterhouse(more than enough for 2)1 son eats it all himself. we order it chicago style. my other son likes the cajun new york. a couple of glasses of reasonably priced wine (as it should be)for me . a beer for 1 son, and on to a dessert. Oh wait, don't forget the cheesy bread. to die for. GO NOW!"
