  • "This is my second time there - first time was our wedding anniversary last year and yesterday was for my husband's birthday. It's a step back in time kind of feel (a good thing - hard to find such a place nowadays). It's my husband's first pick of steak house in the city. Food was fabulous, service was friendly and the ambiance was perfectly set. I highly recommend a place to be for all special occasions."

  • "The disappointment was in the steak - the only (get it) reason we were there - I had the 10 oz NY only and if it was 7 oz I would be amazed - thinner than expected and not particularly satisfying - My companion had the 16 oz bone in rib eye - also too small and too thin - this is not consistent with our Hy's expectation - The veg (asparagus and mushrooms) were great and plentiful -"

  • "The signature New York and Rib Eye steaks were thin and not seared, just cooked brown on the outside, indicating a grill that was not hot enough. I can do a better job at home. The cheese bread tasted like it was made from cheap cheddar and Wonder bread. There was no hint of a spice rub on the steaks. We had a reservation and arrived on time, but were initially ushered to the worst table in the joint, outside the kitchen door with a very bright flourescent light shining through the window. The waiters were competent and cordial, but it is too bad the kitchen prepares such boring, uninspired food. At this price point they should do a much better job."

  • "I love this restaurant. The food is consistently very good... until my last visit. I ordered the bone-in rib steak, medium rare. I it appeared as a giant (covering 2/3rds of the plate) thin (1/2" max) slab of meat. It was very sinewy. The worst part was that the cook had clearly forgotten about my steak while he was cooking it, and left it on one side for almost the entire cooking time. It was charred black on one side and cooked all the way through to rare on the extreme other side, then flipped at the very last minute to get some grill marks on the rare side. I should have sent it back, but I kept hoping it would get better... it just kept getting worse. Next time I will know better and ask about the steak before ordering. Disappointing"

  • "We don't go often, but we love a good steak and Hy's never disappoints us. Our server Tim made sure we were comfortable and well taken care of and Christopher (the manager) was excellent. He hand made our Caesar salad table side and gave me a tour of the upstairs area before it opened for a party (all wood panels, carvings and paintings). I never knew they used to make motorcycles in that building! As usual, the food was simply delicious. We shared a 22 oz porterhouse cut English style along with the twice baked potato. Dessert was apple crumble and cheesecake. We both loved watching the chef grill all the meats through the glass window and while the restaurant did get noisy, it was a treat for us. We highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We loved the food at Hy's. The steaks were amazing and we were glad we didn't pass on the cheesy bread. I had mentioned it was my boyfriends birthday and when I called to confirm my reservation they acknowledged the note however there was nothing special offered and our server didn't even acknowledge it. I selected 'special occasion' purely because of the price. $200 (excluding tip) for two people is pricy. We recently dined at Joe Fortes and that was a 5 star meal - food, service, all round experience for the same price. Our server was professional which is always a plus but very robotic. You could tell she did not want to be engaged in any kind of conversation, infact she looked rather terrified when we tried to chat with her at all."

  • "The title says it all. The Ceasar salad was done table side quite good, maybe a little anchovy. The cheese bread is the real reason I go there. The steak was ok, a tenderloin should never be tough. My baby back ribs were quite good. The table was good and I will go back just not have steak."

  • "Last fall, we visited Hy's & everything about the experience was phenominal. We spent New Years Eve with you at Gothams & again, it was fantastic. Recently we went back to Hy's. The cheese bread & the escargot were mouth watering. Unfortunately it ends there. My wife had ribs & I had the 10 oz. striploin. My wife found the ribs to be bland. I gave her a bite of my steak. It had your special sauce on it. She felt that the sauce on the steak should have been on the ribs. It was very tastey. My steak was a little on the tough side. I had to cut atleast a 1/4 of it off as it was fat & grissol."

  • "I recently hosted a group of clients at Hy's Encore for one of the individual's birthday dinner. Our server, Brent, was always available but never hovering. Everyone enjoyed their meals very much. If you love a flame grilled steak, you will find many options on the menu. As noted above, it's not for the faint of wallet - steaks are in the $40 CAD range, sides are extra. Minor complaint, the Caesar Salad (prepared tableside) were good but a bit too heavy on the garlic. All the meat orders were cooked to order. A couple of people had desserts and they were excellent."

Our waiter was great. My only criticism is that Hy's is somewhat dated, too dark and has a dreary ambiance. A little modernization would help."

  • "The evening started out very well as we were shown to our table very quickly and in a quiet corner as I had requested. The appetizzers of Oysters were very tasty. Unfortunately from that point on, our experience went downhill. My wife's large atlantic lobster was so salty it was impossible to eat, yet the smaller lobster I got was quite nice. I felt obliged to wait while the restaurant worked to correct the lobster for my wife. They tried their best, but the second one out was not much better, but by then it was getting quite late and my meal had cooled off. In the end, the restaurant did compliment the lobster meal, but when I paid, the waiter made no attempt to give me any change or ask if I wanted any change, he just quickly left."

  • "I thoroughly enjoy this restaurant. The steaks are the best, cooked exactly how you want them. I like the way the vegetables are served separately. You then don't feel that your plate is too full! There were 4 of us going all out with everything so it wasn't cheap, but if you are wanting a really special night out then this is the place for you. Another good thing is the noise level. We could hear each other speak so didn't feel we had to shout at all, but it's not so quiet that you feel you should whisper! Nice to sit in armchairs at the front of the restaurant for a wee drink before dinner! The staff who look after cars and direct you in are particularly nice. What a welcome."

The cheese toast is the best food of the evening. Don't understand why the Caesar salad is not prepared in the dining, even though it was mentioned on the menu. For the steak, my son's NY Strip has a thick layer of fat, and the sauce is too thick on the top of the steak. For the chateaubriand, the meat is of good quality, but is too cooked as we ordered medium. Overall, enjoyed the ambiance for the special occasion!"
